Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: Reborn as Kael Ardyn

Alex died without ceremony, There was no tunnel of light, No divine judgment.

No final words whispered by fate just cold.

Endless, suffocating cold.

His senses dissolved one by one...sound first, then touch, then thought itself. Even pain abandoned him, leaving behind a hollow absence where existence used to be.

So this is it, he thought distantly.

No luck this time.

Then...

A voice.

Not loud.

Not gentle.

Clear.

"Death confirmed."

The words rang through the darkness like a bell struck against his skull.

Alex tried to speak.

Nothing happened.

"Evaluating soul integrity."

Fragments of memory surged violently...Saint Academy, Elara's smile, the cliff, Sophia's scream, the burning in his chest.

Anger.Regret.Hatred.

"Soul compatibility detected."

The cold shattered.

Pain replaced it.

Not sharp...overwhelming.

Alex gasped.

Air tore into his lungs like knives as his body convulsed violently. His eyes flew open, light stabbing straight into his skull.

He screamed.

Then coughed.

Then screamed again.

Hands pressed him down.

"Easy...easy!" a voice said urgently.

Alex thrashed, vision blurring, chest burning like it was filled with broken glass. Every breath felt wrong. Too shallow. Too weak.

He tasted iron.

"Kael!" another voice cried. "Kael, breathe...please!"

Kael?

Alex froze.

Hands gripped his shoulders gently but firmly. Warmth flowed into him...mana, refined and controlled, easing the pain just enough for him to think.

He blinked.

The ceiling above him was unfamiliar...carved stone traced with faintly glowing sigils. Silk curtains fluttered beside tall windows. The bed beneath him was soft. Too soft.

This wasn't the academy infirmary.

This wasn't anywhere he recognized.

"Kael," the woman said again, her voice trembling. "You're awake."

Alex turned his head slowly.

Two people stood beside the bed.

A man, tall and imposing, his presence heavy even without releasing mana. Dark hair streaked faintly with silver. Eyes like shadows given form...deep, controlled, terrifyingly sharp.

And a woman.

Golden hair. Gentle eyes. Her hands glowed faintly as healing magic faded.

Their faces were etched with relief.

With love.

Alex's throat tightened.

I don't know them.

And yet...

His head exploded with memories.

Not his.

A child coughing blood into silk handkerchiefs.

Nights spent bedridden, too weak to stand.

Servants whispering behind closed doors.

Doctors shaking their heads.

A name spoken with fear and pity.

Kael Ardyn.

Noble.

Sickly.

Dying.

Alex gasped, clutching his chest.

"Kael!" the man barked, instantly alert.

"I..." Alex tried to speak.

His voice came out thin. Fragile.

Not his.

"Father…?" the word slipped out instinctively.

The man stiffened.

Then his expression softened.

"Yes," he said quietly. "I'm here."

The woman pressed a trembling hand to her lips, tears forming. "He said your name," she whispered. "He knows us."

Alex's heart pounded...not from fear, but realization.

I'm alive.

But not as Alex.

Not anymore.

The room slowly emptied. Servants retreated. Healers bowed and left. Silence settled thick and heavy.

Alex...Kael...lay staring at the ceiling.

His body felt wrong.

Thin. Weak. Brittle.

A single cough wracked his chest, leaving him breathless.

So this is my second life, he thought grimly.

Another weak body.

The lights dimmed.

And then...

The air shifted.

The temperature dropped just slightly.

A presence settled beside his bed.

Invisible.

Unavoidable.

"Reinitializing."

Alex's breath hitched.

The voice wasn't sound...it was meaning, pressed directly into his mind.

"Welcome, Host."

His eyes widened.

"No," he whispered. "You..."

"Designation confirmed: Kael Ardyn."

"Secondary soul imprint detected: Alex."

The presence felt amused.

"You may consider this… reincarnation."

A translucent interface unfolded before his eyes, sharp and clean.

SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE

Alex stared.

"You brought me back," he whispered.

"Correction," the System replied.

"You were reassigned."

His fingers curled weakly into the sheets.

"Why?"

A pause.

Then...

"Because your ability did not finish evolving."

Images flashed...Weakling's Luck feeding, adapting, learning.

"Parasite-type abilities do not mature in one lifetime."

Alex swallowed.

"What do you want from me?"

The System leaned closer...he could feel it.

"Survival."

Text shifted.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

SurVIVE FOR 90 DAYS

FAILURE RESULT:

SOUL TERMINATION

Alex laughed weakly.

"So I'm on a timer."

"You always were."

New data scrolled.

BODY STATUS:

• Constitution: CRITICAL

• Mana Circulation: FRAGMENTED

• Parasite Ability: DORMANT (ADAPTING)

"Your new body is fragile," the System continued.

"But your potential ceiling is… acceptable."

Alex exhaled slowly.

He thought of Elara.

Of the cliff.

Of being used.

Discarded.

Killed.

"Fine," he whispered. "I'll survive."

The System hummed.

"Wise."

"First task will be assigned shortly."

The interface vanished.

The room returned to normal.

But Alex knew...

Nothing was normal anymore.

The door creaked open.

A man entered quietly.

Older. Thin. Perfect posture.

A butler named Jenkins.

His eyes were calm. Observant.

Dangerously so.

"Master Kael," he said, bowing slightly. "It's time for your medication."

Alex watched him carefully.

The System whispered.

"Warning."

Alex's gaze sharpened.

"Leave it," he said weakly, forcing a cough. "I'll take it later."

The butler paused.

Just for a fraction of a second.

Then nodded. "As you wish."

As he turned to leave, the shadows in the room moved with him.

Alex noticed.

And smiled faintly.

So this world is dangerous too.

Good.

He closed his eyes.

This time...

He would be ready.
