Chapter 10 - Moments of Truth

The wind was cool, brushing gently against their faces as they walked slowly through the quiet streets. Ice felt her hands loosen, the tension of the day fading with every step. Bern walked beside her, relaxed and natural, as if being next to her was the most ordinary thing in the world.

"So…," Ice began after a moment, glancing sideways at him, "I feel like we barely know anything about each other."

Bern raised an eyebrow, a small amused smile tugging at his lips.

"That's true. But honestly… I like it that way. Discovering someone bit by bit makes it more interesting."

Ice smiled, appreciating his approach. No rush, no pretenses, just mutual curiosity.

"Okay… then I'll be honest. I don't even know what you do when you're not responding to emergencies."

Bern chuckled softly.

"Well… you already know I'm a firefighter. But when I'm not saving lives… I do… normal things. I tinker a bit, go for a run sometimes, watch movies. Nothing spectacular."

Ice tilted her head, intrigued.

"That surprises me… not that you do ordinary things, but… you. I didn't expect it. I mean… you have this energy, but you're… simple at the same time. It's like… everyone sees you differently from who you really are."

Bern's smile softened, a faint blush on his cheeks.

"So that's it… you noticed something even I don't always notice."

They walked in silence for a moment, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Ice breathed in deeply, feeling herself relax.

"And you… you never told me your story. You seem like you've been through a lot."

Bern shrugged lightly.

"Some things… yes. But I'm not sure I'm ready to share them yet. Sometimes we keep things to ourselves… to protect ourselves."

Ice nodded, understanding perfectly.

"I know that feeling. I have my secrets too… and then… there's that other thing. That night."

Bern glanced at her, a half-smile playing on his lips.

"You mean… what happened?"

Ice nodded, cheeks flushing faintly.

"Yes… I… I think it was a mistake."

Bern raised an eyebrow, but his expression stayed soft.

"A mistake? You think so?"

"Yes…," she murmured, hesitating. "I… I was a little… out of control. It was the day I found out… that my boyfriend had cheated. I… I didn't mean for it to happen like that… and maybe I took advantage of the moment… it wasn't right."

Bern walked silently for a moment, then spoke gently:

"Ice… you don't need to feel guilty. It was… us. Not just you. And that doesn't erase what we are now."

Ice looked away, a shy smile on her lips.

"Easy for you to say…"

"Easy?" he said with a quiet laugh. "Maybe not… but I think it's the truth."

A subtle tension that had lingered between them began to dissipate. Their steps slowed, words coming more naturally now.

"So… what do you do for a living?" Ice asked, curious to divert the conversation to something neutral.

"I'm a firefighter," Bern said, shrugging as if it were obvious.

Ice blinked, surprised.

"A firefighter? Oh… so that's why you said you were there to drop someone off…"

"Exactly. You thought I was… a spy? Or a yoga instructor?"

"Uh… neither," she murmured, blushing faintly.

Bern laughed softly.

"No, just teasing. But yes, I save lives. A lot of stress, a bit of adrenaline… and sometimes, boring downtime between calls."

Ice smiled, fascinated by his frankness.

"And you… save lives too, but… differently."

He shrugged.

"Yeah, I suppose. We're both trying to make the world… a little safer, I guess."

Their conversation naturally drifted to daily routines, small victories, and unusual experiences. Ice shared a story from the hospital about a sudden emergency that had shaken her, and Bern recounted a fire incident where he had to improvise to rescue a child.

After a while, Bern glanced at her with a playful smirk.

"And you… never told me why you were so… bold that night."

Ice's heart raced, her cheeks burning.

"I… I don't know… it was impulsive. Stupid."

"Impulsive and stupid… or spontaneous and interesting?" he teased.

She blushed even more, unable to reply, but her smile betrayed that she enjoyed the playful tone.

They continued walking, sharing anecdotes, discussing professional experiences, and gradually revealing personal quirks. Ice discovered that Bern was thoughtful, attentive, yet surprisingly witty. Bern noticed subtle details about Ice: how she scrunched her brows when thinking, the way her eyes lit up when amused, even her small nervous gestures.

Then Bern paused, looking at her more seriously.

"Ice… I want to know who you really are. Not just that night, not just in emergencies… you."

A strange warmth ran through Ice. She drew a deep breath.

"I… I want to know you too."

They resumed walking, side by side. The city noise faded, replaced by the gentle breeze and the rhythm of their steps. For the first time in a long while, Ice felt she could truly be herself with someone who wanted to understand her for who she really was.

After a moment, curiosity sparked again, Ice ventured:

"So… do you ever think about life outside all this chaos? Firefighting, emergencies… do you have… hobbies, dreams?"

Bern smiled, thoughtful.

"I do. I like photography. Sometimes I just take my camera and wander the city, capturing small moments… the quiet parts of life people overlook. And music… I play guitar a little, mostly to relax."

Ice's eyes widened, intrigued.

"Really? I would never imagine that… you, playing guitar."

He laughed softly.

"Most wouldn't. But it's my way to slow down, to feel normal. What about you? Any hidden passions behind the hospital doors?"

Ice hesitated, then smiled shyly.

"I… write sometimes. Small stories, notes, whatever comes to mind. It's… private. Helps me process everything."

Bern nodded approvingly.

"That makes sense. Everyone needs a way to cope… to express themselves."

The conversation flowed naturally, punctuated by laughter, gentle teasing, and thoughtful silences. They were learning each other, layer by layer, and the mutual curiosity that had brought them together grew into a quiet connection—an understanding that this night was only the beginning of something more.

Finally, Bern stopped near a small park, looking at her with sincerity.

"Ice… I want more than a one-time encounter. I want to really discover you. All of you."

Ice felt her chest tighten, a mix of excitement and nervousness. She met his gaze steadily.

"I… I want that too, Bern. I want to know you as well."

As they continued walking through the park, under the soft glow of the streetlamps, it felt like the rest of the world had disappeared. Two people, curious, attentive, discovering each other slowly—but completely, truly.
