By the time we saw the first lights, I thought I was imagining them. For hours, we had walked through the forest. My legs ached and our clothes were dirty.
Branches had scratched my arms so many times that I'd stopped counting.
Even Hades, who had refused to complain throughout the entire journey, was beginning to move more slowly. Then, through the trees, I saw it. Warm yellow light. I stopped.
"Hades." He turned.
"What?" I pointed. His eyes followed my finger. He didn't say anything for what felt like seconds. Then he exhaled.
"A town." Relief rushed through me.
"We made it."
"Not yet." I frowned.
"What do you mean not yet?"
"We don't know which pack lives here." My excitement faded.
Right. We couldn't simply walk into the first town we found. Samael knew we had escaped and he would be searching. And as the Alpha king and ruler of the Royal Pack, he could have already sent word to surrounding territories. Hades stepped closer to the edge of the trees.
