Chapter 6 - CHAPTER SIX.

The morning after their heart-to-heart, Julian and Sera sat at Julian's kitchen table, armed with notepads and pens, ready to map out their strategy. The air was thick with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. "Okay," Julian said, his voice businesslike, "let's start with the most pressing issue: how do we keep this a secret at VanceTech?" Sera nodded, her brow furrowed with concentration. "That's going to be tricky," she said. "Especially as I start to show." "We need a plan," Julian said. "A foolproof plan. We need to think about everything: wardrobe, schedule, excuses..." "Wardrobe is definitely a priority," Sera said, glancing down at her stomach. "I'm already starting to feel a little bloated. I need to start wearing looser clothing, maybe empire waist dresses or flowy tops." "Good idea," Julian said, jotting down notes. "We can go shopping this weekend. We'll find you a whole new wardrobe of pregnancy-friendly clothes." "And what about my schedule?" Sera asked. "I'm going to need to start going to doctor's appointments, and I'm probably going to be more tired than usual." "We'll figure it out," Julian said. "We can say you have a medical condition that requires regular checkups. We can be vague, but convincing." "And what about morning sickness?" Sera asked, her face etched with worry. "What if I start throwing up at work?" Julian grimaced. "That's a tough one," he said. "Maybe we can say you have a stomach bug? Or food poisoning?" "We need a consistent story," Sera said. "Something that we can both stick to, no matter what." "Okay," Julian said, tapping his pen against the table. "Let's brainstorm. What kind of medical condition would require regular checkups but wouldn't be too alarming?" They spent the next hour poring over possibilities, tossing around ideas and discarding them as quickly as they came. Finally, they settled on a plan: Sera would tell her colleagues that she had a minor thyroid condition that required regular monitoring.

It was vague enough to be believable, but specific enough to explain her absences and any potential mood swings or fatigue. "Okay," Julian said, summarizing their plan, "so you have a thyroid condition that requires regular checkups. You'll need to adjust your wardrobe to conceal your growing belly. And we'll both be prepared to cover for each other whenever necessary." "It sounds so... deceitful," Sera said, her voice filled with unease. "I hate lying to people." "I know," Julian said, taking her hand. "But it's necessary. We need to protect ourselves, and we need to protect our baby." He paused, his eyes searching hers. "Besides," he added, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "think of it as a game. We're spies, infiltrating the corporate world, keeping our secret safe from the enemy." Sera chuckled, a hint of amusement in her voice. "You always know how to make me smile," she said. "That's my job," Julian said, winking at her. "Now, let's move on to the next item on our agenda: our families." He knew that telling their families about the pregnancy would be even more challenging than keeping it a secret at work. But it was a necessary step. They couldn't keep this a secret forever. "Who do we tell first?" Julian asked. "Your parents? My parents? Marcus?" Sera hesitated for a moment, her brow furrowed with worry. "I think I should tell my parents first," she said. "They're going to be... surprised, to say the least." "Do you want me to be there with you?" Julian asked. Sera shook her head. "No," she said. "I think I need to do this on my own. But maybe you could talk to Marcus? He's always been a good sounding board for you." "Okay," Julian said. "I'll call him later today. But promise me, Sera, that you'll call me as soon as you've told your parents. I want to be there for you, no matter what." "I promise," Sera said, squeezing his hand. "And thank you, Julian. For everything." They sat in silence for a moment, their hands clasped tightly together, preparing themselves for the challenges that lay ahead. They knew that the road to parenthood would be long and difficult, but they were ready to face it together, one secret, one lie, one carefully crafted plan at a time.

