My mother rolled her eyes dramatically, waving a hand dismissively in the air. "Oh please, did you care about us before spending a whole week with those terrifying men?"
I stood there, completely speechless. My mouth opened, closed, and opened again, but not a single intelligent word came out. I mean, how on earth was I supposed to defend myself? What could I possibly say to that?
Every excuse I'd rehearsed on the drive over evaporated the moment her eyes landed on me, sharp and knowing, as though she could already see straight through my skin. My mind scrambled through a dozen half-formed explanations, each one flimsier than the last, while my mother simply waited, arms crossed, patient as a cat watching a mouse that had nowhere left to run.
