Chapter 61 - Chapter 61 — When Snow Fell Quietly

Multiple POV

Meiji 39 (1906)

Early Winter — First Snowfall

---

❄️ Chaos Arrives Softly

The first snow did not announce itself.

It simply… happened.

Kai noticed it mid-breath.

A single white fleck drifted past the wisteria branches and landed on his sleeve, melting instantly. He paused, eyes lifting.

"…Snow," he said.

That was all it took.

Mitsuri was at the door before anyone else. "SNOW?!"

She slid it open and rushed outside without shoes, arms spread wide, hair already catching white. "IT'S REALLY SNOWING!"

Shinobu followed more sensibly—coat on, expression unimpressed. "You'll catch a cold."

Kanae stepped out last, smiling as the flakes touched her hair. "It's beautiful."

Within seconds—

Chaos.

Mitsuri scooped snow with both hands, immediately dropping it. "It's cold!"

"You're holding snow," Shinobu said. "What did you expect?"

Mitsuri retaliated by tossing a clumsy snowball.

It hit Shinobu's shoulder.

Silence.

"…You chose violence," Shinobu said calmly.

Five minutes later, the yard was a battlefield.

Mitsuri laughing loudly, throwing too hard. Shinobu retaliating with terrifying accuracy. Kanae trying—and failing—to remain neutral.

Kai stood there, snow collecting on his hair, watching them with helpless amusement.

This, he thought, was chaos worth protecting.

❄️ Aftermath

They retreated indoors soaked, red-cheeked, and breathless.

Mrs. Kanroji took one look at them and sighed. "Towels. All of you."

Mrs. Kocho added, "And hot tea. Immediately."

Mitsuri sneezed.

Shinobu smirked. "I warned you."

Kanae laughed softly as she wrung out her sleeves. "Worth it."

Kai handed Mitsuri a towel. She took it—and didn't let go right away.

"…Thanks," she said, quieter now.

He nodded.

Snow continued to fall outside.

---

🗣️ Quiet — Almost

Later, when the house settled and the world outside turned white and hushed, Kai stepped onto the engawa.

The snow muffled everything.

Footsteps approached.

Mitsuri sat beside him, blanket wrapped around her shoulders, hair still damp. They didn't touch—but they were close enough that warmth carried.

"It's peaceful," she said.

"It is."

They watched the snow fall for a while.

"…Kai?" she asked.

"Yes?"

She hesitated. He could hear it in her breath.

"I used to think I was too much," Mitsuri said softly. "Too loud. Too strong. Too… strange."

He turned toward her fully now.

"And then," she continued, staring at her hands, "you never once looked at me like I was wrong."

Her voice wobbled, just slightly.

Kai's chest tightened.

"Mitsuri—"

She looked up.

Their eyes met.

Snowlight reflected in hers, pink and bright and vulnerable all at once.

For a heartbeat—

The world narrowed.

He almost reached for her hand.

Almost said something he wasn't ready to name.

"…Thank you," she finished quickly, smiling again. "For that."

The moment loosened—but didn't disappear.

Kai smiled back, gentle, steady. "You never were."

She leaned closer, shoulder brushing his arm.

And neither of them moved away.

Girls POV — Quiet Understanding

Mitsuri:

My heart was loud.

But it didn't feel scary.

I didn't need answers tonight—just closeness.

Snow could wait.

Kanae (watching from inside):

They didn't say it.

But they didn't need to.

Some things bloom better slowly.

Shinobu:

…Huh.

So that's what that feeling is.

Interesting.

---

The snow kept falling.

And inside the warmth, something unnamed stayed exactly where it was—

Not rushed.

Not denied.

Just waiting.
