Chapter 22 - Chapter Twenty-Two: The Third Throne

Chapter Twenty-Two: The Third Throne

The Hunger had taken form.

The Empire had witnessed it.

The Court had survived it.

Neither side celebrated.

Fear traveled faster than truth.

Within three days, rumors had crossed every border.

"The Vampire King has released an ancient god."

"The Empire now serves the darkness."

"The Princess has betrayed both kingdoms."

None of them were true.

None of them needed to be.

Rumors had always been the first weapon of frightened people.

Far beyond the territories claimed by either the Empire or the Obsidian Court lay a forgotten mountain range known as the Crown of Ash.

No kingdom ruled there.

No banners flew above its cliffs.

The people who lived among those peaks had abandoned both sun and shadow centuries ago.

History called them extinct.

History was wrong.

Deep beneath the mountains, hundreds of figures gathered inside a vast stone sanctuary carved into the heart of the earth.

At the center stood a throne unlike any in the known world.

It was made of neither gold nor obsidian.

It was carved from pale crystal that seemed to drink both light and darkness.

A woman dressed in silver robes approached it and knelt.

"The reports are confirmed," she said quietly.

The figure seated upon the throne opened his eyes.

They were neither human nor vampire.

One burned white.

The other burned black.

"So..."

His voice carried through the chamber like distant thunder.

"They have awakened it."

Around him, the gathered assembly lowered their heads.

They were called the Keepers of the First Dawn.

Long before the Empire had worshipped the sun...

Long before vampires had built the Obsidian Court...

The Keepers had guarded the oldest law in existence.

Never allow Light...

Night...

or Hunger...

to become one.

Their leader rose slowly.

He was known only as The Warden.

His face bore no scars.

No wrinkles.

Yet his eyes carried the exhaustion of countless centuries.

"The prophecy has begun," he said.

One of the elders stepped forward.

"Should we prepare the Purge?"

The Warden was silent for a long moment.

Finally—

"No."

The chamber stirred in surprise.

"They are still choosing."

Another elder frowned.

"The Hunger walks."

"It walks inside containment."

"The Princess strengthens it."

"She stabilizes it."

The debate echoed through the sanctuary.

Some demanded immediate action.

Others urged patience.

The Warden raised one hand.

Instant silence followed.

"You misunderstand the danger."

He walked toward an enormous mural carved into the chamber wall.

It depicted three towering figures.

One made of living sunlight.

One cloaked in eternal night.

Between them stood a third figure surrounded by countless broken stars.

"The ancients feared war."

His hand rested upon the third figure.

"But war was never the true catastrophe."

He turned.

"They feared unity."

At the Night Spire, Elowen stood alone in the royal library.

Ancient books covered every wall.

Most had never been opened in generations.

She searched through forgotten records looking for any mention of dynamic containment.

There was almost nothing.

Until she found a journal hidden inside a hollow shelf.

Its leather cover had no title.

Only a single symbol.

Three interwoven circles.

Her heartbeat quickened.

She opened the first page.

"If you are reading this..."

"The Hunger has learned to speak."

Elowen froze.

The handwriting was impossibly old.

The journal continued.

"Do not believe it is your first conversation."

"Others tried before you."

"Others believed balance could tame evolution."

She turned the page.

Several had been torn away.

The remaining entries became increasingly frantic.

"The Third Throne must never rise."

"If Sun and Night truly unite..."

"The prison becomes a kingdom."

The final sentence had been written in shaking ink.

"Do not seek the Keepers."

"They will seek you."

The chamber doors burst open.

Malachor entered.

He rarely hurried.

Today he did.

"We have visitors."

Elowen closed the journal.

"Imperial?"

He shook his head.

"Worse."

She frowned.

"I thought you didn't believe in worse."

"I didn't."

Until today.

Outside the Night Spire, the sky had changed.

Clouds spiraled above the mountain peaks.

Not storm clouds.

Ash-colored clouds that reflected neither sunlight nor moonlight.

At the center of the causeway stood twelve riders.

Every horse was white.

Every cloak was silver.

Every rider carried the same crystal spear.

No banners.

No insignia.

Only silence.

The leader removed his hood.

His hair was silver despite his youthful face.

One eye shone like the sun.

The other reflected endless night.

Every vampire on the walls instinctively stepped backward.

Even the oldest nobles looked afraid.

Malachor's expression hardened.

"I know you."

The stranger inclined his head.

"And I remember you."

Elowen looked between them.

"You've met?"

"Once."

Malachor's voice had become colder than winter.

"Before I became king."

The stranger's gaze settled upon Elowen.

"So."

"You are the bridge."

"I am Elowen."

"I know who you are."

His eyes shifted toward the Night Spire.

"I also know what now lives beneath your feet."

Seraphine arrived moments later with an Imperial escort.

She stopped the instant she saw the silver-cloaked riders.

Her composure broke.

"No..."

One of the Imperial guards whispered in disbelief.

"The Keepers..."

The word spread through everyone present.

Like a forgotten nightmare suddenly remembered.

The silver-haired stranger looked calmly at both rulers.

"My name is Caelum."

"I speak for the Keepers of the First Dawn."

He planted his crystal spear into the black stone.

It pierced the obsidian as though it were soft clay.

"I bring no army."

His gaze rested on Elowen.

"I bring judgment."

Silence swallowed the mountain.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Then Caelum spoke the words that neither the Empire nor the Court had expected to hear.

"The Hunger is not your greatest mistake."

He looked at Malachor.

"You are."

Then at Seraphine.

"So are you."

Finally...

He looked directly into Elowen's eyes.

"And unless you surrender the seal willingly..."

"The Keepers will destroy the Night Spire."

The threat hung over the mountain like a blade.

No anger.

No hatred.

Only absolute conviction.

For the first time since the beginning of their journey, Elowen understood the truth.

The Empire and the Obsidian Court had never been the oldest powers in the world.

They had merely inherited a conflict.

Now...

The ones who had created the first prison had returned.

And they had come to finish what history had left unfinished.