Sera arrived at her parents' house with a knot of anxiety in her stomach. She loved her parents dearly, but they were traditional and conservative, and she knew that they wouldn't approve of her relationship with Julian, let alone her pregnancy. She took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. Her mother, Emily, answered the door, her face lighting up with a warm smile. "Sera, darling!" she said, pulling her daughter into a hug. "What a lovely surprise! Come in, come in. Your father's in the living room, watching the news." Sera followed her mother into the living room, where her father, Robert, was sitting in his favorite armchair, his eyes glued to the television screen. "Dad," Sera said, "I have something to tell you." Robert looked up from the television, his expression softening when he saw his daughter. "What is it, sweetheart?" he asked. "Is everything alright?" Sera hesitated for a moment, her heart pounding in her chest. "Mom, Dad," she said, her voice trembling, "I'm pregnant." The silence that followed was deafening. Emily's smile faded, and Robert's eyes widened in shock. "Pregnant?" Emily repeated, her voice incredulous. "You're pregnant? But... how? Who's the father?" Sera braced herself for the inevitable disapproval. "It's... complicated," she said. "The father is Julian Vance." Emily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Julian Vance?" she exclaimed. "But he's your boss! And he's so much older than you!" Robert remained silent, his face etched with disapproval. He had always been protective of Sera, and he didn't like the idea of her being involved with a man like Julian Vance. "Mom, Dad," Sera said, her voice pleading, "please, just listen to me. I know this isn't ideal, but I love Julian, and we're going to make it work." "But what about your career?" Emily asked, her voice filled with concern. "What will people say? This could ruin everything you've worked for." "I know," Sera said, her voice trembling. "But I'm willing to take that risk. This baby is important to me." Robert finally spoke, his voice stern and disapproving. "I don't like this, Sera," he said. "I don't like this at all. You're making a mistake. You're throwing your life away for a man who's not right for you." Sera's eyes filled with tears. "Dad, please," she said, "don't say that. I love Julian, and he loves me. We're going to be good parents." "I hope you're right," Robert said, his voice softening slightly. "But I'm still worried about you. I don't want to see you get hurt." Emily stepped forward, her expression softening as well. "We just want what's best for you, darling," she said, taking Sera's hand. "We want you to be happy." "I know," Sera said, squeezing her mother's hand. "And I will be. I promise. But I need your support. I need you to be there for me, no matter what." Emily and Robert exchanged a look, their expressions conveying a mixture of concern and love. Finally, Emily nodded. "We'll be there for you, Sera," she said. "We may not approve of your choices, but we'll always love you. And we'll always support you." Meanwhile, at a local bar, Julian was confiding in Marcus, his longtime friend and confidant. "So, you're telling me," Marcus said, his voice incredulous, "that you knocked up Sera? And you're planning to keep the baby?" Julian nodded, his expression serious. "That's right," he said. "It's... a lot to take in, I know. But we're committed to making it work." Marcus took a long sip of his beer, his brow furrowed with concern. "This is going to be a disaster, Julian," he said. "You know that, right? This could ruin your career, your reputation, everything you've worked for." "I know," Julian said. "But I love Sera, and I want to be a father. I'm willing to take that risk." "I know you are," he said. "You've always been a sucker for love. But you need to be careful, Julian. This situation is fraught with danger. You need to protect yourself, and you need to protect Sera." "I know," Julian said. "That's why we're keeping it a secret. We're not telling anyone at work, and we're only telling our closest family and friends." "Good," Marcus said. "That's smart. But you also need to be prepared for the worst. What if someone finds out? What if Damien starts digging around?" Julian's face darkened. "I've thought about that," he said. "I'm not going to let Damien ruin our lives. I'll do whatever it takes to protect Sera and our baby." Marcus looked at him, his eyes filled with concern. "I like how the OUR BABY SOUNDS, Just be careful, Julian," he said. "Don't let your emotions cloud your judgment. This is a dangerous game you're playing, and you need to be smart about it." "I will," Julian said, his voice filled with determination. "I promise. I'm not going to let anything happen to Sera or our baby." He raised his glass, his eyes locking with Marcus's. "To family," he said. "To love. And to surviving the secrets and lies." Marcus clinked his glass against Julian's, his expression a mixture of concern and support. "To family," he said. "To love. And to hoping you don't end up in jail."

The following weekend, Julian and Sera embarked on a shopping spree, determined to find the perfect pregnancy-concealing wardrobe. They hit all the maternity stores, browsing through racks of flowy dresses, empire waist tops, and stretchy pants. "This is actually kind of fun," Sera said, twirling in front of a mirror in a loose-fitting floral dress. "I feel like I'm playing dress-up." "You look beautiful," Julian said, his eyes filled with admiration. "But can you move comfortably in it? Can you sit down without feeling constricted?" Sera tested the dress, bending and stretching to ensure it was both stylish and practical. "Perfect," she said. "It's like wearing a cloud." They spent hours trying on clothes, carefully selecting pieces that were both flattering and functional. Julian insisted on buying Sera a pair of comfortable walking shoes, knowing that she would need them as her pregnancy progressed. "You're spoiling me," Sera said, laughing as Julian presented her with the shoes. "Only the best for my baby mama," Julian said, winking at her. Back at Julian's apartment, they laid out all their purchases, admiring their handiwork. "We look like we're preparing for a fashion show," Sera said, giggling. "We are," Julian said. "The 'Keeping the Pregnancy Secret' fashion show. And you, my dear, are the star." After their wardrobe makeover, they turned their attention to their cover story. They spent hours rehearsing their lines, practicing their expressions, and anticipating potential questions. "Okay," Julian said, "let's run through it one more time. You're at a meeting, and someone asks why you've been missing so much work lately. What do you say?" Sera took a deep breath and adopted a casual tone. "Oh, you know," she said, "just dealing with my pesky thyroid condition. It flares up every now and then, and I need to go in for checkups." "Good," Julian said. "But remember, don't over-explain. Keep it simple, keep it vague, and change the subject as quickly as possible." "Got it," Sera said. "Thyroid, checkup, change the subject." They continued to rehearse their cover story, refining their performance until they felt confident that they could pull it off. They knew that it wouldn't be easy, but they were determined to protect their secret, no matter what.

Damien had always been a keen observer, with a knack for noticing the subtle details that others missed. And lately, he had noticed a few things about Julian and Sera that didn't quite add up. He had seen them exchanging glances in meetings, lingering a little too long near each other's desks, and sharing hushed conversations in the hallway. He had also noticed that Sera had been missing more work than usual, and that she had started wearing looser clothing. At first, he dismissed it as coincidence. But the more he observed, the more suspicious he became. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was going on between Julian and Sera, something that they were trying to hide. One afternoon, Damien was working late in his office when he saw Julian and Sera leaving VanceTech together. They were walking close together, their heads bent in conversation, their body language suggesting a level of intimacy that went beyond professional courtesy. Damien watched them from his window, his eyes narrowed with suspicion. He couldn't hear what they were saying, but he could see the way they looked at each other, the way they touched each other's arms, the way they seemed to exist in their own little world. "Something's definitely going on," he muttered to himself. "I just need to figure out what it is." He decided to do some digging. He started by checking Sera's attendance records, noting the dates and times of her absences. He then cross-referenced those dates with Julian's calendar, looking for any patterns or coincidences. He also started asking around, casually inquiring about Sera's health and well-being. He learned that she had told some of her colleagues that she had a thyroid condition, but he couldn't shake the feeling that she was hiding something more. The more he investigated, the more convinced he became that Julian and Sera were having an affair. But he needed proof. He needed something concrete that he could use to expose them. He decided to step up his surveillance. He started following them after work, observing their movements, and listening in on their conversations whenever possible. He knew that he was taking a risk, but he was determined to uncover the truth, no matter what.
