Chapter 1 - Prelogue: mom doesn't want to tell me why she gave me a necklace

Prelogue: mom doesn't want to tell me why she gave me a necklace

It was the day before summer camp. I was still packing cause I'm great at planning, when suddenly my mother came into my room. She was holding a small box, one that was rectangular and flat. It looked old and well loved. "What's that?" I ask patiently. "Oh, just a gift for you, from grandma." I looked at her with pure confusion, cause dead people can't just randomly send you gifts from the underworld. "She wanted you to have this." She hands me the box and opens it. In it there was a beautiful silver necklace, the pendant had a purple crystal on it- amethyst, my favorite. "It used to be hers, then mine and now it's yours" she explained. I didn't know grandma liked crystals, no one in my family really showed interest in them except for me. "She liked crystals?" I say my thoughts out loud. "Well not really.. it will all make sense after camp." "Camp?!" I exclaimed. "Yes, I can't say much yet." Then she said she needed to make dinner and hurried into the kitchen.

I finished with packing a couple hours later, still wondering what the necklace has to do with camp. I did remember my grandma used to be a counselor there, way back in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

During dinner I asked mom what she meant, like before she avoided the question and changed the topic (at least she didn't run away this time).
