Chapter 19 - Chapter Nineteen – The Way Home Felt Different

They were still talking about transitions between songs when she casually glanced at the clock on the wall.

Her smile paused.

"Wait… it's 8:10?"

He followed her gaze. "Already?"

She stepped back slightly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I should leave now. It's getting late."

He tried to sound normal. "Yeah… of course. Safety first."

There was a small silence. Not awkward. Just… reluctant.

She picked up her bag. "Thank you for the snacks."

He leaned against the table, arms crossed casually, but his eyes were softer than usual.

"You're thanking me like I invited a guest. You practically stole half the fruits."

She gasped dramatically. "Excuse me? You were the one forcing me to eat."

"I was making sure my dance partner doesn't faint mid-performance."

She smiled. "Oh, so you care about the performance?"

He tilted his head slightly. "And maybe the partner too."

Her heart skipped. She looked away quickly to hide the sudden warmth in her cheeks.

"I'll text you when I reach," she said quietly.

"You better."

She walked toward the door. He followed, not too close, not too far.

At the door she turned.

"Next time… we'll finalise the ending step."

He smirked. "Next time, I'm not becoming the girl."

She laughed. "We'll see."

And then she left.

The moment the door closed, she couldn't stop smiling.

As she stepped out into the evening air, a soft giggle escaped her. She pressed her lips together, but it was useless. Her heart felt light. Different.

On the way home, everything replayed in her mind—

The way he had watched her dance.

The way he leaned on the table while listening.

The way he said, "Maybe the partner too."

She walked a little slower than usual, almost hugging the memory to herself.

At home, while eating dinner, she zoned out.

Later, lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, she replayed the evening again and again. The laughter. The teasing. The comfort.

It was the first time she felt this—

that quiet happiness that doesn't need a reason.

That soft excitement in the chest.

That warmth that lingers long after goodbye.

She hugged her pillow slightly.

"Everything's fine now," she whispered to herself.

And for the first time in a long time… she slept with a smile still on her face.

The next morning, she woke up before her alarm.

For a few seconds, she just stared at the ceiling — and then the memories rushed back.

The dance.

The snacks.

His voice saying, "Maybe the partner too."

Her lips curved automatically.

She got ready with a softness in her movements, choosing her outfit carefully but pretending she wasn't.

"Why am I smiling this much?" she muttered to herself.

At the office, everything looked the same.

The same desks.

The same chatter.

The same routine.

And him.

He was already there, discussing something with the team. Calm. Focused. Professional.

For a second, her heart reacted.

But she walked in normally.

"Good morning," she said to everyone.

"Morning," he replied — just like always.

No extra tone. No hidden smile. Just normal.

And yet… something had shifted.

Later, when colleagues began discussing the upcoming activity and competition—

"So, practice going well?" someone asked casually.

She adjusted some files on her desk. "Yeah. It's fine."

"Only fine? You two are practicing a lot, right?" another teased.

She shrugged lightly. "We're just preparing like everyone else."

She didn't look at him.

He didn't look at her.

But both of them knew.

They stayed quiet. No inside jokes. No unnecessary eye contact. Just professionalism.

Because they both understood one thing—

The workplace had boundaries.

And whatever this was… it was delicate.

During lunch break, their eyes met for half a second across the room.

Not long enough for anyone to notice.

But long enough to say—

I remember yesterday.

He gave the tiniest nod.

She looked down quickly, hiding the smile that tried to escape.

Nothing special.

Everything normal.

And yet… between them… everything felt quietly special.
