Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Day Everything Broke

Kang Min-jun stood in the waiting hall of the Awakening Center, his palms damp with sweat.

The place was noisy. Too noisy.

People laughed nervously, whispered prayers, or stared at the floor like criminals waiting for judgment. Floating holographic screens flashed names and classes one after another, each announcement followed by cheers or sighs.

"Next… Kang Min-jun."

His heart skipped.

"That's you," a gentle voice said beside him.

Min-jun turned. Han Seo-yeon smiled, her eyes bright, her expression full of confidence. She looked calm, like she already knew the result.

"You'll do fine," she said. "I can feel it. You're not ordinary."

Min-jun smiled back, though his lips felt stiff.

"Yeah… I hope so."

Inside, his thoughts were a mess.

I have to awaken something good.

Mom is counting on me.

Ji-ho too.

And Seo-yeon…

"Kang Min-jun, please step onto the platform."

He took a deep breath and walked forward. The circular platform lit up, white light rising around his feet and swallowing his vision.

For a moment, there was nothing.

Then a cold, mechanical voice echoed inside his head.

[System Initializing…]

[Awakening in progress…]

Min-jun's eyes widened.

System? So it's real…

The light faded.

The giant screen flickered.

Then words appeared.

[Awakened Class: Necromancer]

[Class Tier: Common]

Silence followed.

Then whispers.

"Necromancer?"

"That's a useless class."

"Common tier too…"

"Doesn't that class die first in dungeons?"

Min-jun's chest tightened.

Common…?

He turned his head slowly.

Seo-yeon was staring at the screen. Her smile was gone. Her eyes looked distant, calculating.

"Seo-yeon?" Min-jun called.

She exhaled quietly.

"…Necromancer," she murmured. "That's disappointing."

The word hit harder than he expected.

"I can still grow," Min-jun said quickly. "Levels matter too, right? I'll work hard—"

She shook her head.

"Min-jun, don't lie to yourself."

Her tone was calm. Too calm.

"That class is weak. Everyone knows it. Needs corpses, no defense, no burst damage. A joke compared to real combat classes."

She looked at him, truly looked at him, as if seeing him for the first time.

"I don't want to waste my future."

"…What?" Min-jun whispered.

"I'm breaking up with you," she said. "I thought you'd awaken something better."

Before he could respond, another announcement echoed.

[Awakened Class: Flame Berserker]

[Class Tier: Epic]

The hall exploded with cheers.

A tall young man stepped down, flames flickering faintly around his fists.

Seo-yeon's expression changed instantly.

"That was amazing, Park Hyun-woo," she said brightly.

Hyun-woo grinned. "Thanks."

She walked to his side and took his arm naturally, as if she had always belonged there.

Min-jun stood frozen.

So this is how it ends…

He left the center without looking back.

Outside, cold air hit his face. His legs gave out, and he sat on the steps, staring at the ground.

Common necromancer…

A soft chime sounded again.

Before he could think—

[New Companion Acquired]

[Basic Skeleton – Level 1]

A presence formed behind him.

He turned slowly.

A thin skeleton stood there, holding a cracked sword. It looked… awkward. Hesitant. Almost shy.

"…You're real," Min-jun whispered.

The skeleton tilted its skull and raised a bony hand in a clumsy salute.

Clack.

Min-jun laughed. Weak, broken, but real.

"Guess… it's just you and me now."

Far away, his mother prepared dinner.

His younger brother Kang Ji-ho waited for him.

And deep inside the system, something unseen began to move.
