Chapter 35 - Chapter Thirty-Five – Lines Crossed Again

The corridors were empty.

Not because the palace was quiet—never that—but because the summons had been private, deliberate, unavoidable.

Lyra's footsteps echoed softly against stone floors, her breath measured. She had known this meeting would come. And she had also known she could not refuse.

The chamber door opened before she reached it, and the Alpha was already there.

No guards. No witnesses. Just him, the room, and the bond humming between them like a living thing.

"You came," he said simply. His voice was calm, controlled—but the bond betrayed him.

Lyra's chest tightened. "I was summoned."

He studied her, eyes darkening. "You make it difficult to stay impartial."

She stepped closer. Not for him. Not deliberately. Just… instinctively. The bond flared violently. Heat coiled low in her stomach, curling upward in a way that made her pulse hammer. Her wolf pressed forward, restless, insistent.

He caught the shift. Not moving fast, not dominating, but aware. Too aware. Every breath she took, every inch she moved, his body registered before even his mind did.

"You've been testing limits," he said, slow, deliberate, almost a growl beneath the surface.

"And you've been resisting," she replied. Her voice was soft, steady—but her wolf urged her closer.

He exhaled sharply, jaw tightening. "And if I fail?"

She tilted her head, letting the light catch her eyes, letting him see her. "Then you'd finally be honest with yourself."

The room seemed to shrink. Time slowed.

He stepped closer—small, careful movements—but each one packed tension so thick it pressed against her skin. Her breath hitched, catching in the quiet. Their proximity alone ignited the bond further, each heartbeat like a drum in the air between them.

"Do you understand what's happening?" he murmured, lips just above hers, not yet touching.

"Yes," Lyra whispered. "I understand too well."

The space between them disappeared almost imperceptibly. His hand lifted to her cheek. Fingers brushing lightly, memorizing her warmth. Her hands rose instinctively, resting on his chest, feeling the steady power beneath his control.

And then—finally—he kissed her.

Not soft. Not polite. Not quick.

Long. Slow. Consuming.

Her lips parted instinctively, leaning into him, letting him lead the first taste of fire they had been denying each other for weeks.

A minute stretched into an eternity. The room ceased to exist. There was only warmth, only heat, only the bond responding to every subtle brush, every tilt of her head, every pull of her breath.

He pulled back slightly, enough to catch his own breath, forehead resting against hers. "I shouldn't…" His voice broke, low, strained, magnetic.

"Shouldn't what?" she whispered back.

"This," he admitted. "Any of this."

She smiled faintly, heart racing. "Then stop fighting it."

He exhaled, gripping her waist lightly, holding the space between desire and restraint. "I… can't. Not anymore."

Lyra closed her eyes for a moment, letting the intensity wash over her. Her wolf purred in approval, the bond thrumming loud and insistent.

Yet, as all slow-burn moments, it stopped before completion.

The Alpha stepped back finally, chest heaving, jaw clenched. "Enough," he said, almost to himself. "We cannot… here."

Lyra nodded, pulse still hammering, fingers lingering at his chest. "No. But it happened."

"Yes," he agreed quietly. Eyes dark, awareness still tightly wound around her. "And now… it changes everything."

The room seemed to exhale with them, tension lingering, heat still palpable, bond burning like a live wire neither could touch directly.

Lyra left the chamber slowly, deliberately, leaving him standing alone, chest rising and falling, hands clenched—aware more than ever of what the bond demanded, aware of what they both wanted but could not allow.

And both knew—the lines had been crossed. Not in body, but in heart, in mind, in fire.
