Chapter 4 - Chapter- 4: The Incident

Two years had passed since Matt had begun his training regimen—two years of grueling physical conditioning, relentless discipline, and sweat-soaked days.

At twelve years old, the transformation in Matt was impossible to ignore.

Gone was the awkward, clumsy boy of his earlier years; in his place stood a kid whose movements carried a natural, fluid grace.

Muscle had begun to leanly frame his posture, and his reflexes were sharp.

What unsettled most people was how effortlessly he adapted to the punishing routine. Matt had his complaints, of course, but he was a firm believer in a simple rule: whining never solved a problem. Action did.

Beyond the training center, Matt balanced his physical grind with stellar academic results.

Meanwhile, April was excelling in her own right, poised to secure admission to a top-tier college before long.

Between study sessions and training, Matt had even competed in a handful of local youth tournaments organized by his training center.

He had swept through the brackets with quiet dominance, earning himself a bit of local fame in their New York neighborhood.

It was these simple victories and quiet moments that made the hard work worthwhile.

***********

The morning sun filtered warmly through the kitchen blinds as Matt sat down for breakfast with his mother, Elizabeth, and his older sister, April.

The aroma of freshly cooked eggs and toasted bread filled the cozy dining room.

"Like I said, April. You need to get out more," Elizabeth said, nudging a plate of toast toward her daughter. "Life isn't all textbooks and exam prep. Maybe try going on a date? A nice movie, a coffee perhaps?"

April, halfway through a sip of orange juice, nearly choked. "Mom!" she protested, her cheeks flushing bright red. "Can we please not talk about my nonexistent love life at seven in the morning again?"

Elizabeth laughed off the reaction, resting her chin on her hand with an amused grin. "I'm just saying, sweetheart. You're far too pretty to be spending every weekend wrapped up in reference books."

Matt chuckled into his cereal bowl. "She's got a point, sis. Though considering how high your standards are, I feel sorry for whoever eventually attempts to ask you out."

April threw a piece of crust at Matt, which he caught effortlessly out of the air with hand. "Quiet, you. Don't even think about joining mom today."

Elizabeth giggled while turning her bright gaze onto Matt next. "Speaking of romantic endeavors... What about you, young man? Any girls at school catching your eye lately? Or is it still just you and Foggy against the world?"

Matt paused, swallowing his milk carefully to avoid spraying it across the table. "Mom, I am twelve. My hormones might be kicking in, but they aren't kicking that hard."

"Hey, I'm just offering maternal wisdom," Elizabeth said smoothly, tapping her chest. "If you ever need tips on how to charm someone, your dear old mother is a certified expert."

Matt grinned, flashing a theatrical smile. "Oh, please. You? Old? Mom, you still look younger than the morning sun."

Elizabeth burst into a hearty laugh, fanning her face playfully. "Oh, stop it! You absolute flatterer!"

April lowered her head onto the table with a soft groan. "How did I end up as the only sane person in this family?" she muttered under her breath, shaking her head in dramatic exasperation.

A sudden chime from the doorbell that broke the banter.

"I'll get it," Matt said, pushing himself up from the table.

He unlatched the front door to find a familiar face standing on the welcome mat. Foggy Nelson stood there, backpack slung over one shoulder, wearing a cheerful morning smile.

"Hey, Foggy!" Matt greeted warmly.

"Hey, Matt!" Foggy replied.

The two immediately executed their ridiculously elaborate handshakes—a rapid sequence of twip-thwacks, elbow taps, chest bumps, and a crisp final hand-snap that they had spent weeks perfecting.

Foggy's attention turned towards the rest of the family members.

"Morning, Mrs. O'Neil! Morning, April!" Foggy called out politely as he stepped into the entryway.

"Morning, sweetheart. And how many times do I have to tell you? Call me Elizabeth," Elizabeth said with a bright smile. "You make me feel like a school principal."

Foggy rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Ah, I try, Mrs. O—I mean, Elizabeth. It just feels wrong not being polite!"

"Well, someone's incorrigible," April joked, looking up with a soft smile and bid Foggy a good morning too.

"Have you eaten yet?" Elizabeth asked Foggy, gesturing toward the kitchen. "I made extra."

Foggy's eyes flickered toward the kitchen counter, catching a whiff of the bacon, but he shook his head politely. "Oh, thank you, but I already had breakfast at home. I appreciate it, though!"

Elizabeth put a hand over her heart, faking immense heartbreak. "Rejected again... What am I going to do with all these extra pancakes?"

Matt grabbed Foggy by the shoulder before his friend's appetite convinced him to accept a second breakfast. "Nice try, Mom, but we're going to be late. See you guys later!"

"Have a good day at school, boys! Stay safe!" Elizabeth called out as Matt pulled Foggy out the front door.

************

The morning air was crisp and clear as the two boys walked down the sidewalk toward their middle school.

The streets of New York were just beginning to bustle with morning traffic, commuters rushing past, and shopkeepers rolling up their security gates.

"So, how's the training going?" Foggy asked, adjusting his backpack strap. "Still beating up heavy bags every afternoon?"

