Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Piano X and X Invisible Notes

Kisho walked forward slowly while thinking, and after reaching the intersection between the "orange" and "yellow" seas of flowers, he saw another pianist arranged by the venue playing the piano.

Kisho spent nearly five hours walking an entire circuit, touring the whole rainbow-colored sea of flowers.

Although there were sightseeing vehicles, they passed through the intersection area without any intention of stopping. Moreover, there were too many people here, so he could not rashly use Nen to greatly enhance his body and accelerate. He only used a very small portion to make his walking speed roughly the same as running, and only greatly accelerated in areas with fewer people.

By the way, he had figured out the use of his own "Song of the Four Seasons badge"—when it was inside the box before, it was stationary, so the sensation was not strong. But when he could move freely, his "Song of the Four Seasons badge" could provide him with about a fifty percent boost to his physical abilities. Even better, when he himself used it, there was no cooldown time. The only drawback was that after carrying the badge, Nen consumption was faster than usual.

If used continuously, with his current Nen, each enhancement could be used separately for about one hour; if all four were used together, it could last for about fifteen minutes. When all four were used together, his perception—such as hearing, smell, and vision—would also be enhanced.

...

After finishing the entire flower sea, Kisho found a deserted place and silently opened his book.

The first chapter of "The Fantasizing Musician" was titled "Song of the Four Seasons", followed by four pieces of sheet music. Further on should have been that incomplete movement, but that movement had disappeared, replaced by a name that felt ominous at a glance: "Sonata of Darkness (Misprinted Fragment) — Piano".

Following the table of contents were three movements. These three movements could not be connected together, and each contained between three to six blank sections.

Kisho thought,

"No wonder it's called a 'misprinted fragment'."

In addition, after Kisho placed his hand on "The Fantasizing Musician", he frowned. This piece gave him a very bad feeling, like his soul was being soaked in filthy water, or like seeing something extremely terrifying that left his mind somewhat abnormal.

"If one listens to this piece, or performs this piece, something extremely dreadful will happen."

After placing his hand on the book, he could also sense this kind of information. This feeling was very weak, almost negligible compared to the desperate craving to listen to it all after hearing just one section—even if listening once meant paying with one's life.

Kisho put the book away, then gathered Nen into his eyes and walked into the snow-white sea of flowers that supported a red mist. In the snow-white flower sea, he saw "marks" that could not be seen with the naked eye. Following the marks with his gaze, he raised his head, and at the intersection of the red rainbow and the yellow rainbow, he saw a faintly visible fragment of a staff.

At the moment he saw it, the hand holding "The Fantasizing Musician" in his pocket paused slightly.

"It's been recorded in the book." Kisho said silently in his heart. He did not want to waste any more time and directly used an accelerated running technique, running around the inner ring of the flower sea. This time, it only took one hour for Kisho to circle and view the entire flower sea, collecting six segments of sheet music.

Once again finding a deserted place, Kisho opened the book, but what surprised him was that those six segments of sheet music were not recorded as a complete movement. Instead, they were filled into the previous sections—within those three movements, certain missing blanks were supplemented.

However… the blanks were only reduced by three compared to before, which meant that among the movements seen in the flower sea, three segments were not included in the book.

"If that's the case," Kisho sat down cross-legged in the middle of the flower sea and began to think.

"The three missing segments should also have carriers serving as their main bodies, but they didn't appear in my book."

"The lap I just ran was a bit rushed. Actually, at that time I had already noticed that there were two pianists playing the same segment of a movement, but I didn't pay attention to it."

"So how is the assessment for 'special visitors' supposed to be carried out?"

Kisho lowered his head in thought.

"The simplest way would be to directly replay once what was heard from the pianists. But that can't distinguish Nen users from non–Nen users at all."

Kisho shook his head and rejected this possibility.

"If what they're looking for is Nen ability users?"

"First hypothesis: a Nen ability user, with nothing better to do, used 'Gyo' and saw the sheet music floating in the mixed-color rainbow, then copied it down and handed it to the pianist who seemed to be the only one connected to this assessment."

"Second hypothesis: if a musician noticed omissions while listening… every pianist is playing a flawed version. By listening a few more times, one could probably notice?"

"Based on this, one could proactively point out the missing parts; or proactively search for the missing parts, complete the movement, and then submit it to the pianist."

"Thinking this way, the person they want is either a musician who can hear the omissions, or a Nen ability user—or perhaps, neither of these can be missing."

"No matter what, let's first go observe a place where piano can be played. Also, what I've collected isn't complete."

"Mm…" Kisho stood up. With a direction already in mind, his body relaxed, and only then did he hear a "gurgle" sound and realize that he was hungry.

He had arrived here at eight in the morning, spent five hours investigating the first round, then spent another hour collecting sheet music. The current time should already be past two in the afternoon.

Kisho helplessly tapped his stomach.

"Let's go back to that red-orange rest area first—might as well find something to eat."
