Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Man at the Door

No one moved.

Not Ethan.

Not Sophia.

Not even the guards outside.

Marcus's voice slid through the door again, calm as ever.

"You've upgraded security," he said. "I'm proud of you."

Sophia's hands trembled.

"He's playing with us," she whispered.

Ethan didn't answer. His gun stayed steady, aimed at the door.

"Open it," Marcus said lightly. "Or I start shooting the guards you hired to feel safe."

A muffled groan echoed from the hallway.

Sophia flinched.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

He opened the door.

Marcus Blackwood stood there in a tailored coat, spotless, composed — like he'd arrived for dinner instead of war.

Two guards lay unconscious behind him.

Alive.

But broken.

Marcus stepped inside without permission.

He looked around the penthouse slowly.

"Nice view," he said. "Temporary."

Ethan didn't lower the gun.

"Say what you came to say," he said coldly.

Marcus smiled faintly.

"I came to see my daughter."

Sophia's breath caught.

"You don't get to call me that," she said.

Marcus turned to her.

And for a split second…

Something human flickered in his eyes.

Then it vanished.

"You embarrassed me," he said quietly. "In front of the world."

"You threatened me," she shot back. "You threatened him."

Marcus glanced at Ethan like he was inspecting furniture.

"A necessary lesson," he replied. "She was always too emotional."

"I'm right here," Ethan said.

Marcus chuckled.

"Yes," he said. "And you're the infection."

The air sharpened.

Sophia stepped between them.

"Stop it," she said. "This ends tonight."

Marcus tilted his head.

"You think this is ending?"

He reached into his coat.

Ethan cocked the gun instantly.

Marcus pulled out…

A folder.

He tossed it onto the table.

Sophia opened it.

Her hands went numb.

Photos.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Evidence.

Enough to bury Ethan.

Illegally acquired assets.

Shell companies.

Deals that would look criminal to any court.

Sophia looked up slowly.

"This is fake," she whispered.

Marcus smiled.

"It doesn't have to be real," he said softly. "It only has to look real."

Ethan understood instantly.

Reputation assassination.

The kind you don't survive.

"You destroy him," Marcus said, eyes locked on Sophia, "or I release it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Cruel.

Sophia felt the world narrowing to one unbearable choice.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Choose," he said gently.

"Your lover… or his future."

Ethan's voice cut through the air.

"Sophia," he said firmly. "Don't."

She turned to him.

His eyes weren't afraid.

They were calm.

He already accepted the cost.

That hurt more than the threat.

Marcus waited.

Patient.

Certain.

Sophia's heart pounded so loud she couldn't hear anything else.

Then—

She reached for the folder.

And tore it in half.

The sound ripped through the room.

Marcus froze.

Ethan stared.

Sophia dropped the shredded papers at her father's feet.

"I choose," she said, voice shaking but unbroken,

"the man you'll never be."

The silence after that…

Was lethal.

Marcus's expression emptied.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

"You just signed his death sentence," he said quietly.

He turned and walked to the door.

No rush.

No threat.

Just certainty.

When it closed behind him, Sophia collapsed.

Ethan caught her before she hit the floor.

And for the first time since the war began…

They both understood.

This wasn't about winning anymore.

It was about survival.
