Stanwick extended his razor-sharp iron talons, the titanium blades catching the ambient shimmer of the Hextech lanterns lining the high thoroughfares of Piltover. A low, raspy chuckle scraped from behind his metallic visage.
"Now, my dear colleague..." Stanwick purred, the voice distorted by his suit's dampeners, "let us settle our account once and for all."
Before Viktor could process the threat, the massive mechanical wings snapped backward with a deafening thrum.
Iron talons clamped down around Viktor's torso like a vice, pinning his arms to his sides. With a violent surge of thrusters, Stanwick launched himself straight into the night sky.
Viktor shrieked in terror as the cobblestone plaza dropped beneath them in a dizzying blur, but his cries fell on deaf ears.
Above the rushing wind, Stanwick's mocking laughter echoed across the towers of the City of Progress.
*************
Below, Kyle lay flat on his back, gasping for air. His ears were still ringing loudly, a sharp, metallic whine rattling the inside of his skull.
He hadn't expected a literal sonic-blasting cannon to detonate out of nowhere.
The concussion had hit him like a freight train, rattling his bones and leaving him momentarily inert.
Kyle felt genuinely stupid for underestimating an enemy in a world filled with high-tech arcana and deadly Hextech inventions.
Come on, Spidey... get up, he scolded himself, pressing his palm to his forehead as his Spider-Sense throbbed in rhythm with his pounding headache.
He pushed himself up onto all fours, his body groaning in protest. Bruised ribs flared with pain, and when he coughed, he tasted the iron tang of blood.
But as his vision cleared, he looked toward the skyline and saw the dark silhouette of the mechanical vulture ascending into the clouds, carrying a struggling Viktor in its clutches.
Failing to save a friend? That was a line Kyle refused to cross. It would be the ultimate insult to everything he stood for.
Grouting his teeth, Kyle shook off the dizziness and forced himself to his feet. "Alright, bird-brain," he grunted, firing a web-line toward a higher archway. He pulled hard with both arms, launching himself into the cool night air to take the fight to the sky.
************
High above the pristine avenues of Piltover, the wind whipped violently around Viktor as he flailed within the creature's metal grip. Cold air bit at his face, but panic burned hot in his chest.
"Who are you?!" Viktor yelled over the roar of the thrusters, his voice strained and desperate. "Why are you doing this?! What could you possibly want from me? From all of this?!"
The flying attacker slowed his ascent, hovering over the chasm between two colossal spires.
With a slow, deliberate movement of his gauntlets, the figure unlatched his heavy metallic mask and pulled it back, revealing the spiteful, lined face beneath.
Viktor blinked through the wind-tears, his brilliant mind racing to pull the image from memory. The harsh brow, the thinning hair, the cruel, bitter mouth...
"Stanwick?" Viktor gasped, genuine bewilderment replacing his fear for a fraction of a second.
"Finally," Stanwick mused, a cruel smile curling his lips. "It has been far too long since I heard my name spoken by someone who matters. Even if it comes from a thief like you."
The pieces clicked together in Viktor's mind instantly. Stanwick Padidly—the disgraced inventor and former professor at Piltover Academy.
The man who had systematically stolen the work of brilliant, vulnerable students, driving one promising youth to suicide before burying the evidence.
It had been Kyle and Viktor who gathered the proof, exposed Stanwick's fraud to the Council, and dismantled his career piece by piece.
Now, the disgrace had returned, clad in a terrifying frame of brass, steel, and Hextech energy, seeking a debt paid in blood.
"It seems that renowned intellect of yours is finally working," Stanwick snarled, coming to a dead halt in mid-air.
Viktor twisted violently in the harness, trying to dig his elbows into the suit's joint seams. "What you did was a crime, Stanwick! You ruined lives! Exposing you wasn't malice—it was justice!"
SMACK!
