Chapter 20 - To Fight Another Day

Jasper or at least what looked like him lunged at Damian leaving barely anytime to react, Damian managed to duck out of his path of destruction, as he moved to a side with a quick step a clawed arm swung down at him, threatening to tear his body apart as another lunged with rows of razor sharp teeth hoping to get a taste of his flesh.Damian raised his arm, holding his rifle up he quickly pushed it into the open mouth of the creature and fell backwards, a booming noise echoed as he was thrown backwards by his recoiling weapon, letting the momentum carry him he barely avoided the claw as he fell to the ground with a thud.

[You have Slain…]

Not paying attention to the voice as his back hit the floor he stared up as a needle like limb came down onto his head, barely managing to roll to the side he heard the floor splinter under the force of the strike as he activated his dormant ability, using this brief moment to stand he held the barrel of his rifle to the base of the strange creature's head he fired his second shot. The creature cried out in pain, failing to die from the initial strike but was now drowning in its own putrid blood, he watched as the form of Jasper ran through another of the horde, before colliding with and partially breaking through the wall.

Even when he was brainwashed by a vile creature, he was still inexperienced with his ability, maybe he could use this to his advantage he wondered, Damian didn't have another moment to spare as a pair of scyther like arms swiped through the air aiming towards him, stepping to avoid the attack he failed to get away as one of the scythes managed to cut across his torso, leaving a deep cut causing his crimson blood to spill out over the floor as he assessed the state of his wound he felt a deep burning sensation coming from the ghastly injury which was already festering.

Having no time to worry about that now he surveyed his enemies wondering how the creature had managed to find him, but all he saw was it and the other horrifying creatures randomly attacking at the air, not caring to avoid hitting each other in the process. This was dangerous, not being able to predict when or where an enemy would strike was already bad enough but the fact they were injuring each other in the process meant that Jasper wasn't safe either.

He raised his rifle and fired, breaking through the tough hide of a strange creature like that of a large leathery ant, the nearby creatures all started to swarm the beast as the voice announced another kill in his name, looking back he glanced at the wall and watched as Jasper was slowly rising to his feet, body swaying without even a single blemish on the blackened leather as its head turned to look into the crowd hoping to find his prey. He was sure that the kid was still in there like how Damian was, so he couldn't risk him getting too seriously injured, it was his duty as both a person and as a soldier to protect him, not to mention the boon of having someone else with abilities around would bring .

He spent a few moments, dodging the attacks which happen to be aimed his way before deciding on a plan, it was a stupid plan to say the least, and would likely end in his death but he saw no other choice, with over a dozen monsters surrounding him he had to try something, firing off one more shot on the far side of the swarm he waited for them to surround his newest victim, and after waiting for a few short moments he breathed out heavily as he made himself seen once again and aimed his rife at the Lesser Devourer.

He began desperate run forward, keeping his aim steady as he went, he would only have one shot at this, and his failure would seal both his and Jaspers fates forever, but he had little choice, as he ran forward he listened out as the steps coming from behind him grew louder with less time between each step as the smell and sound of an approaching storm hit his senses.

Running forward Damian looked at the Lesser Devourerer wondering for just a moment, he wondered about the type of Trial the person who had become this terrifying beast had to face, what had they done to deserve a fate like this, he did not have an answer and he surely wished to never find out. Turning on his heel his rifle was no longer facing towards the terrifying spider but instead at Jasper, taking in a sudden breath and hoping he was right he fired the last shot from his rifle into his leg.

The young man had no time to react, as the bullet his his leg he could feel the force of the strike push him off balance as it broke apart on contact, causing him to fall to the ground in a heap, he was tired so so tired and all he wished was to feast, to eat the things before him as his master wished of him. He saw the figure of a man quickly lean down next to him and pull something from his side, his trusty rifle thrown around his shoulder in a sash, a nasty festering wound cut deep across his abdomen with blood and puss seeping from its edges.

Suddenly a cold and painful sensation pierced into his neck, it was uncomfortable and still and yet the pain did not feel entirely physical, it was a strange sensation to say the least, as the moments passed he tried to stand but was forced into a bridal carry by the larger man. Jasper tried to fight against his grip but he simply didn't have the strength, even when the man began to run, it was a strange feeling, moving quickly yet not feeling any stronger, he guessed that he needed to move himself to make use of his strength.

He hungered for strength, those moments when he was running felt the best, as if a well of power was brought to life with each step only to be replaced by the next and then the next, his desires for strength burned deeply inside him, so deeply in fact he wondered why he would let himself be carried in such a humiliating way, being saved by the same guy twice was truly an embarrassment for him. He already owed Damian a great debt but now he owed him twice over, suddenly an invisible wall of glass in his mind shattered as reality came crashing down on him.

He found himself looking over the auditorium as they ran through its halls, Jasper didn't know exactly what had happened to him, it was all like a strange dream, he had been perfectly lucid the entire time and yet his mind was failing to comprehend what had happened, looking over Damian's shoulder he saw an angry horde chasing after them, he was surprised by how fast Damian could move, and suddenly a sensation burned inside his mind, almost instinctively he reached his hand out in front of Damian and caught something in his grip as they ran.

Pulling it close to his chest he was surprised to see Damian's supply bag in his grasp, how did he know to reach for it? But the strangeness didn't stop there, a burning feeling was emanating from his neck, reaching up with a lone hand he felt the appear and was shocked to feel the touch of what seemed to be a smouldering chain, which he followed with his eyes, seeing that it connected to Damian's side.

He also realised Damian was not losing speed, in fact he was getting faster with every step just like how he did, that didn't make any sense how could he do that, that was his ability, making him feel nervous he hurriedly checked his runes to see if he had somehow lost his ability, but instead he saw that he had gained a new attribute instead, reading it, it said.

[Enchained]

Attribute Description:

[Your soul is bound by a chain of desire]

The description was short and didn't offer any real details on what was happening, but that wasn't his main concern anymore, instead it was the fact that they were headed for the back wall of the auditorium at startling speed with no signs of slowing down. Ducking his head down Jasper prepared for impact as he was sure they would splatter once they made contact with the wall, however just before they did Damian turned his body to push against it with his shoulder, the brick and allow shuddered under the force of the collision but nothing was going to stop them and soon enough the sound of screeching metal and crumbling stone was behind them, as they managed to break out onto the street in a hail of metal shards and dust, running far, far away.