"It's awesome, honestly," Matt said, throwing a couple of light practice jabs into the air. "My footwork is so much faster now. You should really come check out the gym sometime, Foggy. A couple of months of basic conditioning and you'd be amazed at what you can do. Plus, you know... girls dig guys who know how to protect themselves."

Foggy snorted, shaking his head. "Yeah, right. Have you seen me run? I get winded going up two flights of stairs. Physical combat is for guys like you, Matt. Me? I'm strictly intellectual powerhouse material." He tapped his temple with a smirk. "The brain is my primary weapon."

"You're hopeless," Matt groaned lightheartedly. "Just one kickboxing class. That's all I'm asking."

"Not a chance, buddy. I would rather stick to the debate club and stay alive," Foggy replied with a grin.

************

A few blocks away, a heavy transport truck bearing the bold logo of TCRI was rumbling through the city streets.

Inside the cab, the driver rubbed his bleary eyes, letting out a deep yawn. He had been working back-to-back overnight shifts, and exhaustion was weighing heavily on his eyelids.

With one hand on the steering wheel, he fumbled with his cell phone, trying to redial a number that kept going straight to voicemail.

"Come on, pick up damn it..." he muttered, irritation creeping into his voice.

When the call failed again, he tossed the phone onto the passenger seat in frustration.

Almost immediately, the phone buzzed and rattled, ringing with an incoming call.

The driver reached over blindly to grab it, but his calloused fingers knocked the device off the seat. It tumbled into the cramped footwell near the pedals.

"Mother Fucker," he cursed, bending down while keeping a loose grip on the wheel to feel around the floorboards.

For three crucial seconds, his eyes left the road.

When he finally pulled himself upright, his heart leaped into his throat.

Crossing the intersection directly ahead was an elderly man walking slowly with a cane, completely oblivious to the oncoming vehicle.

"Fuck!" the driver screamed, slamming his foot onto the brake pedal while yanking the heavy steering wheel violently to the left.

The truck's massive tires locked up, screeching deafeningly against the asphalt and leaving thick black rubber marks.

The vehicle swerved sharply, narrowly missing the elderly pedestrian by inches. However, the sheer momentum of the heavy transport carried it sideways out of control, skidding dangerously toward the sidewalk.

The piercing sound of screeching rubber and frantic screams shattered the peaceful morning air.

***********

Matt's head snapped toward the sound. In an instant, his sharp reflexes took over.

Coming straight toward the sidewalk was a massive, unstable bulk of a truck, skidding sideways at a terrifying speed.

Foggy stood frozen in panic, his eyes wide as the shadow of the truck loomed over them.

"Foggy, watch out!" Matt yelled.

Without a second thought, Matt shoved Foggy with every ounce of strength in his body. The force sent Foggy flying sideways across the pavement, tumbling safely into a patch of grass near a storefront.

Foggy hit the ground, hard and dazed, but safe.

Matt, however, didn't have time to dodge.

The truck crashed violently into a streetlamp and a low concrete barrier just feet away, coming to a sudden, grinding halt.

The violent impact ruptured several metallic canisters stored in the rear container bed. A volatile, glowing chemical liquid burst out, splashing forcefully across the hood and raining down over the immediate area.

A heavy stream of the burning fluid splashed directly across Matt's face and upper body.

At first, as the foul-smelling liquid drenched his skin, Matt felt an icy, numbing cold. He gasped, his chest heaving, trembling from the sudden shock.

Then the cold ignited.

An unbearable, excruciating heat swept through his tissue. It felt as though his skin were being doused in liquid fire. The chemical seeped into his forehead, his cheeks, and most brutally, directly into his eyes.

"AAARRRGGHH!"

Matt fell to his knees on the pavement, a blood-curdling scream tearing from his throat. He clutched his face wildly, writhing on the ground as agony racked his entire frame. It felt as if white-hot needles were burning through his optic nerves.

"Matt! Matt!" Foggy cried, scrambling up from the grass with tears streaming down his face.

Foggy rushed toward his friend, terrified by the horrifying sight of Matt clutching his eyes in utter torment.

A crowd of shocked onlookers began to gather at a distance, gasping in horror at the boy's agonizing screams.

"Somebody help him! Please! Help us!" Foggy sobbed, his voice cracking as he reached out, unsure of where to touch Matt without causing more pain. "Matt, hold on! Please, hold on!"

Matt couldn't hear him clearly. His ears were ringing with a deafening roar. His senses were warping, exploding outward in a chaotic overload—he could hear the hyper-amplified sound of distant car horns, the pounding heartbeat of the frantic driver, the stench of metallic fumes, the rough texture of every grain of pavement beneath his fingers.

No... Please, God, no... Matt pleaded internally, his vision fading behind a blistering storm of white light and darkness. Don't take my eyes... Please... I want to see my mom... I want to see April...

No answer came to his desperate prayer.

The harsh sunlight dimmed, dissolving into shadow, until everything turned completely dark.

As the distant wail of approaching ambulance sirens began to echo down the street, Matt's screaming faded into faint whimpers, and his body finally fell limp, slipping into unconsciousness.
