Chapter 30 - 30 Under the Streetlight

Lucian did not move.

The streetlight hummed faintly above them. Cars passed at the end of the block. A door slammed somewhere behind Julian, followed by distant laughter.

Everything sounded normal.

Julian's hands were still stained with blood.

Lucian stood in front of him, coat torn at the shoulder, fabric dark and ruined, but skin beneath it whole.

Waiting.

Julian forced his voice steady.

"You knew this would happen."

Lucian's gaze did not waver. "Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Julian swallowed.

"You knew someone like that would come after me."

"I knew it was possible."

"And you still brought me into it."

Lucian studied him. "You chose to stand beside me."

Julian let out a short breath, almost a laugh, but there was no humor in it.

"You make that sound simple."

"It was."

Julian's jaw tightened. He looked down at his hands again. The blood was drying against his skin now, darkening in the light.

"It went through you," he said. "I saw it."

Lucian said nothing.

Julian lifted his eyes.

"I was in your bed."

The words came out sharper than he intended. Not loud. Not wild. Just clear.

Lucian did not look away.

"Yes."

Julian felt something twist in his chest.

"You let me."

"Yes."

The calm in that answer felt worse than denial.

Julian took a step forward this time. Not backward.

"You let me think you were human."

Lucian's expression did not change. "I never said I was."

"You never said you weren't."

Silence stretched between them.

The air felt thinner now.

Julian's thoughts moved too fast, colliding into each other.

Every night replayed.

Every time Lucian's hands had moved over him. Every time he had leaned in close enough to feel breath against his neck. Every quiet look across a room.

It all felt altered now.

"You watched me," Julian said quietly. "From the beginning."

"Yes."

"How long have you known."

Lucian held his gaze. "From the first night."

Julian's throat tightened.

"The rooftop."

"Yes."

Julian let out a slow breath.

"So I never had a chance to understand what I was walking into."

Lucian's voice stayed even. "You walked in because you wanted to."

That struck deeper than it should have.

Julian looked away briefly, then back at him.

"You should have told me."

"I intended to."

"When."

Lucian did not answer immediately.

Julian felt anger rise, slow and controlled.

"When it was convenient for you."

"When it was necessary."

"And tonight was necessary."

"Yes."

Julian's hands curled into fists.

"You could have died."

Lucian's eyes shifted, just slightly.

"No."

Julian stared at him.

"You say that like it's obvious."

"It is."

Julian took another step closer without realizing it. The distance between them shortened.

"Nothing about this is obvious," he said.

Lucian watched him carefully.

"I did not plan for you to see it like that."

"But you knew I would see something eventually."

"Yes."

"And you were going to what. Sit me down. Explain."

"If I had to."

Julian's laugh this time was sharper.

"You make it sound like an inconvenience."

"It is not."

"Then what is it."

Lucian's gaze softened, but only slightly. "Complicated."

Julian shook his head once.

"You think this is complicated."

"It is."

Julian's voice dropped lower.

"I touched you."

"Yes."

"I trusted you."

Lucian did not look away. "I know."

"And you stood there just now like it was nothing."

Lucian's tone remained steady. "It was not nothing."

Julian stepped closer again.

"Then what was it."

Lucian's eyes flicked briefly to Julian's hands.

"You were safe."

Julian felt his breath catch.

"That's what matters to you."

"Yes."

Julian searched his face for something else. Guilt. Shame. Fear.

There was none.

Only control.

"You're not afraid," Julian said.

"No."

"Of me."

"No."

"Of this."

"Why would i be" he said.

Julian's voice tightened. "You should be."

Lucian's expression shifted, almost imperceptibly.

"I am not afraid of you."

That was not the answer Julian expected.

The streetlight flickered once, then steadied.

"You think I'm going to run," Julian said.

"I think you're deciding."

Julian's chest rose and fell slowly.

"I don't even know what I'm deciding."

Lucian remained still.

Julian looked at his shoulder again, at the torn coat, the faint line where the blade had entered.

"You don't feel pain."

"I do."

"Not like that."

Lucian did not argue.

Julian's voice lowered further.

"What are you."

Lucian did not hesitate this time.

"I am not human."

Julian held his gaze.

"That's not enough."

Lucian did not look away.

"It will be."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"You expect me to accept that."

"I expect you to understand that nothing between us was false."

Julian felt something sharp move through him at that.

"That's not your decision."

"No."

"But it is true."

Julian stepped closer again. The space between them narrowed to almost nothing.

"You fed on me."

Lucian's eyes shifted slightly.

"No."

Julian's breath hitched.

"You didn't."

"No"

"Then what do you call this."

Lucian's gaze did not waver. "Control."

Julian stared at him.

"Over what."

"Myself."

Julian's pulse pounded in his ears.

"You're telling me you could have."

"Yes."

The honesty in that answer struck harder than anything else.

"And you didn't."

"No."

"Why."

Lucian held his gaze.

"Because I did not want to."

Julian searched his face for manipulation.

He found none.

"That's not reassuring."

"It is not meant to be."

Julian's thoughts shifted again.

Every time Lucian had leaned close. Every time his mouth had brushed skin. Every night that had felt charged and dangerous and addictive.

"You were holding back," Julian said quietly.

"Yes."

"From the first night."

"Yes."

Julian felt the weight of that.

"So everything I felt."

"Was real."

Julian's eyes flashed.

"You don't get to define that."

Lucian did not argue.

"I am not defining it," he said. "I am stating it."

Julian's breathing grew uneven.

"You should have told me."

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

"No."

Julian's voice dropped.

"Why."

Lucian watched him.

"Because you would have left."

Julian froze.

The answer landed differently than the others.

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

Julian's jaw clenched.

"You don't get to decide what I would have done."

Lucian stepped forward then.

One deliberate step.

The space between them vanished completely.

Julian did not step back.

The air felt colder, thinner.

"You would have walked away," Lucian said quietly.

Julian's heart pounded.

"You don't know me."

Lucian's eyes held his.

"I do."

Julian's hands were still stained with blood.

He did not wipe them away.

"You don't scare me," Julian said.

Lucian's expression remained neutral.

"I am not trying to."

"That makes it worse."

Lucian did not respond to that.

Julian looked at him, really looked at him.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same mouth that had moved over his skin.

But now there was something beneath it that he could not unsee.

"You stood in front of me," Julian said.

"Yes."

"You didn't hesitate."

"No."

"You knew you wouldn't die."

"Yes."

Julian swallowed.

"You let me believe you were fragile."

Lucian's gaze sharpened slightly.

"I never pretended to be fragile."

Julian's breath hitched again.

He realized something then.

Lucian had never played weak.

Never begged.

Never exposed anything that could not be controlled.

Julian had filled in the gaps himself.

"You watched me," Julian said quietly.

"Yes."

"From the beginning."

"Yes."

"And you still chose me."

"Yes."

The certainty in that answer was different from the others.

Julian felt something shift inside him.

Not relief.

Not comfort.

Something heavier.

"You don't even regret it," Julian said.

"No."

Lucian stepped closer again.

Just enough that Julian could feel the faint change in air between them.

Julian did not move.

He should have.

He knew he should have.

But he didn't.

Lucian's voice remained calm.

"I would do it again."

Julian's throat tightened.

"You don't get to decide that either."

Lucian's gaze did not break.

"I already have."

The streetlight hummed above them.

Cars passed.

The world remained ordinary.

Julian stood inches from something that was not human.

And he did not step away.
