Chapter 5 - A mercenary's life

"Kinda cool? Is that the best you got?" Jenny shrugged and ate some more, finishing all the fruit in the plate. "I don't just say that for anybody y'know"

Arthur walked over to the door and opened it, turning around one last time. "Whatever. Put on some of your clothes and go to the living room, there's someone that wants to see you"

Arthur exited the room and Jenny got ready, leaving the room and heading to the living room. The place looked like a small apartment in what looked like the most dangerous place of the town. Jenny knew this place, she had done some jobs in here, most heroes didn't even dare to enter this part of the city.

In the living room, there was a middle aged man. He was wearing some kind of lab coat, though it was ragged and dirty, he was watching TV with Arthur besides him drinking a beer.

"Um... Are you the one who saved me?" The middle aged man turned around and stared directly at her.

"Damn right I am! You better be grateful. I took a high risk taking you in here"

"Why did you do it then?" The middle aged man turned to Arthur, who was boredly watching the TV "This guy owes me a favor now, he may not seem like it, but he is a pretty capable individual. I mean, he did save your ass back there, didn't he?" Arthur looked at him and put the beer on the table.

"Right. We'll be going now, Barns" Barns nodded at him and sent them off.

"Alright, let's go Jenny" Jenny was confused, nonetheless, she followed Arthur outside.

"Where are we going?"

"To pay back the favor"

"And how are we going to do that?" Arthur looked around and saw the people in the area looking at them carefully.

"Becky, Barn's assistant was kidnapped a few days ago. Knowing this part of the city, she is probably dead already so he wants to atleast recover her body" Arthur looked a little down for a moment before he regained that calm face of his.

"Did you know her?" Arthur reached into his pocket and pulled what it seemed like a pretty old photo. "This was me and her when we were kids. We weren't even that close to begin with, but I'm still pretty pissed about her dead, atleast I'll get revenge for her"

Jenny smiled sadly and patted him in the back. "I'll help you with that" Arthur raised an eyebrow "Well yeah, that's why you're here"

Jenny rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Now that I think about it, why do we pay Barns with favors instead of money?" Arthur just stared at her "Do you have money?" Jenny shook her head.

"No" Arthur shrugged "Me neither, I'm kinda broke since I left the superhero agency"

"How have you been living until now?"

"With little jobs like this, I guess you could say I'm kind of like a mercenary" After that the conversation ended, they talked a little more about some mundane things while they strolled around, looking for traces of Becky.

A few rough-looking guys attempted to approach them from time to time, but Arthur just revealed the gun beneath his coat and scared them off.

"You seem familiar with this type of lifestyle"

"Yeah, I lived here most part of my infancy. My dad was a scumbag from a gang of the zone and I never knew about my mother, maybe she's still around, I don't really know"

Jenny seemed shocked, Arthur didn't strike him as someone with that kind of lifestyle at first glance. His skin seemed soft and his hair was brilliant.

"How did your father die, if it isn't too much to ask?" Arthur thought for a moment, as if he was remembering and then he answered.

"The rival gang got him and shot him dead. An appropiate end for someone like him, I guess"

"Did you not have a good relationship with him?"

"A relationship? Nah, if anything we were almost like housemates. Always had to take care of myself, he didn't really worry about me at all, but it was sometimes convenient, so we sticked together"

"I see. I can't relate, though. I always had both my parents and a good education, they died in an accident two years ago, but they were both pretty old" Now Arthur looked interested and it was his turn to ask questions.

"How did you turn this way, then? Why would a spoiled child turn into a villain?"

Jenny chuckled and put her hands in her pocket. "A rebellious phase, I guess? Never did anything that serious, to be honest. I've burned some people to death, but it was always deserved"

"Deserved, huh? How are you sure it was deserved?"

"Well, they killed innocent people and stuff"

"Wow, such righteous heart. I killed people too, sometimes it was not that clear if they were innocent or guilty. Are you going to kill me, miss heroine at heart, then?"

Jenny didn't know how to respond and just stayed silent.

"If you don't, that would make you an hypocrite, like me"

Jenny was confused and was about to go deeper when something caught her eye. "Hey, what's that?" Arthur looked in her same direction and his eyes opened slightly.

Some guys were bringing inside an abandoned building a woman, same age as Arthur. Brown hair, broken glasses, and an overall dull and boring appearance.

"Who is that? Do you know her?"

"Well... Ain't that a surprise? Look's like our girl is still alive" Jenny was shocked.

"That's Becky?" Arthur nodded and indicated for her to be silent, then they snuck around and entered the building.

It was an unremarkable, plain, old building with nothing inside. But there was something off about the area. Arthur examinated the area and was confused when the odd feeling emanated from no one else's than Becky.

Curious, he snuck in a little closer.
