Chapter 16 - Meeting at Airport

Tang Meilin left the Aethria Medical Association only when the alarm on her phone rang sharply at five in the evening, slicing through her concentration like a blade.

The laboratory lights were still bright, the air filled with the faint sterile scent of reagents. On the transparent board beside her, dense notes were written in her neat handwriting—Component One, Component Two, Component Three—the last one circled again and again. She had been so close before. So close that sometimes, in moments of exhaustion, she felt as if the antidote was already breathing at the edge of her fingertips.

"Ms. Tang," Assistant Jin said softly, noticing the time. "Your alarm…"

Meilin exhaled slowly, straightened her gloves, and nodded."Yes. Pause everything exactly where it is. We'll continue tomorrow."

She removed her lab coat, her expression returning to its usual calm elegance, but there was a faint reluctance in her eyes—as if she hated leaving the battlefield when victory was almost in sight.

The black car moved smoothly through the evening traffic. Commander Yan sat in the driver's seat, steady and silent, while the city lights gradually stretched into long golden lines outside the window.

By the time they reached the airport, dusk had already settled. The glass walls reflected silhouettes of hurried travelers, announcements echoing softly overhead, the hum of rolling luggage blending into a constant background rhythm.

Meilin stood in the VIP arrival lounge, posture straight, hands loosely clasped in front of her. She was dressed simply—light-colored trousers, a fitted coat—but there was an unmistakable presence about her. Calm. Refined. Unshakable.

Then she saw him.

A tall figure stepped through the restricted passageway, fully covered—mask, sunglasses, cap pulled low. Beside him walked a man dragging luggage, chattering cheerfully as if exhaustion had never existed in his dictionary.

Yet the moment his gaze lifted—

"Meilin!"

The shout rang out, bright and unrestrained, completely destroying any attempt at low-key arrival.

Tang Yuze broke into a run.

Meilin froze for a fraction of a second—then smiled.

A genuine smile, one she rarely showed in public.

He reached her in seconds, arms wrapping around her before she could say a word. The hug was tight, careless, filled with the familiarity of childhood rather than the distance of years.

"You're finally back," she said softly, returning the embrace. "Second Brother."

For a heartbeat, the bustling airport seemed to fade.

In her mind flashed images from long ago—two children running barefoot across the Tang residence courtyard, laughter echoing as her mother watched from the veranda, gently scolding them for being too wild. Tang Yuze had always been like this—bright, loud, protective, dragging her along into mischief even when she preferred quiet corners.

Her chest tightened briefly.

She missed her mother.

"So many days," Tang Yuze said, pulling back just enough to look at her, eyes smiling even behind the glasses he had removed. "I'm finally seeing you again, Meilin. I thought I could come earlier, really. But filming dragged on, schedules were insane—"

"It's fine," she interrupted gently. "You're here now."

He laughed, relief and happiness spilling freely. "And I have one whole week of vacation. A miracle, right? I can finally stay with you. I'm so happy, Meilin."

She looked at him properly then.

Tang Yuze had grown into his looks beautifully—sharp brows, warm eyes, a confident aura polished by the spotlight yet not hardened by it. He was handsome in an effortless way, the kind that drew attention even when he tried not to.

For a moment, even Meilin found herself quietly mesmerized.

And yet—

Standing there, she was just as striking.

Her long hair fell smoothly down her back, catching the soft airport lights like flowing ink. Her features were delicate but resolute, elegance woven with strength. There was the unmistakable bearing of someone born into power yet refined by hardship. Standing beside Tang Yuze, she didn't fade—she matched him perfectly, like two complementary notes in the same melody.

Travelers passed by. Announcements continued. But around them lingered a pocket of warmth—siblings reunited, time briefly bending to allow them this moment.

"Come," she said at last, her voice light but affectionate. "Grandpa's been asking about you every day."

Tang Yuze grinned. "Then let's go home."

Side by side, they walked out of the airport, evening air brushing against them, carrying with it nostalgia, comfort, and the quiet promise that—no matter how complicated the world became—some bonds never broke.

Not even across lifetimes.

Just as Tang Meilin and Tang Yuze stepped out of the terminal, the cool night air brushing against their faces, a familiar, unwelcome voice cut through the moment.

"Well, well… isn't this Tang Meilin?"

Meilin's steps paused—not because she was surprised, but because she recognized the tone.

Her Huang yuxuan ,stepsister stood a short distance away, dressed impeccably, arms crossed, eyes fixed not on Meilin—but on the man beside her. Or rather, on the tall figure who had been close to her moments ago. The mask, the cap, the sunglasses—everything about him screamed suspicious intimacy to someone eager to assume.

The stepsister's lips curved into a thin, mocking smile.

"I didn't expect this," she said lightly, her voice dripping with deliberate sarcasm. "You just left Hua City, and already you've found yourself a boyfriend? Meilin, you move fast."

Her gaze flicked again toward Tang Yuze, sharp and assessing, as if trying to strip away his disguise with her eyes alone.

Meilin didn't even bother to look at her.

Her expression remained calm, almost indifferent, as though the words hadn't reached her at all. No explanation. No correction. No anger.

She simply reached out, took Tang Yuze's arm, and turned away.

"Second Brother," she said softly, "let's go."

The gesture was decisive—protective, unhesitating.

Tang Yuze felt it instantly. Though he hadn't heard the full exchange, the tension was obvious. His posture straightened, his easy smile fading into something cooler, sharper—but Meilin was already guiding him forward.

They walked past without a second glance.

The stepsister's smile stiffened, her fingers curling slightly at her side as she watched their backs retreat—composed, unbothered, untouchable.

Moments later, a large black luxury car rolled smoothly to a stop in front of them. The door opened promptly, impeccable timing revealing the efficiency of a system long accustomed to serving power.

Assistant Wen Jinyan stepped forward first, polite and professional."Miss Tang. Everything is ready."

Meilin nodded and guided Tang Yuze inside. The interior was spacious, quiet, insulated from the noise of the world outside. As the door closed, the airport lights and all unnecessary people were shut out with it.

Tang Yuze glanced at her, amused but curious."Someone unhappy back there?"

Meilin leaned back against the seat, her expression serene, eyes reflecting the passing city lights.

"Unimportant," she replied calmly.

The car moved forward, steady and silent—carrying them away, leaving behind only unreturned sarcasm and a woman who had just realized one thing very clearly:

Tang Meilin had never needed to explain herself to anyone.
