Chapter 31 - Ark & Neo- Spoken feelings

Ark was granted an audience at dawn.

The court expected defiance. Instead, he knelt—steady despite the wounds he carried, despite the truth now known.

The king listened in silence as everything was laid bare: the attack, the abduction, Neo's identity, the long shadow of the organization that had hunted her since childhood.

When Ark finished, the hall was quiet.

"You may remain," the king finally said. "Until you recover. Until this matter is settled."

Ark was awake when Neo returned.

Moonlight spilt through the tall windows, silvering the room and catching in her hair. She hesitated at the door, suddenly unsure, heart racing in a way no battlefield ever managed.

"You should be resting," he said again—but this time his voice was softer, almost nervous.

Neo walked to him anyway.

"I did," she replied. "But I couldn't sleep."

Ark watched her closely, as if memorizing her presence. When she stopped in front of him, neither moved. The silence stretched—heavy, fragile.

"I thought you were gone," Ark said quietly. "When they took you… I kept thinking I was too late. That I'd failed again."

Neo's chest tightened. She lifted her hand and placed it against his cheek, warm, grounding.

"You didn't," she said. "You always come."

That broke something in him.

Ark covered her hand with his own, pressing it there as if afraid she might pull away. "Neo… I don't know when it happened. Somewhere between fighting beside you and worrying whether you'd wake up again." His breath trembled. "But I love you. Not as duty. Not as fate. As you."

Neo's eyes widened, then softened.

She smiled—not the gentle smile she showed the world, but something raw and vulnerable. "I was afraid to say it first," she admitted. "You were already carrying so much. But every time I looked for safety… it was you."

She leaned forward, forehead resting against his.

"I love you too, Ark."

For a moment, they simply breathed together.

Then Ark kissed her.

It was slow, uncertain at first—like a question. Neo answered by stepping closer, hands gripping his robes, pulling him in. The kiss deepened, still tender, still careful, but filled with all the words they'd held back. When they parted, both were breathless, foreheads touching, smiles quiet and real.

Ark pulled her into an embrace, arms firm around her back. Neo closed her eyes, listening to his heartbeat, steady beneath her ear. She felt safe. Chosen.

They sat together on the edge of the bed later, shoulders touching, fingers entwined. Ark rested his head against hers, exhaustion finally catching up.

After a while, Neo spoke softly. "About what the king said… the engagement."

Ark lifted his head immediately. "I won't accept anything unless you want it. Title, crown, alliance—none of it matters if it cages you."

Neo turned to face him fully. "I don't want it because of politics," she said. "I want it because it's you. But only if we walk forward as equals. No orders. No sacrifices made alone."

Ark smiled—a rare, genuine smile.

"Then we decide together," he said. "Every step."

They sealed it with another kiss—gentler this time, full of promise.

Outside, the kingdom whispered of power and fate.

Inside, two people chose each other.
