Having finished the fish traps, the next step was to set them. The four of them began cleaning up around the stream bank. The remaining bait was wrapped in leaves by Asher Ryder and Wyatt, to be placed in the animal traps later. For the animal traps, it wasn't strictly necessary to stuff the bait into crab shells; just placing it on a leaf would do, since it wouldn't be washed away by the water anyway. But Ewan still told them to gather more crab shells: "Because they have a distinct scent, which will attract animals better than just the mashed meat."
Only then did the two Alphas pay close attention, and indeed, the smell on the crab shells was more pungent than the mashed meat. It was just that they had placed the two things next to each other initially, so they hadn't noticed. Thus, Asher Ryder bent down to pick up all the scattered crab shell fragments by the stream.
The group headed back to the lake area.
