The romantic peace of the rooftop felt like a dream as Keifer and Jay-jay pulled up to the rusted gates of their old high school. The building was a skeleton of its former self, vines strangling the concrete walls and broken windows staring out like hollow eyes.
Before they could even step out of the car, a figure emerged from the thick fog near the entrance. Keifer's hand flew to his holster, but he paused when the light caught a flash of silver hair.
the light caught a flash of silver hair.
It was Seraphina. She looked disheveled, her expensive tactical jacket torn, and her breathing was ragged. In her hand, she clutched a shattered external drive.
"Keifer, Jay-jay... don't go in," she gasped, stumbling toward them.
"Seraphina? I thought you were at the secondary safe house," Jay-jay said, her eyes narrowing. "What happened to you?"
"The safe house was compromised five minutes after you left," Seraphina said, leaning against the car for support. She held up her tablet, the screen cracked but flickering with data. "I managed to intercept a direct transmission from the Elders' command center. They weren't just tracking us. They were receiving live audio from inside our circle."
Keifer grabbed the tablet, his eyes scanning the logs. "These are encrypted bursts. Originating from... a localized proximity sensor?"
"It's not just a sensor, Keifer," Seraphina whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and genuine hurt. "Look at the ID tag on the encryption key. It's a registered serial number from the Watson tech lab. Only five people had access to this specific prototype."
Jay-jay felt a cold pit form in her stomach. "Keifer, Felix, Edrix, me... and..."
"Josh," Seraphina finished
Jay-jay shook her head, her voice rising in denial. "No. Not Josh. He's the one who called the police at the pier! He's the one who's been handling our tech! He's been with us since day one!"
"That's exactly why he's the perfect mole, Jay-jay," Seraphina countered, pulling up a hidden file. "Look at the timestamps. Every time we made a move, Josh was 'monitoring the perimeter.' But the data shows he was actually uploading our GPS coordinates to a private server owned by the Elders."
Seraphina swiped the screen to reveal a series of messages. They were cold, transactional, and undeniably from Josh's private account.

Target has moved to the rooftop. The distraction at the alley is complete. Proceed with the Executioners. Ensure the Mutya is unharmed—she is the final key.
Jay-jay felt like she had been punched. Josh, the most soft-spoken and reliable member of Section E—the one who always had a joke ready when things got too dark—had sold them out.
"Why?" Jay-jay whispered, her voice breaking. "Why would he do this?"
"The Elders didn't just buy him, Jay," Seraphina said softly. "They've been holding his younger sister in a private medical facility in Switzerland for years. He didn't do it for money. He did it because they promised him her life."
Keifer looked at the darkened windows of the "Old Classroom" on the third floor. "If Josh is the traitor, then the message Toby left... the 'Key' under the floorboard..."
"It's not a key to a server," Keifer realized, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm tone. "It's a lure. Josh knew we'd listen to Toby. He probably helped the Elders 'fudge' the digital ghost to lead us exactly here."
Just as the realization hit, the old school's PA system crackled to life. Static filled the air, followed by a voice that was hauntingly familiar.
"I'm sorry, Jay-jay. I'm so sorry, King," Josh's voice echoed through the courtyard, sounding hollow and distorted. "But some debts are too heavy to carry. They're waiting for you in the classroom. If you don't go up... they'll stop her heart."
A single spotlight turned on in the third-floor window, illuminating a figure standing in the shadows of their old classroom.
Jay-jay looked at Keifer. The romantic vows they had made an hour ago were already being tested by the ultimate betrayal. One of their own had led them to the slaughterhouse.
"He's my brother," Jay-jay said, her eyes burning with a mix of tears and fury. "I'm going up there. Not for the key, but to bring him back."
