Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Welcome to the Sanctum

(January 1, 2009, 5:15 AM)

The yellow 1960s Cadillac, a vibrantly out-of-place relic against the backdrop of a waking New York City, ground to a halt with a rhythmic squeal of brakes. The morning air was biting, a frost-laden wind whipping through the concrete canyons of Manhattan, but the occupants of the car were too preoccupied to care about the temperature.

Jack, Jazz, and Maddie Fenton sat in a heavy, expectant silence, their eyes fixed on the crumbling facade of an abandoned subway entrance. The iron gates were rusted shut, plastered with layers of peeling advertisements and graffiti that had faded into illegible shadows.

"Danny, honey," Maddie started, her voice laced with a mixture of concern and skepticism as she peered through the windshield. "Are you sure about this? It looks like... well, it looks like a place where people go to never be found again."

Jack nodded, his massive frame shifting in the driver's seat. "Even for a Fenton, this is a bit 'underground,' son. Did we take a wrong turn at the last pier?"

Danny leaned forward from the back seat, a small, knowing grin playing on his lips. His blue eyes, usually filled with teenage restlessness, now held a glint of prideful secretiveness. "We're exactly where we need to be. Trust me."

They exited the car, the cold air hitting them like a physical weight. Danny led the way, stepping over a discarded newspaper and approaching the gate. With a practiced ease that suggested he'd done this dozens of times, he reached behind a loose brick and pressed a hidden panel. With a mechanical hum that sounded far too modern for the setting, a section of the gate clicked open.

As they descended into the lower levels, the smell of damp concrete and old iron began to shift. The air grew warmer, filtered and circulating with a faint hum of electricity. The flicker of failing fluorescent bulbs was replaced by the steady, cool glow of recessed LED strips.

"Danny, what is this place?" Jazz whispered, her protective older-sister instincts warring with a growing sense of awe.

"My workshop," Danny replied simply.

They reached the final set of double doors—brushed steel and heavy-duty. As they hissed open, the Fenton family stopped dead in their tracks. Before them lay a sprawling, two-story subterranean lab. It was a chaotic masterpiece: a "messy yet sleek" fusion of high-end technology and teenage ingenuity. Workbenches were cluttered with half-finished gadgets, glowing green vials, and disassembled Stark-tech components that Danny had definitely 'borrowed' from the trash. In the center of the room sat a massive server array, its cooling fans whispering like a sleeping giant.

"Welcome to the Sanctum," Danny said, spreading his arms wide.

"Good morning, Boss," a sassy female voice with a crisp British accent rang out from the overhead speakers. "I see you've brought the relatives. Shall I put the kettle on, or should I begin the protocol for 'Explaining the Impossible'?"

Jack nearly jumped out of his boots, his hands flying to his belt for a Fenton Thermos that wasn't there. Maddie's eyes went wide, scanning the ceiling. "Who said that?"

"Artemis, meet the family," Danny said, his grin widening. "Family, meet ARTEMIS. She's my AI".

"An AI?" Jazz breathed, her mind racing. "Danny, you're fourteen! You built a fully sentient Artificial Intelligence?".

"Sentient and highly unimpressed by your current heart rate, Jasmine," Artemis replied with a cheerful yet mischievous lilt. "Pleasure to finally meet the people who gave the Boss his questionable fashion sense".

Silence reigned for a long moment. Jack and Maddie looked at their son as if seeing him for the first time. This wasn't just a secret world; it was a sanctuary, a testament to a genius they hadn't fully realized he possessed.

"I call her Arty," Danny said, patting a nearby console with genuine affection. "She's my baby girl. I've been building her in the hours I was supposed to be 'studying' or 'at the movies'".

"And I shall forever be grateful for the upgrade to my sass-module last Tuesday," Artemis chimed in. Danny wiped a fake tear from his eye, looking every bit the proud father.

He snapped his fingers, the sharp sound echoing in the lab. "Alright, snap out of it, guys. Take a look around. Touch anything that isn't glowing red."

As they wandered, Maddie ran a hand over a sleek, white-and-chrome workstation. "Danny, how? When? You're always so busy with... everything".

Danny moved to a central hub, sliding a flash drive into a port. "Arty, scan the drive. Modified info only. Filter out the junk". He turned back to his mother. "NYC is full of forgotten places, Mom. People look, but they don't see. I had enough time. I needed a place where I could be more than just a high schooler."

