Chapter 48: What is the Hyūga Planning? Danzo's Constricting Presence
Tenzo Hyūga was in a very bad spot.
He had walked straight into the worst-case scenario. If his son, Hizashi, was a novice at political framing, then the man sitting across from him was a grandmaster.
In Konoha, the thing the Great Clans feared most wasn't an enemy invasion; it was walking through a quiet forest and having Danzo Shimura appear behind them to "discuss the village's needs."
"The Hyūga have maintained private communications with the Hidden Mist for thirty years..."
Danzo spoke without a trace of emotion. "What exactly have you been discussing with the Kaguya all this time? Why does a clan of bloodthirsty berserkers believe the Hyūga have the power to dictate the Hokage's foreign policy?"
"Did the village authorize these meetings? What is the Hyūga's true motive?"
"Is this letter an attempt to mock the Hokage? Are you planning a coup?"
"Who is behind you, Tenzo? Who gave the order?"
Danzo spat out the questions like a rapid-fire barrage of kunai. Tenzo's face turned a sickly shade of grey.
Damn it, Tenzo thought, the 'Darkness of the Shinobi' really is as ruthless as the legends say.
He was the Head of a Great Clan, and he wasn't about to roll over for these baseless accusations, but Danzo didn't give him room to breathe. The Assistant's voice grew louder, filling the room with a suffocating pressure.
"The Hyūga's motive is clear: Double-Dealing. You're betting on both sides of the fence!"
"You claim to be reporting this letter in good faith, but in reality, you're leveling a vicious insult! You're trying to compare the Hokage to the Mizukage! You're trying to frame our new Patrol Net as nothing more than Hiruzen's version of the 'Bloody Mist'!"
"This is a direct attack on the Will of Fire. You are digging at the very roots of Konoha..."
Danzo turned to Hiruzen, his eyes blazing with "righteous" fury.
"Lord Hokage, I believe the Hyūga are acting as puppets for the Third Mizukage. This is a false-flag operation! They are using the village's prestige to hoard political capital, trying to signal to the world that the Hyūga are the real power here—the Shadow Hokage!"
Beside them, Hizashi was stunned.
Wow, he thought. I knew Danzo was intense, but this is a whole new level of character assassination. And the scary part? He almost makes it sound plausible.
Tenzo felt his hands and feet turn cold. The coherent, interlocking logic of Danzo's accusations was crushing him. Even as he felt the urge to roar in protest, a part of him was in awe of Danzo's skill.
Tenzo had used similar tactics to suppress dissent within the Branch House for years, but compared to the sheer scale of Danzo's "High-Level Framing," Tenzo felt like an amateur.
"Speechless? Caught in your own web?"
Danzo's voice turned into a sub-zero hiss. "You call yourselves a Great Clan, but who has the Hyūga produced?"
"Did you produce a Madara Uchiha who could challenge the First Hokage? Did you produce an Izuna Uchiha who could trade blows with Lord Tobirama?"
"Even the Uchiha wouldn't dare pull a stunt like this! How dare the Hyūga be so bold!" Danzo slammed his hand on the desk, the veins on his forehead bulging with enough pressure to rival a Byakugan activation.
That particular jab hit Tenzo where it hurt most.
The Byakugan and the Sharingan were always called the "Two Great Eye-Traits," but everyone knew the truth. The Uchiha had produced gods; the Hyūga had produced... efficient scouts. They were riding the coattails of the Uchiha's legend.
Danzo's subtext was clear: The village tolerates you because you're useful. Don't mistake our patience for weakness.
"Lord Assistant, the Hyūga have no such intentions!" Tenzo gasped, desperate for an exit. "Look at Hizashi! He is performing excellently in the Anbu! Why would we jeopardize that?"
"Hizashi is a fine young man and a dedicated soldier," Danzo barked, refusing to let go. "But what does he have to do with the Hyūga clan?"
Tenzo blinked, his brain momentarily short-circuiting. What do you mean? He's my son! He has the Byakugan! How the hell is he not related to the Hyūga?!
"Hizashi was recruited by the Hokage," Danzo continued. "You only brought this letter today because you realized the 'Branch House' was moving out of your control. You're trying to buy back favor to stop the bleed. You're trying to sabotage Hizashi's relationship with the village. I see right through you."
Danzo watched Tenzo's spiraling panic with a sense of pure, dark satisfaction.
Lately, he had been spending all his time learning "Leadership" and "Management" from Hiruzen. While he found it useful, his old habits—the interrogation, the fear-mongering, the political framing—had been suppressed for too long.
Unleashing it on the Hyūga Head felt like a long-overdue scratch for a deep itch.
Tenzo felt as if a giant python were slowly coiling around his throat. Is this it? Is the clan finished?
Just as the pressure became unbearable, Hiruzen exhaled a long cloud of smoke and gave a soft, rhythmic cough.
Release.
Danzo stopped mid-sentence. He didn't argue. He didn't even huff. He simply closed his mouth and sat back.
The sudden compliance was so abrupt it even surprised Hiruzen. Since when did Danzo become this well-trained?
"Sit down, Tenzo. Let's speak like civilized men," Hiruzen said, his voice instantly lowering the temperature in the room.
"Danzo, you're being a bit extreme."
"The Hyūga have bled for this village. Even if they've made mistakes, they remain a pillar of Konoha. We must remember that. We don't turn our brothers into enemies over a misunderstanding."
Tenzo felt a mountain of weight lift off his shoulders. He slumped into his chair, his robes drenched in a cold sweat.
Thank the Sage... Hiruzen is still the reasonable one.
Then, a cynical thought crossed his mind: Typical. The Good Cop / Bad Cop routine. Danzo breaks me, and Hiruzen saves me.
"Tenzo, you probably think Danzo and I are just playing parts, don't you?" Hiruzen asked, a small smile playing on his lips.
Tenzo gave a weak, embarrassed shake of his head. Can the Hokage read minds now too?
Hiruzen reached into his desk and pulled out a document, sliding it across the table. It was the official roster for the Konoha High Commission.
Tenzo's heart hammered against his ribs.
The list had clearly been drafted days ago. As he scanned the names, he froze.
He didn't just see Hizashi's name on the list. He saw his own. And his name—Tenzo Hyūga—was ranked above his son's.
The "Commission" was no secret. Every Jonin in the village was currently obsessed with who would make the cut. Tenzo had assumed Hiruzen would appoint Hizashi to create a rift—to set up the son as a rival to the father.
If Hiruzen had appointed Hizashi but left Tenzo out, the Branch House would have flocked to Hizashi like a rising tide. It would have been a "Bloody Mist" style purge of the clan's internal hierarchy without ever drawing a sword.
It was a master-level "Heart-Killing" strategy. Tenzo had been terrified of it.
But Hiruzen hadn't done that. He had given them both a seat.
"Tenzo, in Konoha, we live by the Will of Fire."
"The village and the clans are not enemies. We are partners. We win together, or we lose together," Hiruzen said softly.
"This is what separates us from the Mist. I don't see my shinobi as tools or assets to be used up. I see them as friends. As brothers. As family."
In that moment, Tenzo Hyūga felt a strange, unfamiliar sensation in his chest.
The Will of Fire... he thought. Is it possible it's not just a slogan? Is it actually real?
For the first time in his life, the Clan Head didn't look at the Hokage as a rival to be managed. He looked at him as a leader he wanted to follow.
