Episode 13 – "Lines Drawn Softly"
THE REVIEW
INT. RESTAURANT – EARLY MORNING
Luke sits at a small table near the window.
A CITY REVIEWER, clipboard neat, smile polite.
REVIEWER
We're just doing routine follow-ups.
Luke nods.
LUKE
I like routine.
The reviewer scans a page.
REVIEWER
Your employment history shows… gaps.
Luke doesn't rush.
LUKE
Life's not always a straight line.
The reviewer looks up.
REVIEWER
Neither are public contracts.
A beat.
REVIEWER
We'll need clarification.
References. Personal.
Luke's jaw tightens — but he stays calm.
LUKE
I can provide what I have.
REVIEWER
We'll decide what's sufficient.
The reviewer stands.
REVIEWER
This won't affect the program.
Unless it has to.
The door closes.
Luke exhales — slow, controlled.
THE SUGGESTION
INT. SUPPLY OFFICE – LATE AFTERNOON
Diane flips through invoices.
A KNOCK.
She opens the door to a CITY LIAISON — friendly, casual.
LIAISON
Off the record?
Diane crosses her arms.
DIANE
That depends who's asking.
The liaison smiles.
LIAISON
There's concern about optics.
Diane already knows where this is going.
DIANE
Say it.
LIAISON
The program would run smoother if your…
front-facing staff aligned better with expectations.
Diane narrows her eyes.
DIANE
Meaning Luke.
The liaison shrugs.
LIAISON
Temporary reassignment.
Back of house.
No headlines.
A folder is placed on the desk.
LIAISON
And in exchange—
an extension.
Maybe more funding.
Diane doesn't touch the folder.
DIANE'S CROSSROAD
Later.
Diane sits alone, folder unopened.
Her phone buzzes.
AMARA (TEXT)
Everything okay?
Diane types. Deletes. Types again.
Finally:
DIANE (TEXT)
We need to talk. Tonight.
She looks at the folder.
Then pushes it into a drawer.
Doesn't lock it.
That matters.
LUKE & AMARA
INT. CLOSED DINING ROOM – NIGHT
Luke tells Amara everything.
Doesn't soften it.
Doesn't dramatize it.
Just truth.
When he's done, silence.
Amara nods slowly.
AMARA
They're testing boundaries.
LUKE
They're measuring risk.
AMARA
Same thing.
She steps closer.
AMARA
If you want to step back, I'll understand.
Luke looks at her — steady.
LUKE
I didn't come back to hide.
Amara takes that in.
AMARA
Then we don't move you.
We move together.
Luke lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
DIANE SPEAKS
Diane enters.
Drops the folder on the table.
Unopened.
DIANE
They offered me a cleaner picture.
Luke looks away.
Amara doesn't.
DIANE
I didn't take it.
AMARA
You could have.
DIANE
I know.
A beat.
DIANE
But I won't be the one who trades people for peace.
Luke meets her eyes.
Respect.
THE COST REVEALED
Diane taps the folder.
DIANE
They'll come back.
AMARA
Let them.
DIANE
Next time, they won't ask nicely.
Amara reaches for Luke's hand.
Public. Unhidden.
AMARA
Then we'll be ready.
TAG
Outside.
The restaurant glows warm against the night.
Inside, three people stand on the same side of the line.
Not untouched.
Not naïve.
But united.
FADE OUT. End of Episode 13

THE ESCALATION
INT. RESTAURANT – MORNING
A new email prints at the register.
Amara reads it once.
Then again.
Hands it to Diane.
DIANE
They added requirements.
AMARA
They added obstacles.
The email lists:
Surprise site visits
Staff interviews without notice
Revised performance metrics
Luke watches from the prep line.
Doesn't ask.
He already knows.
THE VISIT
INT. KITCHEN – LATER
Two CITY STAFFERS stand side by side.
Clipboards. Smiles that don't reach their eyes.
One of them — mid-40s — stares at Luke a beat too long.
Recognition flickers.
STAFFER #2
Luke?
Luke freezes.
Slowly looks up.
LUKE
Yeah.
The staffer studies him.
STAFFER #2
Didn't expect to see you here.
The room shifts.
Amara notices.
So does Diane.
THE PAST WALKS IN
INT. STORAGE HALLWAY – MOMENTS LATER
The same staffer steps aside with Luke.
STAFFER #2
You don't remember me.
Luke exhales.
LUKE
I remember everyone from that place.
The staffer nods.
STAFFER #2
I was intake.
Second floor.
That says enough.
A beat.
STAFFER #2
You disappeared.
LUKE
I got out.
The staffer looks at him — not unkind.
STAFFER #2
Good for you.
Then, quieter:
STAFFER #2
But this contract?
