Chapter 1 - "what if"

As she sank into the softness of her bed, the dim glow of her phone cast a gentle light on her face, illuminating the faintest hint of a pout. The pages of her favorite book had been dog-eared, the words blurred from countless readings. Ruyi had devoured every recommendation, scrolled through every book blog, and scratched through every online forum, yet nothing seemed to click. The endless scroll had left her feeling hollow, like a critic craving a masterpiece that didn't exist. With a defeated sigh, she let her phone slip onto the pillow, the screen flickering with a sea of unread titles, each one a promise unfulfilled. She closed her eyes, the silence of her cozy room a stark contrast to the chaos of her mind, where stories danced just out of reach, teasing her with whispers of "what if".

As the silence of her room deepened, Ruyi's eyelids snapped open, her mind litching on the idea of a apocalyptic world. Ugh, why did she have to think about that now? She was so comfy in bed, and the thought of surviving in a desolate world sounded like way too much work. Like, she'd have to actually get up and do stuff. Ew.

She flopped back onto her pillows, pulling the blanket over her head. Why bother, anyway? The world was probably fine. It wasn't like zombies were gonna show up at her doorstep... or was it? The thought made her peek out from under the blanket, half-expecting to see something lurking in the shadows.

Her mind started drifting... okay, if everything shut down, she'd need food. Canned goods, dried beans, rice... and seeds! She'd need seeds to grow her own stuff. But how would she make sure they grew? And water – she'd need a way to purify water. Boiling, maybe? Or those water purification tablets she'd seen online.

Hygiene was a big concern. Hand sanitizer, wet wipes... and she'd have to figure out some sort of makeshift shower. Ugh, gross. Entertainment... books! She'd need lots of books. And a way to light stuff – matches, lighters, candles.

Ruyi's thoughts swirled with the logistics of survival, but her eyelids grew heavy. Sustainability sounded like a lot of work. She closed her eyes, deciding she'd worry about it... tomorrow. Or maybe the day after. Yeah, she'd be ready .
