Chapter 100 - Chapter 100: Morning whispers

The mansion was unusually quiet that morning. The sun had just begun to spill pale gold across the marble floors, stretching shadows along the hallways, but inside their room, the world felt smaller, warmer, and somehow safer.

Izana had returned only a day earlier, weary from days of tense negotiations, countermeasures, and constant vigilance. Yet now, kneeling beside her bed, he seemed completely present, utterly focused on her. His emerald eyes, unshielded by the usual blindfold, scanned her form carefully, noting every subtle tremor, every slight pallor, every whisper of unease that lingered from the past nights.

Leah sat propped against her pillows, wrapped in a thick blanket. Her hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and she shifted slightly as he adjusted her pillows with careful hands. The light brushed across his face, revealing the faint exhaustion in his sharp features, yet the intensity in his gaze remained unbroken.

"You've been awake," he said softly, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. His touch was tender, deliberate. "You should rest."

"I… I wanted to wait for you," Leah whispered, her voice hoarse but soft. She lifted her hands, pressing them lightly against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. "I… I was worried."

Izana's lips curved into the faintest, rarest smile. "And now I am here. You are safe. That is all that matters."

A silence settled between them, comfortable but charged with unspoken thoughts. Leah's hand drifted downward, brushing against the edge of the blanket and then, almost instinctively, against her abdomen. A nervous warmth spread across her chest.

"Izana…" she began, her voice hesitant, as if weighing each word. "Can I ask you something?"

He nodded, tilting his head slightly, his eyes softening. "Anything."

She hesitated, then looked at him directly. "Do you… ever think about having a child? One day?"

The question hung in the air, simple but profound. For a moment, Izana said nothing. His gaze drifted downward, past her eyes, as though considering the weight of her words. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, deliberate, and edged with something Leah rarely heard: fear.

"I… am afraid," he admitted quietly. "Afraid of having children. Afraid of passing this… this curse down to them. I could not bear for them to suffer as I have, or as you have."

Leah's eyes softened. She lifted her hand, placing it gently over his, feeling the warmth of his skin and the subtle tremor of tension beneath it. "I understand," she said softly. "But… maybe we can find a way. Maybe we can face it together. You wouldn't have to carry that fear alone."

His lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes flickering to hers. The faint smile that lingered only moments ago vanished as he allowed himself a quiet exhale. "I… I have never imagined… what it would mean to be a father. But if… if it were with you, I… I would not hesitate. I would not fear. But…" He looked away, voice dropping slightly. "I must always be cautious. Always vigilant. Always."

Leah's heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. She leaned closer, pressing her head lightly against his shoulder. "Even if the curse exists," she whispered, "I want a family with you. One day. If you want it too."

He closed his eyes briefly, letting the warmth of her presence seep in. He pressed a light kiss to the top of her head, lingering there, as though drawing courage from the quiet intimacy of the moment. "If it is with you… then perhaps I would dare," he murmured, almost to himself.

Leah smiled faintly, a small flicker of hope warming her chest. "We'll face it together," she said, quiet but certain. "Whatever happens, we'll figure it out."

The gentle glow of the morning light reflected across the room as Izana moved to adjust her blanket, tucking it carefully around her shoulders. Every motion was deliberate, protective, as if shielding her from more than just the chill of the air.

"You should eat something," he said softly, pulling the tray of breakfast closer. "Even a small bite. You need strength."

"I… I'm not very hungry," she murmured, still hesitant, her gaze dropping to the food.

"You need it," he said firmly but gently. "I insist." He watched her for a long moment, noting the slight tremor in her hands, the pallor of her skin. Finally, she nodded and took a few small bites, glancing up at him occasionally. His eyes never left her, never flicked away, as though willing her strength to return simply through attention and presence.

They ate in silence, broken only by the soft clink of utensils. When she had finished, Leah leaned back against her pillows again, sighing softly. "I… I feel better," she admitted. "Just… having you here."

"I'm here," Izana said simply, brushing a hand through her hair. "You will not face this alone. Not now. Not ever."

A quiet stillness settled between them, a rare moment of peace after days of tension and fear. Leah closed her eyes, leaning into the warmth of his chest. The soft rhythm of his heartbeat seemed to steady the chaos of her mind. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to exhale fully, to let the fear ebb away, even if only slightly.

In the quiet of her rest, she drifted into a light, fleeting sleep. In her dreams, the world felt bright and safe again. The little boy appeared once more, his wide eyes gentle but insistent.

"Leah," he said softly, stepping closer. "Remember… do not let him go."

"I… I don't understand," she whispered, her dream self clutching at her nightgown. "How… how can I…?"

"You will know," the boy said, smiling faintly. "You must be strong. He will need you, even if you cannot see why yet. Protect him… and your bond."

Leah awoke with a start, the echo of his words lingering in her mind. She blinked in the soft morning light, her hand drifting again to her abdomen. The warmth of Izana's presence beside her grounded her, yet the memory of the boy's warning made her pulse quicken.

"I… I don't understand," she whispered softly to herself. "…But I will… I will try."

Izana noticed her movement, gently brushing her hair back again. "Leah? Are you awake?" he asked quietly.

"I… yes," she murmured. "Just… dreaming."

He pressed a light kiss to her forehead, the warmth steady and comforting. "Dreams are only reminders," he said. "The reality is that I am here. You are safe."

Leah smiled faintly, leaning against him again. "I know," she whispered, voice soft but certain. "And… one day… we will have a family. I… I think I want that. With you."

He let the rare smile linger, rare but genuine, and brushed her hand over his chest. "Then we will face it," he said quietly. "Whatever comes, together."

Outside, the morning sun rose fully, brushing golden light across the mansion's corridors. Inside their room, the two of them shared a quiet, gentle bond — a moment of calm before the storm of challenges yet to come.

And for the first time in days, Leah felt the world slow, if only for a while, held together by the presence of him she loved — by Izana.
