Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4 — LESSONS IN THE RAIN

The morning fog hung low over the industrial district, mixing with the drizzle of a light, persistent rain. Mando tightened the straps on his worn jacket and stepped into the warehouse where Kael waited, already surveying the area with his usual silent intensity.

The space was enormous, abandoned long ago, with metal beams crisscrossing overhead and the cracked concrete floor littered with the debris of decades. The only sound was the soft drip of water from the broken roof.

KAEL Today is different.

Mando's eyes narrowed.

MANDO Different how? Another target drill?

Kael didn't answer immediately. He crouched, tapping a finger against the concrete.

KAEL The world isn't a warehouse. People aren't floating targets. Monsters don't move in predictable patterns. Every fight, every shot, every decision… it has consequences.

Mando swallowed.

MANDO Then what am I supposed to do?

Kael finally looked at him, his eyes sharp and unyielding.

KAEL You're going to learn awareness. Every environment, every opponent, every angle of attack matters. If you miss that, it doesn't matter how strong your weapon is.

Mando nodded, feeling the weight of Kael's words. He raised his gun, instinctively summoning it. The metallic hum filled the space, vibrating in his hands. The barrel adjusted as if anticipating his thoughts.

KAEL Not just a tool. Your weapon is an extension of yourself. Learn to see through it, not just shoot.

The first drill was deceptively simple: Mando had to navigate the warehouse while targets moved unpredictably and traps were activated by his proximity. Each bullet had to adapt not only to the targets but also to environmental variables, such as walls, beams, wet floors, and even puddles reflecting the light.

Mando fired. The bullets curved, ricocheted, and landed with precision. The gun shifted mid-air, changing calibers, shape, and trajectory in a fluid motion he could barely comprehend.

Kael nodded once, silently approving, then activated a new challenge:

Small mechanical drones that emitted blinding light

Miniature automatons that could fire tiny rounds capable of piercing Mando's protective barriers

The drones zipped through the beams overhead, their flight paths erratic.

Mando felt sweat slide down his forehead as he fired, adapting each shot in milliseconds. He didn't just hit the drones; he predicted their movement before they even appeared in his line of sight.

MANDO (thought) It's… like it knows what I'm thinking before I even decide.

Kael's voice cut through the hum.

KAEL It's not the gun. It's you. You just don't realize how much power you already have.

Hours passed. Rain turned to a light storm outside, hammering against broken windows and sending reflections dancing across the puddles on the floor. Mando's muscles ached, but the rush of growth kept him moving.

Kael finally stepped back, letting him catch his breath.

KAEL Enough for today.

Mando lowered his gun, chest heaving.

MANDO I… I don't even feel tired.

Kael's eyes were unreadable.

KAEL Because you haven't begun to understand. Strength isn't just stamina, it's awareness, strategy, and endurance. That comes later.

As night fell, Mando returned home, soaked and exhausted. The apartment was quiet, save for the soft hum of the city below. Aysh was there, arranging herbs and ingredients for dinner.

AYSH You've been out long. The rain… It's going to make you sick.

Mando shrugged, drying his hair with a towel.

MANDO I… needed to get stronger.

Aysh's gaze lingered on him, sharp, unreadable.

AYSH Stronger… for what?

Mando met her eyes. He didn't answer. He wasn't ready to tell her about Kael, the lessons, or the power awakening inside him.

She turned away, chopping vegetables with quiet precision.

AYSH (thought) He doesn't know… and I can't tell him. Not yet.

Her hands shook slightly as she worked. Outside, the city's neon lights reflected against the rain, and somewhere in the distance, a shadow moved, watching, waiting.

The night was calm, but the storm was coming. Mando's journey was only beginning.