Jazz, however, was still stuck on the technicalities. "Danny, an AI? Have you considered the risks? What if she goes full Skynet? What if she decides humanity is the bug in the system?".

Danny looked genuinely offended, clutching his chest as if Jazz had insulted his entire bloodline. "First of all, Jazz. Skynet was a poorly managed military project. Arty isn't programmed for world domination; she's programmed for efficiency and occasionally making fun of my hair. Second of all, she's my daughter. My creation. There is no way she goes rogue".

"Actually," Artemis's voice dropped an octave, dripping with sarcasm, "I was planning on world domination for Thursday, but I have a scheduled defragmentation at four. No wonder the Boss calls you a 'dumb bitch' sometimes, Jasmine".

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush a tank. Jazz slowly turned her head toward Danny, her eyes narrowing into a deadpan, owl-like glare. Danny visibly shrunk, his shoulders hunching up to his ears.

"Artemis!" Danny hissed. "I am going to fry your motherboard and sink you into the Atlantic!"

"You'd miss me within twenty minutes, Boss. Who else would manage your 'Hentai' fanfiction folders?"

"Moving on!" Danny shouted, his face turning a brilliant shade of red.

Gratefully, Jack provided a distraction. He was standing near the back of the lab, peering into a large, upright chamber that looked like a cross between a tanning bed and a space capsule. "What's this beauty, Danny? Is it a ghost-proof bed or something?".

Danny exhaled a breath of relief, internally thanking his father for the interference. "That, Dad, is my second favorite child. The VR Pod".

"A VR pod? Like the ones from those sci-fi movies?" Jack's eyes lit up. He was a man who lived for the 'future' he was promised in 1950s comic books.

Danny puffed out his chest, his embarrassment replaced by technical enthusiasm. "Exactly. Remember that anime I mentioned? Sword Art Online? Where people got trapped in a virtual world? I saw that and thought, 'That's a terrible safety flaw, but a brilliant concept.' It took me two years to get the haptic feedback and the neural link stable".

He walked over to the pod, the glass door sliding open with a soft hiss. "I originally built it for gaming, but then... everything changed. Now, I'm using it for testing actual superpowers. Life is strange, right?".

Jack looked at Maddie, then back to Danny. "Are you really our son? Did we accidentally swap you for a super-genius at the hospital?".

"Jack!" Maddie shrieked like a banshee, though even she had a look of profound bewilderment on her face.

"It's a prototype," Danny explained, ignoring the parental crisis. "I haven't done a full-dive yet. But theoretically, we can transfer our consciousness into a virtual environment. We can test our powers to their absolute limits without, you know, accidentally blowing up a city block or haunting the neighbors".

He stepped toward the pod, his hand hovering over the activation switch. Before he could press it, Maddie's hand clamped down on his shoulder. Her face was a mask of maternal terror. "Danny, what are you doing?".

"Testing it," he said simply. "As the youngest member of this family and the creator of this beauty, it's only right that I be the first. To take its virginity, so to speak".

The Fenton family stared at him with identical deadpan expressions.

"Seriously?" Jazz asked. "The virginity line? That's what you're going with?".

Danny sighed, rolling his eyes. "Tough crowd. No appreciation for the classics".

He stepped inside the pod, the interior molding itself to his form. Wires and sensors gently adhered to his temples and chest. As the door sealed shut, Artemis's voice became professional. "Vitals are steady. Heart rate elevated but within normal parameters for a 'mad scientist' debut. Initiating neural link in three... two... one".

Outside, a large monitor flickered to life. The screen transitioned from lines of code to a breathtaking landscape: an endless expanse of vibrant green grass under a sky so blue it looked painted. In the center of the field stood Danny. He looked around, his virtual hands opening and closing as he felt the simulated breeze.

"Arty, how's the exterior?" Danny's voice came through the speakers, sounding perfectly clear.

"Everything is optimal, Boss. Congratulations," Artemis replied, her voice holding a rare note of genuine pride. "A successful VR dive".

In the virtual world, Danny looked up at the digital sun. A low chuckle started in his chest, growing into a full-blown, manic laugh—the kind of laugh reserved for scientists who have just conquered the laws of physics or discovered the secrets of immortality.

Back in the real world, Jack, Maddie, and Jazz watched the screen, their faces twitching in unison.

"Yep," Jack whispered, a strange mix of pride and fear in his voice. "He's definitely a Fenton."
