Mom burst into the kitchen at like seven-thirty the next morning. She wore her bright yellow sundress. It looked like she was ready for a TV ad. She waved two tickets and grinned so big I thought her face would break. "Boys! Get up, get dressed. We're going to the Harvest Fair today! It's tradition. The whole family goes. We eat too much fried food. We win stupid prizes. We pretend we're not all messed up. You two need this most. Quality couple time!"
I was drinking coffee right then. I burned my tongue bad. I spat half of it back into the mug. "Quality couple time? At a fair? With carnival rides and cotton candy? Yeah, no. I think I'll pass. I have a headache. Or diarrhea. You pick one."
