Chapter 19 - Chapter 19

Happiness.

Humans want to be happy, like it's all there is to life. Well technically, humans pretty much just aspire for that. They would do anything to be happy. I have seen it, my fair share of stupid humans and honestly there was no specie I loathed more than humans.

They really didn't get it.

Balance

That is.

They didn't know that everything bordered on balance. There couldn't be happiness without sorrow. No love without hate. Everything comes in equal parts and measure.

I mean, everything was their fault though. Their very existence was a burden on some of us. If I am being honest, I wouldn't mind the extinction of the human race at this point. Matter of fact, I would even lend a hand to the promising race. But anyway, on a much lighter note I just need to keep the blood lings out of harm's way, and I would probably live to see another century.

Free, that is. Hopefully.

But then he showed up in this god forsaken little town I was at least beginning to tolerate. I didn't really feel it when he arrived in town but the moment his presence registered at the restaurant I was sold. His kind and mine were bound to despise and sense each other. We were two sides of the same coin after all.

I saw it, the moment he looked at me. The moment his eyes categorized me as an oddity. The moment he cater logged my existence.

I just had to make sure I stay as far away from his vicinity as possible. It's not the first time am encountering his kind but it's the first-time one's arrival has threatened my existence.

He was, and I could feel him in ways I have never another. It took everything within me to maintain the little control I had left. He was intense.

The aura he carried alone felt suffocating. But that wasn't my problem. He wasn't my problem. It was the scent he carried. That deep suffocating stench of pure darkness. He wasn't just a demon in human skin but something darker.

At first, I could smell him but couldn't pinpoint what was different about him.

Also, he felt like something old and ancient. That presence of sickening heaviness he wore like a second skin.

He already had the darkness before something else latched onto him.

He was a host.

But even the wolves couldn't smelt it on him and the alpha was his mate.

I realized it when he seemed to look at him with stars in his eyes.

I wanted to warn the alpha about his newfound happiness. That it would not last, and that he couldn't tame the darkness. I didn't really care much for the wolves, but this is the only place that had accepted me in a century. And that alpha had accepted me into his territory despite me not having a scent.

He didn't trust me, but he allowed me to exist within this place. And in a way, I felt compelled to repay the favor.

I needed to warn Matt or leave this stupid town altogether. I couldn't fight the demons, but I could lend a helping hand. All I had to do was stay far away from him and not try to arouse his curiosity. I knew he was probably busy or finding amusement somewhere, but it probably wouldn't be long before he remembered the oddity he met and seeks me out.

"But I cannot leave..." I thought out loud while I sat on the highest point of a hill facing the little town.

My role as protector would not allow me to set foot outside this place until the curse lifts. A long, long time ago while I dwelt in the realm above this one, I had done something very stupid and got myself not only cast out but cursed as well.

I was an angel-human hybrid. And while my angel parent was cast down for lusting after a human, I as their foolish product was after a while cursed into a different fate. And no, it wasn't God that cursed me but someone else.

My fate I believed at first was to live for eons of years suffering the same fate over and over again. But no, my fate came from my mother. See I was an angry child. No major reason really. I just believed humans were beneath me and that I was better than all the blood lings that crawled the earth.

I, in my early years of life abused and tortured humans for my own amusement till my mother couldn't take it anymore and prayed to her God to set me right and by default my father couldn't handle the pain of his beloved and so he saw it fit to curse me to happiness.

I was to live my life happy, to help the humans until, my sins were attorned for, and I was granted forgiveness and set free by the pain of my victims.

That had been a millennia ago if I recall properly.

Yeah, my life was a joke. Literally.

I was physically unable to frown or be sad. I could feel my own emotions separate from the curse, and I hated every single one of them.

But I still maintained that ever smiling face, even in the shadows when no one was looking, I was just so damn HAPPY.
