Chapter Eight: The First Collision
The office was unusually tense that morning. A quiet tension that hummed like a live wire. Kai could feel it before he even stepped into the building.
Marcus was already at his desk, phone in hand, a faint crease between his brows. He glanced up as Kai entered, eyes sharp.
"Sir," Marcus said, low, "I've been looking into last night. Security shows your uh.... associate leaving the building late. Alone."
Kai's jaw tightened. "Did you see her?"
Marcus shook his head. "No… she wasn't with anyone at the cameras' angle. But I've been pulling logs, cross-checking elevators and badge entries."
Kai let out a slow breath. "Good. Keep it that way. No one can know she's… anything but your wife."
Marcus's gaze lingered. "Sir?"
"Nothing," Kai said sharply, spinning on his heel and walking toward his floor. He didn't need Marcus prying.
Meanwhile, Elena had arrived, careful, composed, perfect in appearance but nervous underneath. Every step in the polished lobby was measured. Every glance toward the elevators was deliberate.
Her husband wasn't with her today. That alone was a relief—but she still felt the weight of his shadow, the lingering fear of what a slip could cost her.
Kai spotted her the moment she stepped off the elevator. His chest tightened. She froze, seeing him at the same time.
For a second, nothing moved. The hum of the office faded. Her heart thudded, and his pulse caught mid-beat.
But the moment shattered when Marcus appeared, subtly blocking Kai's line of sight. Marcus's presence was calm, but sharp, like a hawk observing its prey.
Elena's lips pressed into a thin line. She couldn't run, and she couldn't stay too close.
Kai watched, tense. He had to act carefully. A single wrong move and everything would unravel.
Later, in a quiet corner of the building, Kai and Noah met, away from prying eyes.
Noah's curiosity was barely restrained. "So… you saw her today?"
Kai nodded, voice low. "She knows nothing. But I know who she is. The CEO's wife."
Noah whistled softly. "That complicates things."
"Complicates?" Kai's tone was dark. "It puts her in danger. Every moment she's around him, she's at risk. And I… I can't stop thinking about her."
Noah leaned against the wall, expression unreadable. "Then what? You stay out of sight until he notices? You keep chasing ghosts?"
Kai shook his head. "I protect her. That's all. Secretly. Carefully. And… I make sure she's safe. No matter what."
Meanwhile, in the CEO's office, the tension was rising. Marcus had presented the data, carefully phrased, leaving just enough ambiguity to ignite suspicion.
The CEO leaned back in his chair, eyes cold. "She was out last night. Alone?"
"According to logs, yes," Marcus said. "No one else appears on security. No cameras caught another person at her floor."
The CEO's jaw tightened. "Interesting."
Marcus paused. "There is one person worth noting… a low-profile employee who left the building around the same time. No confirmed connection. But....."
The CEO slammed a hand against the desk. "Find out everything about him. Tonight. Leave no stone unturned. If she has secrets, I want them. All of them."
Marcus nodded, already plotting, his mind ticking like a clock counting down.
Back in her apartment that evening, Elena sat by the window, staring out at the city lights. Every fiber of her being screamed for him, for Kai. Yet she knew tonight was dangerous. She couldn't risk being followed, discovered, exposed.
Her phone buzzed. A text....empty, but the sender unknown.
Her breath caught. Was it him? Could it be? Or had the CEO's net already started to tighten?
And somewhere across town, Kai felt it too. The pull. The memory of her skin, her laughter, the softness of her hands. He clenched his fists.
will not let anything hurt her. Not him. Not the world. Not even me.
The night had begun again. Shadows intertwined with desire and danger.
And tonight… the first real collision of secrets, obsessions, and hearts that were never meant to meet was about to unfold.
