Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Dragon eggs

By late afternoon the Bear Tribe had settled into an uneasy rhythm.

They had prepared for Ash's arrival. They had rehearsed composure. They had reinforced defenses and whispered reassurances to their mates.

They had not prepared for him to sit cross legged on cave furs while Luna draped silk over his shoulders and told him he cut fabric too aggressively.

The sight alone was enough to keep the younger warriors at a distance.

Ash had returned from the outer clearing carrying a tightly bound sack slung over one shoulder. He moved through the tribe with measured calm, eyes forward, posture steady. To the watching bears it looked as though he carried something precious. The scent rolling off him was thick with dragon heat and something faintly sweet beneath it.

None of them questioned it.

When he entered Luna's chamber and lowered the bundle to the floor, Theo and Alo watched closely.

"What is that," Alo asked.

"Something important," Ash replied.

He untied the sack.

Silk spilled out.

Soft, gleaming folds of fabric in pale cream, blush pink, and deep twilight blue. There were lighter cottons layered beneath, woven far finer than anything traded regularly through the mountains.

Luna's eyes widened like a cub spotting honey.

"You actually found proper fabric."

"You asked for it."

She pressed both hands into the silk and let out a soft, delighted sound. "It's perfect."

Theo crouched to touch it. His fingers dragged carefully over the surface. "This is softer than fur lining."

"It should be," Luna said. "Our babies deserve softness."

Alo gave Ash a long look. "You crossed territories for cloth."

Ash's mouth curved slightly. "Yes."

And that was the end of that.

Soon the Dragon King was seated on the floor with silk pooled around him while Luna directed him like a very small, very determined general.

"Smaller," she said, adjusting the width of a strip. "Their arms will be tiny."

"They will be dragons," Ash replied.

"They will be newborn dragons," she corrected.

He altered the cut.

Theo leaned back against the wall, arms folded, watching in disbelief. Alo paced once before settling beside Luna, unable to stay entirely uninvolved.

"You are enjoying this," Theo observed.

"I am," Luna admitted freely.

Her happiness was bright and uncomplicated. The kind that made the room warmer without effort.

As the tiny wraps and shirts began to take shape, Luna glanced toward the entrance of the chamber.

"Ash," she said quietly. "Come with me."

Theo straightened slightly.

Alo's eyes narrowed in curiosity. "Where."

Luna smiled faintly. "To get something."

Ash rose without question.

Theo moved as if to follow, but Ash lifted a hand once. Not forceful. Simply clear.

"It will only take a moment," Ash said.

Theo held his gaze.

Then he nodded once and stayed where he was.

Luna slipped into the small side alcove carved deeper into the cave wall. Ash followed her inside. The space was dimmer there, lit only by reflected hearth glow.

When they were alone, Luna exhaled slowly.

Ash watched her carefully.

"You are ready to bring them out," he said.

"Yes."

He did not ask how.

He did not need to.

Luna closed her eyes briefly.

There was no dramatic display. No floating light. No spectacle.

She reached into her hidden space and withdrew what she had been protecting.

Ash stepped forward as the first egg settled into his arms.

Then the second.

Then the third.

They were heavy. Solid. Real.

Two were a soft, luminous pink with faint pearlescent sheen. The third was deep onyx black, veins of muted crimson tracing faintly beneath the shell.

Ash's expression changed completely.

He held them with reverence, careful and steady.

"You have guarded them well," he said quietly.

"They are strong," Luna replied.

"They are ours."

"Yes."

He shifted them carefully against his chest, balancing all three with ease.

To anyone watching from outside, it would look as though Ash had carried something extraordinary into the chamber with him from beyond the tribe's borders.

In a way, he had.

They stepped back into the main room together.

Theo froze.

Alo went completely still.

Ash carried the eggs as if they were carved from crystal.

Luna moved ahead of him, clearing space in the small room she had prepared earlier that day. Extra furs layered carefully. A cradle structure reinforced against the stone wall.

She turned and guided Ash closer.

"Here," she said softly.

He lowered himself to one knee and set the first pink egg into the nest of furs.

Then the second.

Then the onyx.

The room felt different instantly.

Theo approached slowly, as if approaching a sacred altar.

Alo exhaled a breath he had not realized he was holding.

"These are…" Theo began.

"Our dragons," Luna said simply.

Theo looked at Ash.

Ash did not look away from the eggs.

Alo crouched beside Luna. "You brought them."

