Chapter 13

A Smile with Sharp Edges

Twinkle hated boredom.

So when Rachel Parulkar invited her out for coffee, she accepted without a second thought.

"Free food," Twinkle announced cheerfully as she slipped into the café booth. "You're officially my favorite person today."

Rachel laughed softly. "You're refreshing."

Twinkle grinned. "I get that a lot."

Rachel stirred her coffee slowly, watching her. "You and Najma are very close."

Twinkle's smile softened. "She's my sister."

Rachel tilted her head. "You're lucky. Some sisters… take things meant for you."

Twinkle blinked. "What does that mean?"

Rachel sighed, as if reluctant. "Nothing. I shouldn't have said anything."

Twinkle leaned forward immediately. "No, say it. I hate half sentences."

Rachel hesitated just long enough to appear conflicted. "Before Najma entered the picture… Ranveer was meant for someone else."

Twinkle frowned. "And?"

"And sometimes," Rachel continued gently, "people who are quiet know exactly how to step into places others were dreaming of."

Twinkle stiffened. "Najma doesn't do that."

"I'm sure she doesn't mean to," Rachel said softly. "But feelings aren't always innocent."

Twinkle laughed nervously. "You're saying she planned this?"

Rachel shook her head. "I'm saying you should be careful. She's very good at surviving."

The words lingered—uncomfortable, unexplained.

Later that evening, Twinkle burst into Najma's room.

"Did you ever like Rangeer?" she demanded.

Najma looked up slowly. "Why would you ask that?"

Twinkle crossed her arms. "Just answer."

Najma hesitated.

Twinkle's chest tightened.

"I did," Najma said honestly. "Briefly. Before I knew how you felt."

The room went quiet.

"And you never told me?" Twinkle whispered.

Najma stood. "Because I stepped back the moment I realized."

Twinkle shook her head. "You always step back. You always decide alone."

"I did it for you."

"That's what you say."

The anger spilled fast, unfiltered.

"Do you enjoy taking what people love and acting like a martyr afterward?" Twinkle snapped.

Najma's face went pale.

"Twinkle—"

"Maybe you should disappear from my life if you think you're doing me favors!"

The words hit like a slap.

Najma didn't argue.

She only nodded once.

"If that's what you want," she said quietly.

And walked out.

Rachel watched from a distance as Najma left the house that night.

Her lips curved.

The seed had taken root.
