Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Escape from the DEAD ll

After Saeko entered the infirmary, everyone sat in tense silence, as if each person was trying to comprehend the situation surrounding them.

"Shizuka-san, where are your car keys? Can you take us to the city?"

Haru asked as he sat on one of the beds, while Sora sprawled quietly on his chest, leaning against him as if seeking safety amidst the chaos.

"Ah… They're in the staff room."

Shizuka thought for a moment before answering and added:

"All the teachers' car keys are there."

Although her car was small, it was more than enough to accommodate all five of them.

Haru murmured in a contemplative tone, focusing on the matter:

"I see… The staff room… So, we'll go there to get the car keys and leave. What about you?"

His question was specifically directed towards Saeko and Kazu, as they didn't have to accompany them if they wished to stay. As for Sora and Shizuka, it was clear they would go with them, especially since their destination was the same—they were going to check on their mother.

"Hmm… Although I don't have a personal reason to go to the city, I'll accompany you."

Saeko thought for a moment before answering, explaining her decision:

"The school is narrow and full of zombies, and supplies here are very limited compared to the city. It's better to head out with you now, rather than staying behind and trying to leave alone later."

"I'll come too…"

Kazu nodded firmly, his face filled with resolve. His family was waiting for him, and he couldn't die here before ensuring their safety.

Haru nodded calmly and finalized the decision:

"Alright… So it's decided. One last question: Has anyone felt their body is different or awakened to a supernatural ability like in anime or manga?"

His voice was quiet but charged with seriousness, as any additional ability could be the difference between survival or falling prey to zombies on the way to the city.

Haru wasn't narcissistic or arrogant enough to think he was the only one who had obtained a system or supernatural ability. Even if no one else in this room possessed similar powers, that didn't mean there weren't others in the wider world, or that what he possessed was entirely unique.

"I don't feel any real difference…"

Saeko fell silent for a moment, clenched her fist slightly, and continued with her usual coolness. She seemed to feel no change from the norm, as if her body hadn't gained any abnormal abilities.

"Me too…"

Kazu answered while adjusting his glasses lightly, his eyes turning towards Haru full of curiosity, as if trying to read beyond his mysterious abilities.

"I don't feel anything in particular…"

Shizuka said as well, trying to mimic some poses from anime she had watched before, but nothing happened.

Then came an unexpected surprise from Sora, who was sitting relaxed in Haru's lap:

"Actually… my body has become stronger. I feel like I could destroy the wall with one punch, but… I haven't tried it yet."

Everyone in the room froze upon hearing her words, truly astonished. They thought Haru was the only one hoping for a miracle in this incomprehensible hell, but what Sora said made them realize that supernatural abilities weren't just hope or fantasy, but tangible reality.

Then Haru added quietly but with clear confidence:

"Actually, I too… my body has become much stronger, and I have the ability to produce tentacles from my back to use in combat."

Haru didn't reveal the full details of his system, but he didn't intend to hide his supernatural abilities, especially since the system had tasked him with a Quest to kill 1,000 zombies, which would be impossible to complete quickly without using his superhuman power.

And as he spoke, a black, vein-pulsing red Kagune suddenly emerged from his back before the astonished eyes of everyone, forming a scene both terrifying and striking, like a frank declaration of the immense power Haru now possessed.

"I used this power earlier to protect Sora and escape with her here."

Haru said calmly while retracting the Kagune back into his back, as if temporarily hiding it from view. He added:

"As for why it appeared or what it is… I don't know either. But it's clearly related to what's happening in the world now. However, we don't have time now to test or explore it. Our current priority is to get out of here and ensure our families' safety."

Although curiosity gripped everyone, Haru's words were very logical. They didn't have the luxury, equipment, or experience needed to investigate this mystery systematically, so it was better to set the matter aside temporarily and leave verification for a later time.

"Shall we go now?"

Haru asked as he stood up, his eyes filled with anxiety and determination. His heart was focused on his mother, and his thoughts revolved around seeing her as soon as possible. He didn't hesitate to reveal his supernatural abilities because he knew that using them now would allow him to move faster, rather than waiting or worrying about needing to rely on other means that might slow him down.

It was clear that every moment of delay meant greater risk, and the decision was clear to him: move now, and protect his loved ones at any cost.

Upon hearing Haru's words, everyone quickly stood up, their features charged with resolve and determination. Their hands gripped their weapons tightly, ready to face any danger approaching them on the way out.

Saeko held her wooden sword firmly, every muscle in her arms tensed, reflecting her experience and skill in Kendo, ready to respond to any threat.

As for Kazu, he held the IV stand, its length adjusted so it wouldn't hinder his movement or slow him down, but he was ready to use it as an offensive or defensive tool as needed.

And Sora, who had been sitting quietly earlier, was now holding a red-headed iron fire axe—the same tool usually used to break glass on emergency buttons. Her grip was steady, her eyes focused on any potential zombie movement, ready to unleash her strength if necessary.

As for Shizuka, she was carrying a bag filled with medical supplies. As a certified doctor with no combat abilities, she made sure to keep medicines and her tools with her to treat them if anything happened.

The atmosphere was feverish and full of tension. Every person in the infirmary was ready to act quickly, fully aware that every second could be decisive between life and death in this chaotic world.

"Let's go," said Haru, taking the lead to exit, as the Kagune emerged from his back once again, ready to tear apart the zombies in their path.
