Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

The standoff on the rooftop had reached a fever pitch.

Rin Kuga had executed a perfect tactical reversal, pinning Utaha Kasumigaoka against the weathered brick of the maintenance shed. The "Ice Queen" of Shuchiin, who only moments ago had been the one pressing the advantage, was now completely paralyzed. The sudden, overwhelming proximity of Rin's body—the scent of him, the sheer heat radiating from his frame—was a direct assault on her senses. It was the first time she had ever been held in such a vulnerable position by a man.

Blood rushed to Utaha's face, turning her cheeks a vivid, burning crimson. Her legendary composure, usually as sharp as a scalpel, had disintegrated into a mess of stammers and shallow breaths.

She hadn't anticipated this. The transfer student she had intended to toy with, the man she had planned to break, was looking at her with eyes that didn't belong to a high schooler. They were the eyes of a sovereign—predatory, heavy with a weight of authority that felt ancient. Her heart hammered against her ribs, the rhythm accelerating until it felt like it might burst.

If last night had planted the seeds of gratitude and a stubborn, competitive obsession over his "chubby girl" insult, this moment was the catalyst for something far more dangerous. Utaha felt a shift in her very soul. She couldn't look at him. She averted her gaze, her neck flushed, unable to meet the intensity of his expression. It was an alien sensation, a loss of control that both terrified and exhilarated her.

Rin watched the tremors in her frame with a faint, knowing smile. He recognized her beauty; he wasn't blind to the fact that she was a masterpiece of this world's design. But the spark of true romantic interest eluded him, even though he found Utaha very interesting. Perhaps it was because this academy was a localized "goddesses"—where every hallway seemed to hold a girl of Utaha's caliber. When the extraordinary becomes the baseline, even a queen starts to look like a commoner.

Still, the atmosphere was too perfect to waste. Rin leaned in, his right hand slowly rising toward her chin. He intended to deliver a lesson in humility, a final touch to ensure she wouldn't dare try to "hunt" him again.

Utaha tracked the movement of his hand out of the corner of her eye. Her body felt heavy, trapped in a stasis that she couldn't break.

"Don't... you can't..." she managed to whisper, her voice a fragile shadow of its usual self.

Her protest acted only as a catalyst. Instead of retreating, Rin's fingers moved with a deliberate, agonizing slowness, closing the distance to the soft skin of her jawline.

Left with no other defense, Utaha squeezed her eyes shut. She braced herself for the touch, for the inevitable conclusion of the tension he had built. She waited, her breath held, her mind a whirlwind of anticipation and shame.

The seconds ticked by. One. Two. Ten.

The touch never came.

Slowly, tentatively, Utaha peeled her eyes open. Rin was still there, but he had stopped inches away. He wasn't looking at her with desire; he was wearing a effortless smile that was far more devastating.

"I told you," Rin said, his voice light and airy, devoid of the earlier pressure. "I'm not into chubby girls. See you around, little sister."

He pulled his hand back and pushed off the wall in one fluid motion. Without a second glance, he turned his back on her and strolled toward the roof access door, his footsteps echoing a casual dismissal.

Utaha was left leaning against the brick, the sudden absence of his presence feeling like a vacuum. He had left her stranded on the rooftop, abandoned in the wind, exactly as he had the night before.

It took a full minute for the shock to wear off and for the humiliation to ferment into a volcanic rage.

"Gah! Damn you, Rin Kuga!" she shrieked at the empty sky, her composure finally snapping. She began to stomp her feet in a fit of pique, her fists hammering against her own black-clad thighs in sheer, unadulterated frustration. "How dare you toy with me like that! You... you arrogant, insufferable...!"

The "Ice Queen" was gone. In her place was a woman who had just been given a reason to start a war.
