"Only family members are allowed inside the building. Miss, please step back and don't interfere with our procedures." The officer pushed me back before I could say another word.
I nearly lost my footing. The ground felt unsteady for a second, but someone caught me from behind before I could fall.
"I'm Marcus, her son. Can I go up?" After steadying me, Marcus pulled out his identity card and held it out to the officer.
The officer glanced at it. "Mr. White, go ahead."
Marcus gave him a look that could have frozen the air between them, then took hold of my arm and pulled me inside without another word. We moved quickly through the lobby and into the elevator, and within minutes we were stepping out onto the top floor.
