Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: The Move She Didn’t Expect

The ocean was violent that night.

Waves crashed against the cliffs below Marcus's estate like the world was trying to tear it down.

Inside the mansion, everything looked calm.

Too calm.

Sophia sat at the long dining table across from Marcus. Silver plates. Expensive wine. Candlelight.

It looked romantic.

It felt like a negotiation.

"You're quiet," Marcus observed.

"I'm thinking," she replied.

"About Ethan?"

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcus's phone buzzed again.

This time, he didn't hide it.

He read the message.

His jaw hardened.

Interesting.

Sophia noticed the shift instantly.

"Something wrong?" she asked lightly.

Marcus looked up at her slowly.

"Your Ethan," he said softly, "is making mistakes."

Her heart skipped.

"What did he do?"

Marcus turned the phone toward her.

A news alert flashed across the screen.

BREAKING: Ethan Reed Linked to International Financial Manipulation

Her blood ran cold.

"No," she whispered.

Marcus watched her carefully.

"Oh yes," he said calmly. "Accounts frozen. Arrest warrant drafted. Several governments very interested."

Sophia stood abruptly.

"That's not possible."

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

"When men declare war," he said, "they should understand consequences."

She stared at him.

"You did this."

He tilted his head.

"Did I?"

Her breathing quickened.

Ethan wasn't reckless.

He was calculated.

Unless—

Unless this was deliberate.

Marcus continued watching her face.

"Would you like to know something?" he said quietly. "He contacted my board."

Sophia froze.

"And?" she asked slowly.

"And he offered them protection."

The room seemed to tilt.

Protection.

From Marcus.

Ethan wasn't just attacking.

He was replacing.

"You see," Marcus continued calmly, "your lover doesn't want to defeat me."

He leaned forward.

"He wants to become me."

Silence fell heavy between them.

Sophia's chest tightened.

No.

Ethan wouldn't—

Would he?

Miles away, Ethan stood inside an abandoned skyscraper.

City lights stretched below him.

Victor approached carefully.

"You understand what you just triggered?" Victor asked.

"Yes."

"They've issued a warrant."

"I know."

Victor stared at him.

"You handed them enough evidence to believe it."

Ethan finally turned.

"That was the point."

Victor's expression darkened.

"You're sacrificing your reputation."

Ethan's eyes were steady.

"I'm bait."

Victor exhaled slowly.

"You're gambling everything."

Ethan looked back out at the city.

"She walked into his house alone," he said quietly. "You think I won't do the same?"

Back at the estate, Sophia stormed toward the balcony, needing air.

Marcus followed at a distance.

"You're angry," he noted.

"You framed him."

Marcus laughed softly.

"I didn't need to."

She turned sharply. "What does that mean?"

He stepped closer.

"Ethan accessed restricted financial channels," he said calmly. "He moved assets through systems that triggered red flags."

Her stomach dropped.

He did that intentionally.

"You're lying," she whispered.

Marcus studied her.

"Call him," he said, handing her his phone.

She hesitated.

Then dialed.

It rang once.

He answered.

"Sophia."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"What did you do?" she demanded.

A pause.

"I moved pieces," he replied.

"You're being charged with international fraud!"

"I'm aware."

Her hands trembled.

"Why?"

Silence.

Then—

"Because he can't fight what he can't see," Ethan said quietly.

Marcus watched her closely.

"You promised me," she whispered into the phone. "You promised we wouldn't become them."

Ethan's voice softened.

"I'm not becoming him."

"You're destroying yourself."

"If that's what it takes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"You think I can live with that?"

Another silence.

Then:

"Can you live with me losing?"

The question hit harder than anything.

Sophia closed her eyes.

Marcus could hear only her side of the conversation.

But he understood enough.

When she lowered the phone slowly, Marcus spoke.

"He's desperate," Marcus said.

"No," she replied quietly.

"He's committed."

Marcus studied her expression carefully.

"You love dangerous men," he murmured.

She looked at him directly.

"I love men who would burn for me."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"And what if he burns the entire city instead?"

She didn't answer.

Because part of her wasn't sure anymore.

Hours later, news exploded again.

Ethan Reed Missing. Authorities Unable to Locate.

Victor turned off the screen.

"He disappeared," Victor muttered.

Across town, sirens screamed through empty streets.

Back on the balcony, Sophia stared at the horizon.

Marcus joined her silently.

"You see?" he said softly. "He chose chaos."

She shook her head slowly.

"No."

Marcus raised a brow.

"He chose sacrifice."

Marcus's gaze hardened.

"And what will you choose?"

Sophia turned toward him fully.

Her expression wasn't scared.

It wasn't broken.

It was resolved.

"I choose," she said quietly,

"the man who's willing to lose everything."

Marcus's eyes darkened.

Because for the first time—

He realized something terrifying.

Ethan wasn't trying to win the empire.

He was trying to collapse it.

And if he went down—

He planned to take Marcus with him.