"Yes," Ash replied.

His tone made it clear that no further explanation was required.

Luna knelt and touched the first pink shell gently. It was warm beneath her palm.

She leaned forward and kissed it.

Then the second.

Then the onyx.

"My girls," she whispered to the pink eggs.

"My son," she murmured to the dark one.

Theo stared at her.

"You know."

"Yes."

Alo shook his head slowly in awe. "Three."

"Yes."

Ash rested one hand lightly against Luna's lower back.

The cave seemed quieter now. The weight of the moment settling around them.

Theo finally spoke, his voice low. "They will be powerful."

"They will be loved," Luna replied.

Ash's gaze flicked to her.

"They will be both."

She smiled.

The silks still lay scattered across the floor. Tiny unfinished garments waiting.

Luna looked between the eggs and the fabric.

"We have more work," she declared.

Theo blinked.

Alo almost laughed. "You are serious."

"They cannot hatch without proper clothes waiting."

Ash actually huffed a quiet breath of amusement.

"You are relentless," he said.

"Of course."

She settled back down onto the furs and gestured for Ash to join her again. He did, positioning himself close enough that his thigh brushed hers.

Theo and Alo remained near the eggs, still studying them.

"They are beautiful," Theo admitted.

Alo nodded slowly. "The onyx one looks like you."

Ash's mouth curved slightly.

Luna beamed.

"I am so happy," she said suddenly.

All three males looked at her.

Her eyes were bright. Her cheeks flushed.

"You are all here," she continued. "You. Theo. Alo. The babies. The eggs. Everyone is safe."

Her hand rested over her stomach unconsciously.

"I wanted this," she said softly. "All of you together."

Theo stepped behind her and placed his hands carefully on her shoulders.

Alo moved to her other side, his fingers brushing lightly against her arm.

Ash leaned down and pressed his forehead briefly to her hair.

"You have it," he said.

Inside her mind, something stirred.

SPROUT.

The voice chimed brightly.

Helloooo Luna.

She smiled faintly.

Hello, Sprout.

Look at you. Collecting dragons and bears and silk like trophies.

I do not collect them, she replied inwardly.

No. They collect you.

Luna bit back a laugh.

Sprout's tone was openly pleased.

Everyone is here. All alliances secured. Protection levels optimal. Emotional bonds stable. You completed every objective beautifully.

A warm shimmer passed through her consciousness.

A birth pack materialized within her hidden space. She could feel its contents without seeing it. Clean cloths. Healing salves. Tonics. Strengthening draughts. Herbs to ease pain. Warm compress wraps.

A reward.

For completing your missions, Sprout said cheerfully.

Thank you.

You are very welcome.

There was a brief pause.

Then Sprout's voice shifted into something almost playful.

Also.

Luna's fingers tightened slightly in the silk she held.

Tonight.

Her breath hitched.

Tonight what.

Tonight you will give birth.

The words landed gently but firmly. Luna swallowed.

Not now.

No. Not now. You have hours. Enjoy them.

Her heart began to beat a little faster. Are you certain.

Very.

Sprout sounded delighted.

Everything is aligned. Your body is ready. Your mates are strong. Your environment is secure. Timing is perfect.

Luna inhaled slowly.

Outside her mind, Ash was watching her carefully "Your elsewhere," he said quietly.

She forced her breathing steady.

"I am fine."

Theo's hands tightened slightly on her shoulders.

Alo leaned closer. "What is it."

She looked at all three of them, She wanted to tell them.

She wanted to keep the softness of this moment just a little longer.

Instead she smiled.

"We should finish the clothes," she said.

Theo frowned faintly.

Alo studied her face.

Ash's eyes sharpened subtly "Why," Ash asked.

She met his gaze.

Because tonight everything changes.

But she did not say that aloud.

"Because," she replied lightly, "I want everything ready."

Ash held her gaze for a long second. Then he nodded once and reached for the silk again.

The eggs rested quietly in their nest.

The two pink shells seemed almost luminous in the low firelight.

The onyx one absorbed the glow like polished stone.

Theo crouched beside them, still unable to look away.

Alo touched one carefully with the back of his knuckles.

"They are warm," he murmured.

"They are alive," Luna said softly.

Another tightening rolled through her abdomen. Stronger this time.

Not enough to show.

Enough to remind.

Soon.

But not yet.

She kept sewing, she kept smiling.

And somewhere deep within her body, the first true shift toward night began.
