The growl shook the air and fear rushed through me at once. I stepped back without thinking, my heart beating so fast it hurt. I did not know what was going to happen next.
Before I could move any farther, he slipped his hand into mine. His fingers were warm and firm around my cold ones. When he turned to look at me, his eyes burned red. The color was deep and wild, and for a second I could not breathe.
Fear wrapped around my chest, even though I knew he would never hurt me. Knowing it did not stop my body from shaking.
"I won't hurt you," Azrael said softly. As he spoke, the red faded from his eyes until they returned to their normal grey. The calm in his voice was meant to steady me, but my heart was still racing.
"I know," I muttered under my breath, even though I was supposed to keep quiet. The words slipped out before I could stop them.
"Come, let's go inside. You are freezing up here," he said, guiding me gently.
