Chapter 3 - An Offer You Can’t Refuse

Shawn couldn't believe it.

'A book that says it's God?' he thought, his mind trying to process what he was seeing.

'The creator of the world? The creator of the universe?'

'What is someone that important doing talking to trash like me?'

Shawn shook his head.

'I'm definitely dreaming,' he thought. 'Or maybe I'm high. Yeah, that makes more sense.'

It was impossible for a deity of that level to contact him.

Unless…

'Is he bored?' Shawn thought. 'Or maybe it's another entity pretending to be him.'

Incredulous, Shawn coughed and picked up the book carefully.

"Can you hear me?" he asked aloud, his voice trembling slightly.

The content of the book changed.

[Yes]

Shawn felt a shiver.

He walked quickly to his room and opened his computer.

He searched the internet:

[Books that change content on their own]

Nothing.

[Magic Bibles that appear out of nowhere]

Nothing.

[Am I crazy?]

Unhelpful results.

Shawn closed the browser, frustrated.

'There's nothing like this…' he thought, looking at the book with suspicion.

He took a deep breath, deciding not to anger this entity after making it wait.

"What do you want from me?" Shawn asked aloud.

The content of the book changed.

[My son, you have the opportunity to redeem yourself if you choose to accept a job I have in mind for you]

Shawn's jaw dropped.

'A job God has prepared for me?' he thought, his heart starting to race.

'What the hell am I reading? Is this real?'

Shawn got up from his seat and started jumping around.

This couldn't be real…

To confirm if he was awake, Shawn slapped himself.

Slap! Slap!

"Ouch!" he yelled, rubbing his cheek.

But the pain was real.

'This is actually happening…' Shawn thought, excitement flooding through him.

'I'm going to go from a simple programmer job to working directly for God!'

'God! The guy who created everything!'

'How could I not accept something like that?'

But then, a rational part of him, remembering some of his father's teachings, stopped him.

'Wait,' Shawn thought. 'If God is making me the offer… I can probably negotiate the terms!'

Excited, Shawn leaned toward the book and shouted:

"What do you want me to do?!"

The book's content changed.

[I want you to be my messenger in another world and spread my word]

All of Shawn's excitement vanished.

'Messenger?' he thought, his enthusiasm fading away.

'Is God really asking me to become one of those annoying guys who go knocking door to door? What a crappy job! Even if it includes a trip to another world, that sounds absolutely horrible!'

But then, Shawn remembered something.

The book had mentioned that this job was a form of redemption.

Shawn coughed, clearing his throat.

"Uh… Father," he said, the word feeling strange in his mouth. "The job sounds… somewhat interesting, but… what do you mean by this being a kind of redemption?"

The book's content changed.

[Yes, I offer you this path, so that you do not go to Hell]
