Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: The Leaning Tower of Konoha

Chapter 48: The Leaning Tower of Konoha

Konoha Village had a rather eventful afternoon.

The residents, going about their daily lives, were utterly baffled. For no apparent reason, the ground kept shaking. Not gentle tremors, but sharp, violent jolts that rattled dishes in cupboards and sent roof tiles skittering.

Boom… CRUMP… BOOM!

Deep, thunderous roars, as if from the belly of the earth itself, echoed intermittently. Despite the Anbu base being buried over ten meters underground, it couldn't contain the seismic shockwaves of the clash within.

As if in cosmic sympathy, the sky above Konoha darkened in an instant. Clouds boiled in, lightning flickered silently within them, and a heavy, oppressive atmosphere descended, promising a storm.

The village guards and every ninja on duty froze, their horrified gazes snapping toward the Hokage Tower. Inside his office, Sarutobi Hiruzen could only massage his temples and offer a weary, knowing smile.

Then, a connection seemed to snap into place. Every person in Konoha, shinobi and civilian alike, felt a sudden, inexplicable wave of primal panic. A terrifying, palpable sense of dread washed over the village.

For a moment, chaos reigned. People cried out, animals bolted, and the peaceful afternoon dissolved into pandemonium. Some of the more tightly-strung citizens were convinced the Second Great Shinobi World War had just erupted on their doorstep.

Down in the Anbu base, the spectators were beyond stunned. Their throats were dry, their minds struggling to process the scene unfolding before them.

"Come on! Use everything you have! Try to take me down!" Sakumo's voice rang out, laced not with arrogance, but with genuine, excited challenge.

However, one sharp-eyed Anbu operative, staring intently at Sakumo, suddenly fell deathly still. His face, behind his mask, drained of color as if he'd seen a ghost.

He was staring at Sakumo's right hand. At a single, thin line of scarlet beading from the heel of his palm, where the force of Shinra's last blow had rattled through the blade's guard.

The Commander… is bleeding?

The Anbu was shaken to his core. In all his years of service, through countless S-rank missions, he had never seen Hatake Sakumo shed blood in combat. And the kid, Shinra, had held the initiative from the start.

A foundational pillar of the operative's world view quietly crumbled.

"Alright. Then I won't hold back." Shinra's voice was a low rumble. The sound of his muscles and tendons flexing was like rolling thunder. An aura that seemed capable of shattering heaven and earth swelled from him once more.

He was exhilarated. His blood felt like it was boiling. This kind of all-out, life-engrossing battle brought an unprecedented clarity and vitality. It was as if a seal within him had been broken.

The next instant, a monstrous, overwhelming fighting spirit erupted from Shinra's body, dense enough to feel like a physical weight.

Sakumo's own battle-lust ignited in response. Chakra surged from him at full power, pouring into White Light. The chakra blade didn't just glow—it expanded, its luminous form swelling to more than five times its normal size, a giant's weapon of pure, condensed energy.

"What terrifying power…" Sakumo thought. He already knew, after that last punch, that Shinra's raw combat power had reached the pinnacle of the jounin rank. In terms of sheer destructive force, Shinra likely outclassed anyone in Konoha… except for himself.

But he had to see it. He had to witness the full extent of this young comet's brilliance. It was an obsession born from one genius recognizing another.

Shinra let out a guttural roar. His entire body seemed to chime in unison, and a faint, crimson steam—a visible manifestation of his boiling life-force and exertion—began to evaporate from his skin. The limits he'd been breaking day after day finally unleashed their cumulative potential.

"Captain… be careful!"

The warning given, Shinra's right leg pistonned downward.

Burst Step—Maximum Output!

KABOOOOOM!!!

The epicenter of Shinra's stomp didn't just crater—it vanished. A circular pit over ten meters across and several meters deep exploded into existence. The shockwave blasted outward, causing the surrounding reinforced stone walls to buckle and sheer away.

And in the next heartbeat, the entire half of the Anbu training grounds on Shinra's side of the line simply… disintegrated. The ceiling groaned, then collapsed in a cascade of massive stone blocks.

Sakumo was stunned.

The Anbu were dumbfounded.

The distant spectators were petrified.

What the hell is this?! Is this even human?!

Sakumo's eyes widened, his pupils reflecting only shock… and a dawning, brilliant light of understanding.

Through the cataclysm of dust and falling debris, Shinra shot forward. He was a ghost, a phantom of force, appearing directly in front of Sakumo as if he'd teleported.

"COLLAPSE!!!"

It was his ultimate technique. Originally designed to be launched as a projectile, Shinra had realized a truth: against an opponent like Sakumo, a slow-moving orb of destruction, no matter how powerful, would never hit its mark.

If it couldn't connect, its power was meaningless.

So, Shinra gambled. He condensed the "Collapse" not to throw it, but to hold it—to coat his fist with that unstable, world-ending energy and deliver it point-blank.

He was betting his newly-forged body could withstand the backlash for the single instant needed to strike.

Sakumo's pupils shrank to pinpricks. Faced with this new, impossible tier of speed, even the White Fang couldn't fully react. His eyes held only horror… and a torrent of internal, very creative cursing.

Shinra's smile was one of fierce, reckless certainty.

Sakumo's face hardened. His own right foot stamped down, and a sword intent so sharp it seemed it could cleave the sky in two erupted from him like a typhoon. There was no grand flourish.

The gleaming White Light, having gathered all his power and will, became the focal point. Its edge solidified into what looked like a line of pure, reality-severing light.

The next moment, heaven and earth seemed to lose all color.

One sword.

One fist.

They collided.

The world went silent.

Then—

The sky shattered.

Not the real sky, but the perception of it within that underground space. A light brighter than the sun, a polar day unleashed in the depths, exploded outward.

Time seemed to stop.

An eternity later, the blinding white faded. The dust settled. The surviving Anbu opened their eyes, feeling as if they'd witnessed the end of days.

Before them, Konoha's White Fang was on one knee. His short blade was driven deep into the ravaged ground, having scored a furrow over ten meters long before he'd managed to arrest his slide.

And behind him, to both sides…

There was open air.

The Anbu base had been pierced. The ten-plus meters of earth and reinforced concrete above were simply gone, vaporized or blasted aside. Two enormous, smooth-bored tunnels, each stretching more than a dozen meters into the distance with no end in sight, had been carved through the earth.

Through the gaping holes, everyone could see the Hokage Tower above… or rather, what was left of it. The foundational support on one side obliterated by the collapse of the substructure beneath it, the great tower now listed at a precarious, distinctly unnatural angle.

Pandemonium reigned above.

Today,

In the storied history of the Hidden Leaf Village,

A new, instantly iconic landmark was born from a single, shattering punch.

The Konoha Branch of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
