The remnants of the plaza lay fractured and silent, save for the faint hum of distant drones. Steel and glass littered the ground, shimmering in fractured sunlight. Blake moved along the debris with the same calculated precision as always, a ghost among ruins that seemed to shift beneath his every step.
In the distance, he noted movement—small figures, organized and methodical. Hunter Association scouts, by their formation and scanning patterns. Their focus was on anomalies, but he cataloged their paths, noting their blind spots, their miscalculations.
A micro-flashback struck: an early reconnaissance mission, navigating a collapsing industrial complex, the lesson clear—always anticipate patterns beyond what the eye perceives. That instinct now guided him as he observed the scouts from the shadows.
Weapon vibration alerted him to subtle changes in structural integrity. Dry commentary: "Predictive models do not account for unknown observers." Blake smirked, adjusting his step to remain unseen. The observers in his own devices tracked him imperfectly; he did not care. He had long since perfected invisibility.
A temporary enemy emerged, drawn by a displaced beam or a stray shard of glass. Blake allowed it to pass, unseen, cataloging its behavior and movement patterns. The shadows flickered around him, teasing him with hints of a presence not fully tangible.
Dialogue, brief and dry, echoed through his mind as the weapon commented: "They notice. Not you. Them. Inefficient." Observers murmured faintly through static: "Pattern detected? No, anomaly persists." Blake's lips quirked; the words were irrelevant. Their panic was an echo, a reminder of predictability he could exploit.
As he advanced through the plaza, the scouts' formation wavered slightly. He noted every gap, every hesitation, cataloging for potential leverage. The air carried the metallic tang of distant energy discharges, hinting at residual anomaly activity.
