Then one afternoon I was sitting there, eleven going on twelve, mad at the world, when this older kid sixteen maybe plopped down on the swing next to me. Tall, messy hair, expensive jacket that looked like he stole it just to wear it. Grek. Didn't say anything at first. Just swung slow, matching my rhythm. After a minute he pulled a candy bar out of his pocket, broke it in half, held one piece out. "You look like shit. Eat."
I stared at him like he was crazy. "Who the hell are you?"
"Grek. And you're the kid who got adopted and now cries in parks alone. Take the damn candy."