Stanwick's heavy gauntlet struck Viktor across the jaw, sending a metallic ringing through his teeth and blinding white pain across his vision. Viktor's head snapped back, his breath catching in his throat.
"Justice?!" Stanwick screamed, his face contorting in manic rage as he grabbed Viktor by the chin, forcing him to look into his bloodshot eyes. "Do you have any idea what it feels like to be cast into the gutter?! To be stripped of your titles, your research, your dignity?! You left me to rot! You destroyed my legacy!"
"You destroyed yourself!" Viktor spat through a mouthful of blood.
Stanwick backhanded him again, harder this time, causing Viktor's vision to blur.
"Your righteous little crusade created this!" Stanwick roared, his voice cracking with unhinged fury. "Your 'justice' made this monster! Your 'justice' forged the Vulture! And now, my dear boy, you are going to test gravity!"
Stanwick unclasped his talons completely.
"No—!"
Viktor plummeted. The wind rushed past his ears in a deafening roar as the glittering lights of Piltover raced up to meet him.
He reached out into the empty air, his stomach leaping into his throat, absolute terror consuming his senses as he fell toward the unforgiving stone streets hundreds of feet below.
Is this how it ends? Viktor thought, closing his eyes as the air grew thick and heavy.
Suddenly, a streak of bright red and blue tore through the dark.
"Not on my watch!"
Kyle dived straight down, tucking his arms to minimize drag and accelerating faster than terminal velocity.
Just meters before Viktor would have slammed into the cobblestones, Kyle extended a hand, shot a thick cushion of webbing between two light poles to catch the worst of the speed, and scooped Viktor into his arm in one fluid motion.
The sudden deceleration yanked them laterally, but Kyle absorbed the force, swinging up into a wide arc around a clock tower.
Viktor opened his eyes, gasping for breath, completely disoriented as he found himself cradled securely against Spider-Man's chest.
"You know, buddy," Kyle joked, adjusting his grip as they soared over a glass dome, "you really need to look into getting a lighter cloak. This whole rescue thing is hell on my biceps."
"YOU FILTHY PEST!"
A shriek of rage echoed from above. Stanwick was diving straight down like a bird of prey, his Hextech wings folded back to maximize speed, his titanium talons extended.
Before Kyle could swing clear, Stanwick swept past and sliced through the web-line with a single stroke of his wing-blade.
The tension snapped instantly. Kyle and Viktor went into a freefall, tumbling toward the glass side of a high-rise residential building.
"Hold on!" Kyle yelled at the screaming Viktor.
Mid-spin, he aimed his web-shooter upward and fired a line straight at Stanwick's trailing leg.
THWIP!
The web connected firmly. As Stanwick tried to pull up and climb into the clouds, the sudden tension jerked him downward, tying his flight path directly to the falling duo.
A flying tug-of-war erupted across the Piltover skyline. Stanwick veered wildly to the left, trying to drag Kyle and Viktor across the side of the skyscraper to crush them against the concrete and glass.
"Oh no you don't!" Kyle barked.
Using the kinetic energy of the swing, Kyle planted his boots firmly onto the vertical glass facade of the building.
With Viktor securely tucked under one arm like a football, Kyle ran horizontally across the sheer glass wall, his sticky feet anchoring him effortlessly against the smooth surface while Stanwick fought the line above.
Reaching the edge of the building, Kyle released the web attached to Stanwick's leg, using the momentum to vault into a magnificent high arc.
He flipped forward once, twice, and touched down softly onto the flat roof of an adjacent library, landing in a classic crouch while carrying Viktor like a bride.
Kyle set Viktor down gently. "There you go. Safe and sound, pal."
Viktor didn't answer. He immediately dropped to his knees, turned away, and emptied the contents of his stomach onto the rooftop tiles.
Kyle grimaced behind his mask, taking a quick step back. "Uh... gross. But, hey, totally valid reaction to high-speed aerial acrobatics." He knelt down and patted Viktor's back reassuringly. "Take a minute. You're safe."
