Chapter 28 - old liu

The Tang family's convoy arrived at Old Liu's residence just before noon.

The traditional courtyard house stood quietly against the mountain backdrop, its wooden gates open wide as if welcoming old friends rather than guests. The air carried the faint scent of medicinal herbs and pine smoke.

Old Liu, leaning lightly on his cane, was already waiting in the courtyard.

Despite the paleness on his face, his back was straight, eyes sharp—still every bit the commander he had once been.

"Brother Liu," Grandpa Tang greeted first, stepping forward.

Old Liu smiled, genuine warmth breaking through his stern features. "You still walk faster than all of us old men combined."

The Tang family members followed one by one, offering greetings.

"How are you feeling now?""The doctors said you need proper rest.""You scared us this time."

Old Liu waved them off lightly. "Still breathing, still standing. That's enough."

Meilin stood quietly beside Grandpa Tang, her gaze lingering on the old commander. She bowed respectfully.

"Grandpa Liu. I'm glad you're recovering."

Old Liu looked at her carefully, then smiled with unmistakable affection. "Little Meilin… you've grown calmer. Stronger."

Tang Yuze stepped forward next, his tone respectful. "We're relieved you're safe, Commander Liu."

Old Liu nodded, then turned to his butler. "Have lunch prepared properly. We have guests today."

The butler bowed. "Yes, Commander."

Old Liu then gestured toward the inner rooms. "Yuze, Meilin—go rest for a while. The journey wasn't short. We'll eat once everything is ready."

Yuze didn't argue. "Thank you, Grandpa Liu."

Meilin followed him inside, Zimei padding quietly behind her, tail swaying lazily.

Time passed gently.

When the butler finally came to invite them, the dining table was already laid out with warm dishes—simple but hearty mountain cuisine.

Everyone took their seats.

The atmosphere during lunch was relaxed, filled with light conversation and occasional laughter. Old Liu spoke of past missions with Grandpa Tang, their words carrying weight but no bitterness—only shared history.

Midway through the meal, Tang Yuze suddenly leaned back and said casually, "Since we're here… how about we go hiking tomorrow morning?"

He glanced toward Meilin. "Just the two of us. The weather should be good."

Meilin paused for half a second, then nodded. "Sure. That sounds nice."

Yuze smiled, clearly satisfied.

After lunch, the elders stayed behind to continue their conversation.

Yuze excused himself first. "I'll rest a bit."

He headed toward his room without hesitation.

Meilin stepped outside instead.

The afternoon light had softened, the sun reflecting gently off the nearby river. The sound of flowing water carried a calming rhythm.

"Come on," she said softly.

Zimei wagged her tail immediately and followed as Meilin walked toward the riverside path.

The stones beneath her feet were smooth, worn down by time and water. The breeze lifted her hair slightly as she walked, her expression peaceful—yet distant.

The river flowed steadily beside her.

And for a brief moment, surrounded by nature and quiet, Meilin allowed herself to breathe.

Unaware that this calm would not last long.
