Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Sanguine

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl inside the wooden shack.

Zack watched with helplessness and despair as he watched a silver glaive pierce through his shoulder.

The girl's smile was still apparent on her face making him realize that he had fallen into a trap.

As soon as the glaive pierced his shoulder and blood sprouted from the wound, the crimson glow in the girl's eye suddenly brightened.

Within a second she launched her legs at his left leg, causing him to buckle down and the same time she let go of her grip on the glaive as the right hand shot to grab Zack by the neck.

She brought him near her mouth, and her cherry red lips parted revealing two elongated canine teeth that stood out from the rest.

Without waiting time, her fangs sung into Zack's flesh at the neck as she savagely drink his blood.

Zack who was caught by surprise broke off from his stupor when the pain kicked in and started to try to escape the girl's grip.

But sadly his actions were futile.

Not only was the girl strong, holding him in vice locking grip, but by the second she drank his blood, he was loosing his strength.

After noticing the ineffective of his attempts, Zack then realized how screwed he was.

His eyes darted the room in panic trying to find a life saving straw that could save him.

As his eyes darted across the room, he soon noticed his corrupted double staring at him with a delighted smile.

The silent plea was apparent in his eyes, hoping that this almighty abomination could perhaps intervene.

But the moment he saw the smile on its face, he knew all hope was lost.

At the same he could already feel his consciousness seeping.

It wouldn't take long before he turned unconscious or worse dies.

'Damn it....' he thought slowly.

'So....this...is...how...l...will-

Before he could finish those thoughts, darkness enveloped his vision.

A few moments later his eyes opened to see the blurred sight of the roof of the wooden shack.

As he woke up he felt an excruciating pain originating from his neck.

His body felt weak like he had spent a few weeks being starved.

"What..the-"

Zack tried to stand up only to realize that his body didn't have the strength to lift him up.

He tried to roll over only to be stopped by a voice from his right.

"l wouldn't move if l were you"

Zack instantly recognize that voice which sounded similar to his but only containing a smug tone.

Turning to his side he saw his corrupted double floating in the air, staring at him with amusement.

"You... Zack was momentarily startled by seeing the annoying fellow.

"What happened to me?"

He asked in puzzlement.

From what he last remembered he had failed to attack the girl who he thought to be human but only ended up being a sanguine.

And he remembered falling into the devious trap set by the cunning after having lost his guard.

After that he had lost consciousness.

So he had expected to either die or wake up being in midst of having his blood drained.

But for some reason he wasn't in such a situation.

Not only was he not dead but the vampire sanguine was nowhere to be seen.

'Where the heck has that sanguine even come from and what kind of monster injured it?'

As far as Zack knew he had never met a sanguine on this island.

His interaction and knowledge of sanguines only came back in his world, where they had been one of the constant threats of humanity.

And when he arrived on this island he had never met such creatures before.

While in midst of his puzzlement, Zack suddenly heard a knock suddenly sound from the door which was somehow closed despite him having left it open.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

The sound echoed three times in succession.

Zack froze suddenly feeling terror fill his whole being.

His first thought was the dreadful island creatures of the night had finally discovered his wooden shack.

But that was before he had the female voice outside.

"Are you awake already?"

Zack's knitted his brows having realized that voice.

That was the same voice that yelled stop when he was about to thrust his bone sword at the voice's owner.

It belonged to the Sanguine.

Zack puzzlement coudn't get any worse.

First of all he had no idea how or what led the sanguine to go outside.

And he also coudn't understand why it was knocking.

"What's going on ?" he asked at his double even though he knew that he wasn't going to receive any reply.

And as expected his double just took every opportunity to make his life harder.

At the same time the voice outside, sounded again.

"Hey evil spirit is he awake yet?"

Zack's corrupted double laughed and spoke.

"As awake as he can be"

Zack only watched still reeling in confusion.

The female sanguine outside was silent for a moment before saying.

"Hey kid can you still talk?"

Zack took a moment to finally realize that she was talking to him.

He then replied with uncertainty, not sure why she was asking that.

'Does she want to finish what she started ' that was what he thought.

"Yes" his terse reply was barely audible due to his present dire state, but it wasn't a challenge for the female sanguine to hear it with her exceptional hearing.

"Good..good" repeated the sanguine trying to find the right words.

"Can you please permit me inside your home"

Those words suprised Zack, since it was the least he was expecting to hear from her.

After all earlier she had entered inside without being invited and also she had tried to kill him.

All if this didn't make any sense.

"l know we started off at the wrong foot but l believe we can cooperate of put aside our bad blood."

The sanguine's desperation was clear in its voice.

Zack who was stumped by those words finally pierced together the pieces of puzzles that were refusing to form in his mind.

"She can't enter he blurted out in surprise. "

And when he recalled his knowledge about the enchanted runes he carved on this shack he then understood why.

Zack had crafted the wooden shack and inscribed it with runes that had two purposes.

One was to conceale it from the countless abominations inhabiting this island.

The the other was to protect him.

Now since the vampire attacked him inside the shack, it must had triggered the protective enchantment of the runes, causing the shack to forcibly expell her .

That was also probably the reason why he was still alive.

As soon as he realized what happened Zack was finally able to calm his emotions.

He then revealed a relieved exhale as he proceeded to speak with the sanguine.

"Why should I help you?" After all you didn't attempt to kill me earlier "

As he spoke, he had already concluded internally not to offer any help to that murderous and cunning sanguine.

His words were just to here what the evil creature had to say.

'They is no amount of words that can convince me to save her." Thought Zack with determination.

The sanguine upon hearing his question was quiet for a moment before bursting into soft laughter as if he had said the most ridiculous thing.

"Why you ask" She said with amusement in her voice.

"Well there are countless reasons but l have two that you can never refuse"

"The first is that, you need my help in surviving just as much as l now need yours. And don't even try to deny it because I know that l sucked a large amount of blood from you, enough to leave you with no energy. l had been worried that you wouldn't have enough energy to talk but thank the Progenitor, you are still capable of speech. But movement is probably out of the question.

And let's face it how long do you think you can go like that. You are going to need food unless you want to starve to death. And we both know no one is going to help you.

That evil double of yours is strangely interested in your death than your survival.

So your only chance of survival lies with me."

After saying all that in one breath the sanguine then pause.

A second later it continued.

"Then the second reason is very simple."

"Its because l can help you escape this place. "