The moment of calm was shattered by the screech of jet thrusters.
Stanwick was swooping back around, his eyes burning red through his targeting reticle, thoroughly consumed by murderous intent.
"I WILL TEAR YOU APART, BUG!" Stanwick shrieked, coming straight down the rooftop vector like a missile.
Kyle stood up slowly, stepping in front of the incapacitated Viktor. "Very well. No more games then."
As the Vulture closed the gap, Kyle fired twin web-lines directly onto the villain's broad metal chestplate. The sheer momentum of Stanwick's flight pulled Kyle forward, dragging his boots across the roof, leaving dark rubber scuffs on the stone.
Kyle dug his heels into the rooftop ledge, skidding to a halt mere inches from the drop-off. With his jaw set and his muscles straining against the suit, Kyle tapped into his raw, enhanced strength.
"My turn!" Kyle grunted.
He planted his feet and pulled back with tremendous force, forcefully hauling the flying villain inward.
Stanwick tried to flare his wings to brake, slicing out with his left wing-blade to sever the lines. Kyle anticipated the move, shooting another dense web cluster that pinned the left wing structure back against Stanwick's torso.
With a mighty heave, Kyle reeled Stanwick in like a fish on a line. As the Vulture flew involuntarily into his range, Kyle wound up his right fist and delivered a devastating, rock-solid hook straight to Stanwick's helmeted jaw.
CRACK!
The force of the impact shattered Stanwick's visor and sent the villain flying backward into the open night air, his flight thrusters sputtering uselessly as he plummeted toward the lower alleyways.
Kyle turned back to Viktor, who was leaning against a ventilation shaft, still breathing heavily. "Stay here," Kyle instructed softly. "I'm wrapping this up."
Before Viktor could speak, Spider-Man leapt over the edge, plunging into the dark abyss after the falling villain.
**************
Mid-fall, Stanwick gasped for air, his vision swimming with stars from the force of the punch. Before he could regain control of his gyro-stabilizers, a web line snagged his harness, pulling him sideways into a secluded, high-walled alcove along the building's facade.
THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!
Kyle slammed Stanwick into the stone brickwork and immediately pinned his shoulders and wings with thick layer upon layer of webbing.
Stanwick thrashed, but he couldn't move a muscle. Kyle landed on the wall right in front of him, his eyes narrowed behind his white lenses.
"You put innocent people in danger," Kyle said, his voice cold and devoid of his usual playful banter. "You even tried to murder innocent people "
"You... you don't understand..." Stanwick wheezed, blood trickling from his broken nose. "They stole everything from me..."
Kyle didn't hesitate. He delivered a brutal, precise body blow straight to Stanwick's solar plexus, followed by a sharp kidney strike and a crisp left jab to the jaw. Punch after punch landed with terrifying speed and discipline, breaking armor plates and crushing Stanwick's spirit until the villain was reduced to sobbing whimpers.
"Please..." Stanwick choked out, coughing up blood against his chest. "Stop... I-I am begging you, please..."
Kyle halted his fist an inch from Stanwick's face. He took a slow breath, letting his heart rate settle. Then, with a single, quick snap of his wrist, he delivered one final, precise tap to Stanwick's chin, knocking the villain unconscious.
Working with methodical, surgical precision, Kyle systematically dismantled the Hextech flight pack. He unlatched the power cells, disabled the wing actuators, and pulled the dangerous metal apparatus off Stanwick's body piece by piece.
Once the suit was rendered completely inert, Kyle wrapped Stanwick in a thick cocoon of webbing, securing him upside down beneath an archway like a giant spider's catch.
In the distance, the sharp, rhythmic wail of Piltover Enforcer sirens began to reverberate through the streets.
Kyle looked down at the unconscious villain one last time, turned around, and shot a web into the night sky, swinging back to retrieve Viktor before the Enforcers arrived.
