Getting out of Layer Seven was harder than infiltration.
The archives had triggered full security response following Kaelen's encounter with Aldric. Every exit point had enhanced guard presence. Scanner arrays were operating at maximum sensitivity. The entire Auric District was effectively under soft lockdown until Family security determined whether infiltrator remained in territory or had already fled.
Kaelen moved through maintenance sublevel, avoiding guard patrols through careful timing and eclipse-enhanced perception. His corruption provided advantage—he could perceive thermal signatures and electromagnetic patterns through walls, tracking security movements before they reached his position.
But the advantage came with cost. His neural preservation was declining with each hour of sustained heightened awareness. Seventy-three point two percent now. The degradation was accelerating toward threshold where cognitive function would become unreliable.
He needed to extract from Layer Seven before that threshold arrived.
The smuggler tunnel he'd used for entry was blocked—guards positioned at checkpoint with orders to detain anyone attempting to leave aristocratic territory without proper authorization. Using that route would mean direct confrontation with security forces that could call for Family core-bearer reinforcement.
Unacceptable risk given his current corruption level and neural state.
Kaelen accessed alternative route Kira had provided as backup extraction option—freight elevator system serving industrial facilities on Layer Seven's periphery. The elevators moved cargo between layers with minimal security compared to passenger systems. Most contraband reached aristocratic territory through this route.
The elevator access was in northeastern industrial sector, three kilometers from Kaelen's current position. He moved through maintenance passages at enhanced speed, burning void energy to maintain pace that outstripped pursuing guards.
His corruption climbed to sixty-seven point six percent during transit. Neural preservation dropped to seventy-three.
The freight elevator loading bay appeared ahead—massive cargo platform with industrial equipment and minimal security presence. Automated systems handled most operations, with human oversight only during shift-change periods.
Kaelen approached during automated operation window, slipping onto descending cargo platform that would return to Layer Six industrial zones. The descent took fifteen minutes—ample time for security to coordinate interception if they'd tracked his position.
But the elevator reached Layer Six without incident. Either Aldric had actually reported the encounter as Kaelen instructed, or security was still searching upper-level locations rather than realizing infiltrator had already fled.
He stepped off the platform into familiar territory—Layer Six's industrial heat and chemical-laden air that felt almost welcoming after Layer Seven's sterile perfection.
His comm relay vibrated. Kira's signal.
"Status?" she asked when he activated the channel.
"Extraction successful. Intelligence acquired. Encountered Family security but negotiated non-lethal resolution." Kaelen moved through industrial sector toward safe house location. "Corruption at sixty-seven point six percent. Neural preservation at seventy-three. Timeline is compressing faster than projected."
"What intelligence did you acquire?"
"God's resurrection is automated process triggered by divine energy accumulation. Convergence threshold in eighteen months. Eclipse elimination accelerates resurrection by releasing void energy into Underlayer." Kaelen transmitted the photographed documents to Kira's systems. "Also acquired intelligence about Lucian. He's in Layer Eight resonance suppression following unauthorized contact with me."
"Layer Eight infiltration is beyond network capabilities," Kira said bluntly. "Security there exceeds anything we can overcome with available resources."
"I know. But I'm going anyway." Kaelen's tone carried finality. "Lucian has information I need. And the twin resonance provides capabilities that might be essential for whatever comes next."
"When?"
"After I consolidate current intelligence. Maybe two days. Long enough to coordinate with network about convergence threshold data, brief enough that neural degradation doesn't compromise infiltration capability."
"You're operating on borrowed time."
"I've been operating on borrowed time since awakening. This is just more explicit countdown." Kaelen reached the safe house, confirmed it was unsecured, entered. "I'll transmit full intelligence analysis tonight. Coordinate with Artemis and S about convergence implications. We need strategy that addresses eighteen-month timeline."
"Understood. And Kaelen—good work. Layer Seven infiltration without fatalities or immediate capture is remarkable achievement."
Transaction-based acknowledgment. The kind that meant more than empty sentiment.
Kaelen settled into the safe house, his corruption pulsing through sixty-seven point six percent of his biology, consciousness degrading toward threshold where complex thought would become impossible.
But he'd accomplished the objective. Acquired intelligence proving divine resurrection was real threat with specific timeline. Learned that eclipse elimination was feeding exactly the outcome Families claimed to prevent.
And confirmed that climbing toward revenge might be climbing toward apocalypse that would destroy everyone.
The mathematics had become impossibly complex.
But complexity just meant more variables to calculate, more scenarios to evaluate, more possibilities to convert from improbable into actual.
The climb continued.
Three point six days of consciousness remaining.
Eighteen months until divine convergence.
Layer Eight infiltration scheduled for two days from now.
The countdown accelerated toward multiple simultaneous endpoints.
