"Let us give a round of applause to our honorable guest, who has been the highest bidder for all these exquisite items!" the auctioneer announced enthusiastically.
A wave of applause swept through the auction hall, though I suspected most of it was coming from people who were simply trying to hide their frustration.
After all, I had spent the entire evening outbidding them.
One item after another.
One ridiculous amount after another.
And, judging by the increasingly murderous glares directed at my side of the room, I had officially become everyone's least favorite person.
How unfortunate.
I raised my teacup and gave them a graceful little toast.
"Thank you. Thank you. Please, don't let my presence stop you from bidding."
My smile widened.
"Although, if you intend to bid against me, I suggest bringing a larger wallet."
Several people immediately looked away.
Oh, this was wonderful.
