Sophia stood by the glass window of her office, staring at the city below.
Everything looked the same—buildings, traffic, people rushing through their lives.
Yet nothing felt the same anymore.
Ethan Reed now owned a part of her world.
And worse—he knew it.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number
Conference room. 10 minutes.
—E
Her jaw tightened.
He didn't ask.
He never did.
When Sophia entered the conference room, Ethan was already there—alone. No board members. No assistants.
Just him.
"You're late," he said calmly.
"You summoned me like an employee," she replied. "Not a partner."
Ethan closed the file in front of him. "Then stop acting like you still control the game."
Sophia walked closer. "What do you want, Ethan?"
He leaned back slightly, eyes unreadable. "Transparency."
She laughed bitterly. "From me? After everything?"
"Yes," he said. "Because lies built this mess. And I don't intend to live in one again."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, she spoke. "You think I left because I didn't care."
He didn't answer.
"I left," she continued, voice shaking, "because someone threatened to destroy you. Your career. Your family."
Ethan's eyes darkened.
"You expect me to believe that now?"
"I didn't want to risk it," she said. "So I became the villain instead."
He stood up slowly.
"You should've trusted me."
"And you should've listened," she snapped.
Their words hung heavy in the air.
"You crossed a line by coming here like this," Sophia added. "Using power to corner me."
Ethan stepped closer—too close.
"You crossed it first," he said quietly. "When you decided my life was yours to control."
Her breath hitched.
For a moment, it felt like the past was about to crash into the present.
Then Ethan stepped back.
"This isn't revenge," he said. "It's balance."
He picked up his jacket. "Get used to seeing me around, Sophia. This story isn't over."
As he walked out, Sophia sank into the chair.
Because deep down, she knew—
The most dangerous battles weren't fought in boardrooms.
They were fought between two people who still felt too much.
