Rio's voice pulls me out of my head, and I look down to find him watching me, his brow furrowed in confusion. His small hand is resting on the arm of the chair, like he was about to reach for me.
I sigh, running my fingers through my hair-already tangled from pacing. "I'm sorry, baby. Mommy's just... a little on edge right now."
He nods, serious as can be. "Okay, Mom."
I must look ridiculous. Ten minutes of back-and-forth across the living room floor, my throat tight enough to make swallowing hard.
He's here. Lucian is in our house. Right now, he's in the bedroom, Uncle Albert tending to him-our neighbor who does rescue work for the barangay, who showed up with his first aid kit the second I called. Thank God he knows what he's doing.
