Chapter 3 - The First Test

Elena arrived at Crosswell Corporation feeling a mixture of confidence and nerves. Today was the real test—the project Julian had assigned her. A high-profile client, tight deadlines, and zero room for mistakes.

"Morning, Ms. Brooks," Julian said, already reviewing reports at his desk. His eyes barely flicked up. "I've assigned you the Hargrave account. The client is demanding, precise, and unforgiving. I expect updates by noon."

Elena nodded. "Understood."

"You have resources. Use them wisely. And remember…" He leaned back slightly, gaze sharpening, "there's no room for error."

She swallowed, heart racing, but kept her voice steady. "I won't disappoint you."

The morning passed in a blur of calls, emails, and meetings. Elena coordinated her team efficiently, double-checking every detail. Julian observed from his office, occasionally leaning against the glass, silently assessing her progress.

By early afternoon, a sense of accomplishment washed over her. The project was on track. The client's preliminary approval came in, and Elena allowed herself a small smile.

"Not bad," Julian said when he stepped into the conference room. She hadn't even noticed him enter. "Efficient, precise… competent."

Elena blinked. That was it? Just "competent"?

"Thank you," she said anyway. "I appreciate the feedback."

He paused, letting her think he might say more, but then simply turned and left the room.

Of course, she thought. No praise, just evaluation.

Later, she heard whispers from colleagues—some impressed, some jealous. But Elena didn't care. She had survived her first real challenge under Julian Cross, and that quiet acknowledgment—though small—felt significant.

By the end of the day, Julian called her into his office.

"Your work today was solid," he said. "But tomorrow will be harder. The client wants a revised strategy by morning. Can you handle it?"

Elena met his gaze steadily. "I can. And I will."

A faint smile touched his lips, almost imperceptible. "Good. I like determination."

Elena left the office that evening, exhaustion creeping in, but her mind refused to settle. She replayed Julian's rare, approving glance over and over.

And for the first time, she admitted to herself: this job was going to test more than just her skills.

It was going to test her heart.