They'll ask questions I didn't.
AMARA SEES IT
Amara watches them from across the room.
She doesn't interrupt.
When the staffers leave, she waits.
Luke comes to her.
LUKE
Someone from before recognized me.
She nods.
AMARA
Before here.
LUKE
Before everything.
No shame. Just fact.
DIANE CONNECTS THE DOTS
INT. OFFICE – AFTERNOON
Diane searches a name from the visitor badge.
Her face tightens.
DIANE
They didn't send him randomly.
She looks up as Amara enters.
DIANE
This is targeted.
THE HARD CONVERSATION
INT. DINING ROOM – CLOSED – NIGHT
Luke tells the whole truth.
Not details — context.
Enough.
Silence follows.
Finally, Amara speaks.
AMARA
They're not looking for who you are now.
LUKE
They never do.
She reaches for his hand.
AMARA
Then we make now undeniable.
Luke studies her.
LUKE
That won't erase then.
AMARA
No.
But it changes what it means.
THE QUIET THREAT
Later.
A letter slides under the office door.
No logo.
No greeting.
"ADDITIONAL REVIEW PENDING."
Luke reads it.
Then folds it carefully.
LUKE
They're patient.
AMARA
So are we.
TAG
Outside, a CITY CAR idles longer than necessary.
Inside, the restaurant closes for the night.
Luke locks the door.
Amara stands beside him.
Not shielding.
Standing.
FADE OUT.

THE ALLY
INT. RESTAURANT – MIDDAY
The lunch rush thins.
Luke wipes down the prep table.
A familiar voice behind him.
INTAKE WORKER (MR. HARRIS)
You still cut onions the same way.
Luke turns.
Surprised — but not guarded.
LUKE
Didn't think you'd come back.
Mr. Harris shrugs.
HARRIS
Didn't think I'd want to.
Beat.
HARRIS
But I've been watching.
Luke waits.
That's his growth.
HARRIS
They're building a narrative.
Not a file — a story.
Luke nods once.
LUKE
I figured.
Harris lowers his voice.
HARRIS
They don't have what they want.
Yet.
Luke studies him.
LUKE
Why tell me?
Harris looks around the kitchen — clean, steady, alive.
HARRIS
Because people rarely look like the worst thing they've done.
And you never did.
That lands harder than praise.
THE WARNING
HARRIS
If they don't find dirt, they'll invite confession.
Voluntary transparency.
Luke exhales.
LUKE
That sounds cleaner.
HARRIS
It's sharper.
He hands Luke a card.
No logo.
Just a number.
HARRIS
If you decide to speak —
don't do it alone.
Then he leaves.
Luke stares at the card.
Hope, with weight.
AMARA'S DECISION
INT. OFFICE – NIGHT
Amara sits with the contract… and Luke's personnel file.
Two truths. One future.
Luke stands across from her.
Doesn't interrupt.
She closes the file.
AMARA
They don't care about context.
LUKE
They never do.
She looks up.
AMARA
If we say nothing, they'll say it for us.
Luke nods.
LUKE
And if we say something?
Amara leans back.
AMARA
Then we choose the frame.
That's leadership.
THE LINE
Luke steps closer.
LUKE
I don't want pity.
AMARA
You won't get it.
LUKE
I don't want forgiveness either.
Amara meets his eyes.
AMARA
Good.
This isn't about erasing anything.
A beat.
AMARA
It's about ownership.
DIANE JOINS
Diane enters quietly.
DIANE
I ran the numbers.
She sets a folder down.
DIANE
If the city pulls out —
we survive.
Luke looks at her.
LUKE
You didn't have to do that.
DIANE
Yes I did.
She looks to Amara.
DIANE
Tell enough to protect us.
Not enough to feed them.
Amara nods.
Decision made.
THE CHOICE
INT. DINING ROOM – AFTER HOURS
Amara records a short video on her phone.
No makeup. No script.
Luke stands just off camera.
AMARA
This restaurant believes in second chances —
not as slogans, but as practice.
She pauses.
AMARA
One of our leaders has a past that shaped him.
Not one that defines him.
She looks directly into the lens.
AMARA
We won't be sharing details.
We will be sharing standards.
She stops recording.
That's it.
No confession.
No spectacle.
Just boundaries.
THE ALLY MOVES
Later.
Luke's phone buzzes.
TEXT – HARRIS:
Smart framing.
They'll push back — but quieter now.
You're not alone.
Luke looks up.
Amara's watching him.
He nods once.
She nods back.
TAG
Outside, a city car passes.
Doesn't stop.
Inside, the restaurant hums with prep for tomorrow.
Luke ties his apron.
Amara hands him a clipboard.
Normal.
Earned.
FADE OUT.
