Claire and Leon emerged from the jagged gap in the train's hull, their boots crunching on the metal platform. The lift was still descending, a steady vibration thrumming through their legs. They backed against the cold steel of the carriage, scanning the swirling shadows that danced at the edges of the dim emergency lights.

A howl of pure, biological agony echoed from above.

They looked up. On the roof of the train, William Birkin was a silhouette of shifting horror. His body was a storm of hyper-active cell division—muscle tissue boiled beneath his skin like lava. With the sound of splintering bone and wet, tearing sinew, a brand-new, hairless head forced its way out of the mass on his right shoulder. It was a face of raw, eyeless brutality.

G2 Birkin had arrived.

"Fire!" Leon roared.

BANG!

The Desert Eagle's heavy slug slammed into Birkin's chest just as Claire's M79 let out a vengeful BOOM. The grenade struck the newborn head squarely, the explosion throwing the monster off the roof.

THUD.

G2 Birkin hit the metal platform with a force that shook the entire elevator. He flipped himself up, the four eyes on his two heads burning with a primal, bloodthirsty rage. He swung his massive, evolved claw, the bone-scythe carving a path through the air.

"Run!"

They dived in opposite directions.

SCREEECH—! The claw raked across the floor, leaving five deep furrows in the solid metal. Birkin became a blur of frantic violence, tearing through equipment and flattening steel railings as he pursued them.

Leon used his agility to weave between the massive pipes, shouting to draw the monster's focus. "Hey! Over here, you ugly freak!"

He peppered Birkin's legs with buckshot while Claire found her opening. From behind a support column, she leveled her launcher.

BOOM.

A grenade struck the center of Birkin's back, staggering him. They danced this lethal duet for minutes until Leon's foot caught a frayed cable. He hit the ground hard. Birkin loomed over him, the giant claw raised like a guillotine.

"Leon!" Claire screamed. She lunged forward and fired her last round directly at the monster's original head.

Birkin instinctively raised his mutated arm to shield himself.

BOOM—!

The explosion shredded the bony carapace of the giant claw, exposing the white marrow and raw muscle beneath. Birkin let out a shriek that rattled the rafters, his massive body finally giving way. He staggered, then collapsed backward into the dark, motionless.

Inside the train, Noah's world was a bubble of surgical focus.

The chaos outside was a distant thunder. His hands were as steady as if he were in a high-end clinic, not a plunging cargo lift. He used hemostats to clean Ada's wound, washing away the blood to reveal the deep, jagged tear.

Ada bit her lip until the color fled. Sweat matted her hair to her forehead, but she didn't let out a single sound. Looking at Noah—at the terrifyingly calm eyes behind his mask—she felt a rare, genuine sense of safety. He was a professional. He was a rock.

Noah worked with povidone-iodine and tweezers, prepping the area for the needle. The gunshots outside suddenly stopped, replaced by a heavy, final silence.

Leon stumbled through the breach, his chest heaving. He knelt by Ada, his heart visibly in his throat. "It's okay, Ada... I'm here. I've got you."

Ada leaned weakly into his chest, her icy guard finally melting under the warmth of his concern.

Noah didn't pause. He began the sutures, his movements precise and rapid. When the last stitch was tied, he crushed a fresh set of red and blue herbs in his palm and pressed the cool, medicinal poultice onto the wound. Ada's brow finally smoothed as the burning sting was replaced by a soothing, herbal chill.

Noah stood up, wiping his hands. He looked at Leon, who was still cradling the agent. "Stretch out your hand, Leon."

"Huh?"

Noah poured medical alcohol into Leon's palm and placed the dark, squeezed-dry herbal residue on top. "You feed it to her. It'll help the internal healing."

Leon looked at the clump of bitter-smelling mash. He looked at Ada, hesitant. But Ada sat up slightly, offering him a weak, gentle nod. Leon's heart did a backflip. He carefully brought the herbs to her lips.

Ada swallowed the bitter mixture without complaint, though she winced at the taste. Claire stepped in, handing over a bottle of lemonade. Leon held it to Ada's lips, the sweet citrus washing away the sting of the medicine.

"Thank you, Leon," Ada whispered, leaning back into his arms. "Thank you for being here."

Noah pulled off his mask and began packing his kit, catching Claire's eye. He gave Leon a secret "mission accomplished" thumbs-up behind his back, which Leon returned with a grin.

Noah sat down beside Claire, watching the two of them whisper in the corner. Claire was practically vibrating with the thrill of the romance, her eyes wide as she prepared to launch into a full commentary.

But Noah leaned in and kissed her, effectively blocking the "gossip" with a sudden, soft silence.

Claire's eyes widened, a flush creeping from her neck to her ears. Breathless, she pulled back and glanced toward the seat where Sherry was lying.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Sherry was awake. The little girl was lying on her side, her clear big eyes watching them with absolute focus. She looked weak, but her face was a picture of pure, childish confusion at the sight of the adults.
